Shiho laid the thermos full of tea onto the wooden park bench. She swallowed and stared at the tea as she spoke.
“Usually I don’t bring this much, but uh…”
Shiho glanced quickly at Mizuki’s smiling face.
“My sister gave me enough for both of us.”
Mizuki just smiled wider and watched Shiho as she poured the tea into two small travel cups.
“Thank you. Shii-chan!” she sang, which only made Shiho’s face get red. She was about to say “Don’t call me Shii-chan” just on instinct, but she couldn’t bring herself to tell that to Mizuki. Watching her take a sip, Shiho drank from her own cup.
The tea warmed her body, especially noticeable because of a stark contrast between her temperature and the temperature of the autumn air around her. She was unusually warm today, so on the walk over she’d taken off her hoodie to give to Mizuki. Watching Mizuki now, she noticed her own simple, dark hoodie looked out of place among the light frills and ribbons of Mizuki’s usual attire. She almost never took her hoodie off; it was like a piece of her body. Seeing it so casually joining Mizuki’s outfit was…
“What’chya lookin’ at?”
Mizuki grinned. Her smile reached her eyes and crinkled her pink eyeshadow. Her cheeks and nose were red from the cold and her lips were wet with tea. Shiho’s cheeks were red from the way Mizuki was looking at her.
“Nothin’...” She mumbled, “Just wondering if you were warm enough, that’s all…”. Mizuki laughed.
“I’m doing just fine! How are you, without your sweater?”
“All good… warm…” Shiho looked down at her cup and took an awkward sip of tea. Mizuki just laughed again and took a sip herself.
