with you to the end of the line

Summary:

“You've gotten better at it,” he says, “At confessing.”

“How so?”

“You used to be more anxious.”

Now it's just Lu Guang whose heart starts racing when he hears Cheng Xiaoshi talk about spending the rest of his life with someone.

Work Text:

Lu Guang doesn't move when Cheng Xiaoshi pops up next to him on the couch.

Neither of them says anything at first, Cheng Xiaoshi undoubtedly needing a moment to orient himself again after coming back from a dive, Lu Guang because he always feels a bit lightheaded after hearing Cheng Xiaoshi confess to someone.

Even if they are not Cheng Xiaoshi’s own words. Even if they aren't directed at Lu Guang.

“You've gotten better at it,” he says, “At confessing.”

“How so?”

“You used to be more anxious.”

Now it's just Lu Guang whose heart starts racing when he hears Cheng Xiaoshi talk about spending the rest of his life with someone.

Cheng Xiaoshi shifts next to him, crosses his arms behind his head and looks up at the ceiling.

“It's easy when I'm imagining it's you,” he says.

Pause.

Rewind.

"What?”

Cheng Xiaoshi looks at him and Lu Guang stares right back at his face, eyes wide in disbelief.

“Are you actually surprised,” Cheng Xiaoshi asks and Lu Guang thinks for a moment.

Is he surprised? After everything they've been through together? Everything they've done for each other?

“No,” he says after a while, “No, I'm not. Just didn't expect you to say anything, I guess.”

Cheng Xiaoshi hums in response.

“You didn't say anything either,” he says and Lu Guang nods.

“I didn't.”

How do you tell someone you'd bend the rules for them? That you'd change entire timelines and defy death for them?

How could he possibly put his feelings for Cheng Xiaoshi into words without letting him know that that's exactly what he did.

“I'm telling you now,” he says and leans forward to press his lips against Cheng Xiaoshi's in a soft kiss that he hopes conveys exactly what he's feeling.

He thinks it does.
