Chapter Text
How could she ?
How could she be so careless, carefree ? How could she let their gaze slide over her and her smooth skin ? How could she know and ignore what they thought of her ?
How dare she ?
No. Galinda could not accept it, she could not accept that someone could ever live without even trying to meet their expectations. They were all the fingers itching to point at her, they were all the snide remarks waiting to fill the silence when she couldn't hear them. They were everyone. Because if they laughed around the others' back, why wouldn't they do the same for Galinda ?
Contrary to popular belief, Galinda was not dumbsicle. She had always understood more than she would let on. And maybe that's what everyone did. Nobody was clueless, they acted like it because that's what life is. Or at least her life.
But she was different. She was not dumbsicle either so she would surely know they were mocking her, laughing at her, not even trying to prevent their fingers from pointing at her. She was the outcast. Not because she didn't know, but because she chose not to. So why was she stronger than Galinda ?

How could she ?
How could she be so careless, carefree ? How could she let people live in prejudice, fighting their way through life while she, in all her undeserved privilege, enjoyed the joy existence was supposed to give everyone ? How did she manage to change their mocking smirks into admirative gazes ?
How dare she ?
No. Elphaba could not accept it, she could not accept that someone could ever act as if their harsh words were not a big deal as long as they were not directed at her. They were all the fingers pointing at her, they were all the snide remarks filling the silence even when she could hear them. They were everyone. Because no one has ever shown her anything else than this.
Contrary to popular belief, Elphaba was not indifferent to the multiple mockery of which she was the target. She was crumbling under the weight of insults whispered, shouted, thought so forcefully that they created an invisible but tangible wall.
And she was not different.
