Pay the Toll

Summary:

It's Elsa's turn to drive on the way home from the vacation rental, and Olaf is the only other one awake.

Work Text:

It was late at night, and it was Elsa’s turn to drive the van.  Each of them had taken a turn driving home from the vacation rental, and now Kristoff and Anna were fast asleep in the back seat, and Elsa was sitting up front with Olaf.

“Hey, Elsa?” Olaf asked.

“Yes, Olaf?”

“Is this a toll road?”

Elsa looked ahead, and there was, in fact, a toll plaza coming up.

“I guess it is,” Elsa said. “I wasn’t paying attention earlier.  Which lane should I pick?”

“Do we need to pay cash?” Olaf asked.

Elsa glanced at the windshield, by the mirror where a transponder would normally be, and realized that Kristoff’s van didn’t have one.

“It looks like we do,” Elsa said.  “How much do we need?”

“The second lane from the right,” Olaf said.

“Olaf, that’s not an answer to my question,” Elsa sighed, trying to slow down without annoying the cars behind them.  Most of them were rushing over to the transponder lanes.

“Sorry, I mean, the lane on the right is exact change only, but I only have a twenty.  The second lane from the right is the one we need.”

“Oh, I see.  Thank you.”

They pulled over, and Olaf handed Elsa the twenty, and she handed it over to the toll booth operator. After briefly rolling his eyes, he gathered up change, and Elsa sighed in relief when she handed the change back to Olaf without dropping any on the road.  They continued on their way.

“Is everyone still asleep back there?” Elsa whispered.

“Oh yeah!” Olaf said, glancing back. Both of them were snoring.

“You want to take over driving in another hour?” Elsa asked.

“Sure thing! I’ve never driven something like this, it’ll be fun!”
