Chapter Text
The ocean lay in an unfamiliar stillness, its vastness muted, as if holding its breath. Felix hovered above the coral ridge, his fingers brushing against glowing seagrass that shimmered faintly in his palm. The soft hum it emitted resonated with the rhythm of life, fragile yet persistent. The tranquility was deceiving—a quiet before an unseen storm.
Felix’s golden tail flicked, stirring faint currents as a shadow passed overhead. His chest tightened as the hum ceased. Above him, darkness loomed, and a sharp voice broke the silence.
“Lost your way, little mermaid?”
A voice like velvet laced with shards of glass sliced through the still water. Felix whipped around, his breath hitching. The siren hovered there, dark scales shimmering like obsidian, red eyes glowing with dangerous intensity. His lips curled into a smirk, revealing teeth sharp enough to shatter shells.
“Straying so far from home can be… fatal,” Hyunjin continued, circling Felix like a predator testing its prey. His sleek, crimson tail cut through the water with purpose, every movement precise and deliberate.
Felix swallowed hard, steadying himself.
“I’m not looking for trouble.”
“Pity.” Hyunjin’s smirk widened, his voice a silk thread dipped in malice. “Because I am.”
Felix’s thoughts raced as the siren closed the distance. Every instinct screamed at him to swim, but something in Hyunjin’s gaze rooted him in place—a sharpness tempered by something unspoken. When Hyunjin spoke again, his voice softened, though it remained edged with danger.
“You shouldn’t be here, Felix,” Hyunjin murmured. “The sea is no friend to dreamers.”
Felix’s hand clenched the glowing seagrass tighter, a reminder of his purpose. The ocean’s song shifted, faint and haunting. Words seemed to drift through the currents, fractured and ancient:
"Tides of fire and song... voices entwined... balance through sacrifice..."
His chest tightened as the melody faded. What did it mean? Shaking his head, Felix steadied himself.
“I didn’t come for trouble. I came to save what’s left of the reefs—before it’s too late.”
Hyunjin’s laughter was bitter, a sound that echoed like broken waves.
“Save the sea? That’s rich coming from a mermaid. You all think the ocean bends to your will.”
“And you think it’s your personal playground?” Felix shot back. He refused to look away from Hyunjin’s piercing stare. “The ocean isn’t yours, Hyunjin. It belongs to all of us.”
For a moment, the water stilled as Hyunjin’s expression shifted, something flickering in his crimson eyes—hesitation, or perhaps recognition.
Before either could say more, the water trembled, a deep, bone-chilling rumble rising from the ocean’s depths. Felix’s heart skipped as a dark current surged past, leaving an unnatural chill in its wake.
“It’s starting,” Felix murmured, his tail flicking nervously as if to shake off the cold.
Hyunjin’s crimson eyes narrowed, his body tensing.
“The sea doesn’t tremble for no reason. Whatever you think you’re saving, it might already be gone,” Hyunjin said, his voice sharp.
Before Felix could respond, the trembling currents carried a low, resonant hum. Hyunjin’s crimson eyes narrowed as a voice—deep and ancient—seemed to whisper through the water:
"When the sea’s cry reaches the heavens, and tides of fire and song collide..."
Felix’s heart raced.
“What was that?”
“A warning,” Hyunjin murmured, his tone unusually quiet. “The prophecy.”
Felix squared his shoulders, his voice steady despite the unease coiling in his chest.
“Even if it’s true, we still have time. And I’m not giving up.”
“It’s not gone yet. We still have time.”
Hyunjin’s jaw tightened, his claws flexing against the pull of his instinct to flee.
“Then you’d better hope your voice is as strong as the stories say, mermaid. The ocean’s cry doesn’t forgive mistakes.”
