“I could never be on stage on my own. But puppets can say things that humans can't say.”

Summary:

We learn more about dahlia.
All songs are from my playlist for her which I will share at the end of the story.
The chapters are short stories about Dahlia.
I’m a new writer.
Updates will be infrequent

Notes:

Title is from The City’s Yours from Annie (2014)
TW for this chapter: Blood, Falling out windows, Circuses, Puppets, Self Hatred, and possibly more? LMK if I missed anything!
First ever actual fanfic that I’ve posted.
I’m trying my best, alright?
It’s not actual technically a Fanfic, ig. It’s a me-fic. A Creator fic? A fic? I don’t know.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: “You gotta get wet when it’s rainin’.”

Chapter Text

“Hey. It’s okay, you’re okay.” Jakey whispered, folding Dahlia in his wings. Just as he always had. Dahlia felt horrible. She was getting blood all over his nice clothes. Not because she was bleeding, of course. No. Bleeding was for real people. Not for monsters, monsters like her.

She was a monster, no matter how many times people told her otherwise. She had to be a monster, otherwise things didn’t make sense.

Flashback

She had been created at some point, maybe 300 years ago, but she couldn’t count that high.

Dahlia started her life, if you could call it that, as a puppet in the circus, one of many, not very special. She would sing and dance on her own, making her very popular, though she had no soul.

One day, a powerful wizard had come to the circus with his daughter. The daughter saw Dahlia and was immediately enchanted by her. She had curly dark brown hair, pale skin, rosy cheeks, and beautiful blue eyes. The daughter begged her father for the puppet. The Wizard, after much negotiation, was able to purchase Dahlia and gave her to his daughter.

The daughter played with Dahlia and treated her as her best friend, as the young girl had no real friends. The wizard put a “black box” inside Dahlia, making her more lifelike and able to have a personality, but it was only an artificial soul.

A demon, banished from hell, came along, needing a host. It chose Dahlia. The wizard’s daughter screamed in terror as Dahlia came more to life, her eyes began streaming blood.
She was horrified and in a panic she threw Dahlia out of the tower window.

Dahlia fell and fell and fell. And then…

CRACK

She cried more, as now, she could feel the pain of being broken. Her leg was gone, shattered. Her face had cracked, she was no longer beautiful.

Years later, she met Jakey. Jakey was nice. He didn’t yell or scream at her, he wasn’t afraid of her. He was kind. Dahlia liked Jakey.

Jakey came to realize that Dahlia had the mind of a child, and despite having a demon living inside of her, she had her own mind and heart and soul.

Jakey was an Angel. Literally and figuratively. He introduced Dahlia to his family, a word Dahlia hadn’t known until now.

Jakey’s family soon became Dahlia’s family too. They taught her things.

Salem taught Dahlia about magic, Ciaren taught Dahlia about the Nether, Celtic and Jakey taught Dahlia how to fight…

They were good family. Dahlia…

What was that word Jakey always used?

Love. Yes.

Dahlia loved her family.

But soon, her family began to crumble.

A mean man, who was apparently Celtic’s real brother, because Ciaren would never do this, showed up. Bailey revealed that she was never really their friend. And it all began to fall apart.
