Chapter Text
It’s all over.
A glowing, cherub of a baby girl cowers under her blanket, whimpering at every flash of lightning illuminating the inky sky and lips quivering the deafening, sonic boom that inevitably follows.
A rush of slightly coherent thoughts overwhelm Kokomi’s mind. Her infantile brain is futilely attempting to rationalize the situation in the short quiet time between each whip-crack of plasma that God strikes the planet with…
…why?
Why is this happening??
Is God punishing them?
Are these raindrops perhaps the tears of god?
Oh no, did Kokomi do something wrong? Was she not good enough?
She’ll be a good girl! A good girl that makes people smile! A good girl that can be loved. Pinky promise!
She doesn’t know if the window will last much longer against the aggressive vigour of the rain. She pinky-promises that she’ll be a good girl from now on.
Yes, now and forever, promise!
P… Pretty please…??
It was so loud. Everything was so loud.
Loud enough to drown out her wails for help, surely.
No one will hear her, no one will help her… they leave… always.
Kokomi is alone… …alone forever?
A deafening boom follows after a tree charred by the elements could no longer stand strong… it’s loud, Kokomi is gonna fall apart too, so loud…
so loud she didn’t hear the desperate slap slap slapping of tiny feet bounding all over the house in search of her, nor the rattling of the too-high-up doorknob followed by the eerie creak of the bedroom door.
The sobs she tried to swallow were too strong to hold back, but not as strong as the arms that are suddenly wrapped around her.
Her red face buries into the mystery source of comfort and leans into the mystery little hand that was gently patting her back.
She trusts whoever this is, she trusts the stubby digits combing through her hair and the vibrations of the squeaky voice. That is all she knows.
Soon Kokomi's heart slows down, feeling the mystery body that she may or may not recognize lean back a bit to wipe her tears away.
The soft voice tries to soothe her, and though she doesn’t understand many of the jumbled up words yet, it’s working nonetheless.
She shyly cranes her face upward, watery blue eyes registering her worried Big Brother Makoto. Kokomi is scared.. Is big brother scared too? Is big brother too strong to be scared?
Sure, Makoto was a baby himself, but he is still Kokomi’s big brother.
Alive for two years more than Kokomi, this very strong big boy is sure he knows a bit better about how to cope and he will help Kokomi.
He will protect her, he will always protect his cute little sister. He doesn’t want to see her cry ever again.
He slightly shaking, but,, but it’s totally not because of the thunderstorm! And… and… his stomach dropped because Kokomi was upset that’s all… that’s all…
His Blue brows furrow… all that matters is that big bro Makoto knows he will always be there to help and support his little sister… in whatever way he knows how.
Mom and Dad are busy… really busy… too busy for them…
It gets lonely.
No, no. He needs to be HAPPY for Kokomi’s sake, STRONG and HAPPY. He has to be perfect and good! A perfect Big Brother. Kokomi doesn’t deserve… that…
His eyes get dull and glassy for a few moments, then he shakes his head to snap out of it
um…
Makoto will protect her. Yes, Makoto will protect her, make her happy. No one is allowed to hurt her…
Kokomi is so innocent, so vulnerable!
He doesn’t want her to be hurt like he was, he wants to save her like no one had saved him.
No no no, Bad Makoto! Happy thoughts, happy thoughts!
Sad thoughts are not helping right now. Think about how CUTE Kokomi is. Yes, only focus on that. On the tears caught in her lashes, and the redness of her cheeks…
Hmm… For now, Makoto shows her a rain related rhyme or two that he learned in kindergarten so far.
The itsy bitsy spider is extra fun with the hand movements. He can tell Kokomi is trying her best to do the gestures, but maybe she doesn’t understand the twisting motion?
Her pointer fingers and thumbs are making the square but she doesn’t know how to proceed.
She thinks she’s doing it right, she is so silly! Little sister is so CUTE, too cute, little sister deserves to be loved. Nothing like him! He wants the genuine, wide smile to stay on her face. He is the child actor, not her… at least, not yet. Please no…
It’s a dangerous world outside. He knows. He’s… experienced first hand…
and rain rain go away was also pretty effectively comforting his darling little sister!!
And, and Makoto made funny voices while narrating the games they played with their toys!
From the dolls to the plushies and figurines… The surprisingly good voice acting and the brainpower of two imaginative children immersed the siblings into a world of play. A sight that would cause world peace if broadcast around the world. Crime rates would fall fast.
Extremely fast.
So fast that it would be scary…
The pitter patter of rainfall was like white noise, or a song playing in the background. It became a pleasant sort of sound. Perhaps god is slowly cheering up at this sight? Kokomi doesn’t quite get it, but she is happy.
Get your rain boots and raincoats on! The duo prepare to go jump in puddles. To splash and play with the aftermath of their terrible experiences. That’s all they can do. Kokomi found the positive side of what was meant to be scary, she can do that now and forever right?
She was able to laugh after the help big brother Makoto gave. The help big brother Makoto probably didn’t get, not that she’s aware. But it’s okay! He doesn’t matter!
Kokomi can be protected, he can fix this! He can protect her! He can’t be fixed, the things that have been done to him can’t be undone, he’s ruined goods, no one will love him now that he’s tainted and no longer perfect, so that’s all he can do!
He’ll focus and put his whole self into being the best big brother ever, he will do everything for Kokomi!!!
Then Kokomi won’t have to be sad like him! He’s all she needs!
Perhaps big brother Makoto always just wanted to help… god knows both of them need it…
