The universe's cruelest irony

Summary:

"You are so beautiful my friend,
so very beautiful."

Basically Victor's thoughts about Henry when he's sick and being taken care of. Very soft, very tender, full of love. Victor adores Henry with his whole being but doesn't really think he derserves Henry's care and affection.

Notes:

I wrote this for a creative writing course and liked it so here it is! While neither of their names are mentioned, this is Victor's thoughts about Henry. Hope you like it! :3

Work Text:

My dearest friend,
you became my salvation from myself,
from everything I fear.

You made me yours to care for,
like an angel you took me under your protection.
Ever watchful you sit by my side
and despite the horrors I cannot undo
it seems I’ve been given a miracle,
a guardian angel,
gentler and more divine than anything else.

You are so beautiful my friend,
so very beautiful.
Your soul is so tender and benevolent,
your smile so soft and sacred,
your voice smooth and soft-spoken as you gently speak to me.
You shine like the most brilliant star in the night sky,
clear and bright in a world full of darkness.
I follow you through my misfortune,
like a sailor who follows the northstar across the sea
I sail constantly towards your light.
But the stars are so very far away
and you,
my angel,
is so very close.

When the fever strikes you dab my forehead,
when my dreams are filled with terror you soothe me with soft whispers,
when I am weak you give me the strength to carry on.
I don’t deserve such kindness,
such care.

That I,
(such an unworthy person)
get to have you near me,
get to be warmed by your love,
get to feel your hand against my brow,
feels like a cruel joke,
a fleeting dream that will soon end.

That the person who least deserves it
and who can give nothing in return,
becomes the receiver of an angel’s care,
is the universe’s cruelest irony.
