Chase, What's A Selfie?

Summary:

Chase surprises the keys with something he got from Prunella, only to be reminded yet again that the extent of their knowledge of the world doesn't span past the 1800s.

Notes:

I wanted to make this wayyy longer but I have been working on this for weeks with no progress because my brain is mushy LOL. But enjoy

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Oh my gosh, Silver. You would not believe what Prunella just gave me,” Chase said, climbing up into the room. “You are gonna love this.”

The little key poked her head out from her cardboard home, intrigued. “What is it, Chase?”

He hurriedly began to dig around for the supposed thing in his front jacket pocket, combing through the miscellaneous objects he somehow acquired today. “Gum wrapper, shiny rock, my bracelet charm that broke off this morning… Another gum wrapper. Huh, I could swear it was this pocket. Oh! A quarter.”

From below, Deacon barged into Chase’s room, marching up to the bottom of the attic stairs.

“Chase! Could you go through your junk a little quieter? I’m trying to study!”

“Dorkin, perfect timing! Get up here, we’re having a photoshoot.” Chase took a thoughtful pause, momentarily stopping his search for the mystery item. “And grab my shades and your aviators!”

Deacon sighed. “Seriously, I don’t have time for this.”

“Dude, if you have time to read Seas of Passion for the third time today, then you have time to spare. Now get up here with what I asked for, I woke Bronze up for this.” As if on cue, the helper key grumbled and roused in his chicken mitt.

A groan of annoyance sounded from downstairs, and Chase knew that he had won. He listened smugly as his cousin’s heavy footsteps stomped off to the other second floor bedroom, no doubt to grab his sunglasses.

Silver beamed with excitement. “Are you going to give Bronze and I a fashion show?”

“Hmmm… well, not exactly,” Chase answered. As his patience dwindled, he frustratedly flipped his second pocket inside out, dumping the contents out onto the floor. King Bar wrappers fluttered to the ground. There, among the rest of the trash freshly littering his grandfather’s old rug, was what he was looking for.

“Aha!” he exclaimed, grabbing the object. He ceremoniously presented it to her in the palm of his hand.

In it sat a miniature pair of sunglasses. Their pink, plastic, rubbery frames and lenses indicated that they were useless in filtering sunlight, and instead were intended for show: doll sunglasses.

“Oh my, how darling! Are these for me?”

“Yup! I've got some for Bronze, too,” Chase replied, turning to the other key, who had been watching silently from afar, uncertain yet interested.

Another set of sunglasses, all black, were passed onto Bronze. Chase delighted in the fact that the normally stoic key appeared genuinely thrilled to receive his gift.

“I’ll also put on my shades, you guys. We’re going to take matching selfies together!”

The little keys, now standing side-by-side, glanced at one another. “Alright, Chase! But, um… well, what exactly is a selfie?”

Awaiting their response, the keys felt the room go cold. You could hear a pin drop in the silence that ensued their genuine question. They began to wonder if they had said something wrong.

“Alright, I’ve got your glasses,” Deacon called, coming up the stairs. “Woah, what’s going on here?”

Chase had gone full-on Professor Mode, pacing back and forth in the center of the room, droning on about some sort of historical significance behind the "world’s best photo”. He rambled at the speed of light when he was really passionate about something, and this was no exception—Deacon had never seen his cousin so shaken up about someone’s lack of internet culture expertise.

“The selfie revolutionized internet culture as a whole! It changed the game!”

“I see, Chase! So it is a special kind of photography on its own?” Silver mused.

“Yes, exactly! Well, it should be.”

“Oh my gosh, don’t listen to a word he’s saying, you two,” Deacon scolded, rolling his eyes. “Let’s just take the selfies already.”

Notes:

I know you can't take pictures inside of a storybook, but I have no idea if you can take one of the keys. I hope so. I want to make a drawing of the selfie they took one day
