Whumptober Day 16: Substitution, Feeding Tube

Notes:

Disclaimer, I am not a doctor. I did very surface level research. I do have a minor eating disorder but by no means do I feel like I have enough knowledge to claim this makes perfect sense. Just remember folks, this is fanfiction.

Enjoy! <3

Work Text:

Viktor was pacing again. He knew that because Yuuri was pulling him into the chair next to him. He loved his Yuuri. His sweet little pork cutlet bowl. Yet his love for his fiancé did nothing to quell the anxiety in his stomach. Yuuri was just as worried, muttering and knee bouncing. Viktor held his hand tightly.

They had gotten the call early in the morning that Yurio had collapsed at practice. Both of them had been up and ready in minutes. Yuuri's socks were mismatched and Viktor's shirt had been on backwards but they had been out the door and on their way to the hospital in record time. Yakov hadn't said much because he hadn't known much, but Viktor and Yuuri were Yura's legal guardians after his grandfather passed a while back so they needed to be there. The decision had been unanimous on their end and Yurio had been pretty annoyed given he had been a month away from his eighteenth birthday.

In the end, Yuri had accepted it and had even willingly moved in. They were happy to be Yurio's guardians and were happy to be there for the young adult.

They were still happy, it was just… well Viktor was nervous cause no one had told them anything yet. They'd been sitting in the sterile hospital for Yakov knows how long at this point and their patience was wearing thin. Finally fed up, Viktor went to the nurse's station.

“Excuse me, but can you tell us anything about Yuri Plisetsky? We've been here for hours.” He asked and did his best to give the nurse a smile.

The nurse didn't even bother to look up from her computer which had Viktor frowning, “Sorry only family.”

Viktor's frown deepened, “Yes. We know. We are Yura's legal guardians.”

The nurse looked up at Viktor and then eyed his fiancé. She rolled her eyes and sighed.

“Sure whatever. Room C118. Down the hall and take a right.”

Viktor gave the woman a glare for her rude behavior but she had already returned to her computer. Yuuri gave him a reassuring smile and took his arm, guiding him towards their Yurio. Viktor's anxiety spiked as they neared the room, though he kept a brave face for his fiancé. Yuuri was frowning, fidgeting, and nervous. Viktor smiled at his love and ran his hand over Yuuri's back in an effort to soothe his fiancé's fears.

They neared Yura's room and as they went to enter a doctor stepped out.

The doctor spotted them and smiled softly, “Oh are you Yuri's guardians? He said you'd probably be coming.”

Yuuri nodded, “Yes, we came as soon as we heard. Is Yurio okay? What's the matter with him? His coach said he passed out during practice, did he hit his head?”

Viktor placed a calming hand on his fiancé in an attempt to get Yuuri to relax.

The doctor allowed a professional attitude to take over, the cheery demeanor gone.

“Well to start, Yuri is okay now. We have him on fluids currently.” The doctor stated.

Both of them sighed in relief. That was good news.

The doctor continued, “As for his fainting spell… were either of you aware that Yuri is severely malnourished?”

Viktor gripped his fiancé's hand as his anxiety returned with a brutal force. He'd had no idea. Yuuri didn't seem to know either. He shook his head.

“I see. Well the reason for Yuri's loss of consciousness was due to his malnourishment. We've had a specialist come in and talk to Yuri and we don't necessarily want to call this something like anorexia, however he isn't eating what he needs to and his body is suffering from it. Right now he is going to have a feeding tube, temporarily, until he gets back on his feet.” the doctor finished.

Yuuri leaned on Viktor and he found that he wanted to lean on something too.

“How long will he need to have the tube?” Viktor asked softly knowing that Yuri was likely unhappy about it.

The doctor gave him a straight answer, “A few weeks. Would you like to talk to him?”

Yuuri nodded but Viktor stayed back to get more in depth information from the doctor. This would be a big change for Yura. A temporary one but still big. According to the doctor they would need to make sure to keep the feeding tube clean, make sure it's kept secure, and they would need to know how to administer medication and nutrients through the tube. It was going to be through Yura's nose and Viktor knew that it was going to infuriate the young adult. This way Yuri could get the necessary calorie and nutrient intake.

When Viktor walked in, Yuuri was crying.

He looked to Yuri who was sitting up in his hospital bed looking pissed, “Yurio, why is my fiancé crying?”

Yura refused to look him in the eye which wasn't a great sign.

Instead Yuuri answered through his tears, “Viktor, he said he didn't want to get better!”

Viktor frowned, “Yura why? Why do this to yourself?”

Yuri looked at Viktor with a blaze in his eyes, “I can't get fat like the piggy over there. I need to be able to skate better and I will if I'm lighter.”

His heart broke hearing Yuri's sad words and seeing the younger's too thin frame. Viktor ached to hug Yura and tell him he was wrong, that he was perfectly enough as it was and Yuri was better off healthy than half dead. Yet all Viktor could do was tear up.

“Yura,” Viktor started, “You don't need to starve yourself for skating. You're already talented enough to do whatever you want. Please don't sacrifice your health for that. We don't want to see you hurt Yurio, your grandfather wouldn't have wanted it either.”

Yuri sobered a bit and his anger faded some, “I never meant to go this far…”

Viktor proceeded to wrap Yuri in a hug at the admission with Yuuri joining them.

“We're here for you and you will get better, Yura.” Viktor promised.

Notes:

Personally I don't think Yuri's goal was to hurt himself, he just reminds me of myself in that he'll work hard to obtain his goals and unintentionally, and unknowingly, hurt himself in the process. I think he didn't know how far he'd gone.

Anyways have a good noon/day/night o/
