The ocean swayed gently beneath the Thousand Sunny, while moonlight bathed the deck in its silver glow. Most of the crew had retired to their quarters, letting the nighttime tranquility envelop the ship. In the crow's nest, two figures shared an intimate moment, away from the daily bustle that characterized their usual interactions.
The smoke from Sanji's cigarette rose in lazy spirals upward, while he elegantly held a glass of red wine, the crimson liquid gleaming under the dim lighting. Zoro, for his part, savored his preferred sake, sitting in a relaxed posture.
It was in these moments when the masks fell. There was no need to maintain the appearances they showed during the day, nor to fuel their famous disputes that entertained the rest of the crew. In the intimacy of night, they could simply be themselves, without pretenses or expectations.
Sanji was sharing stories from the Baratie, his face illuminated by the joy of memories. His eyes sparkled as he described the cooks' antics, Zeff's lessons, and what he had experienced before joining the Strawhats. His voice, normally projected forcefully during their daily arguments, was now soft and melodious, almost musical.
"And then Patty tried to convince everyone he had invented a new recipe, can you believe it? The idiot had just burned the soup and pretended it was a 'revolutionary new culinary style'," Sanji laughed, the sound of his laughter resonating like music in Zoro's ears. "You should have seen the old man's face when he tasted that disaster. I don't think I'd ever seen him so horrified since I tried making my first soup."
Sanji's laughter filled the space between them, clear and sincere, making Zoro's heart imperceptibly quicken. The swordsman couldn't help but be captivated. The moonlight played with Sanji's golden locks, creating a halo around his face that made him appear almost unreal. The way his lips curved when he smiled, how his eyes slightly crinkled at the corners when he laughed, the way his hands gestured animatedly while telling his stories... everything about him was fascinating.
"You're beautiful," the words escaped Zoro's lips before he could contain them, his voice laden with a raw honesty that was so characteristic of him. "I love you." He wasn't a man of many words, preferring to demonstrate his feelings through actions, but there were moments when the truth was so overwhelming it needed to be expressed.
The effect was immediate. Sanji stopped mid-story, his cheeks turning an intense reddish color that spread to his ears. His eyes widened with surprise, fixed on Zoro with a mixture of disbelief and contained emotion.
"What... what are you saying, you idiot marimo?" muttered Sanji, his voice barely a whisper, while trying to maintain composure despite the evident blush on his face.
Zoro continued observing him, a small smile forming on his lips. It was fascinating how this man, who could face the most terrible enemies without blinking, who could keep calm in the most dangerous situations, would crumble with simple words of affection.
"I'm saying you're beautiful," repeated Zoro more firmly this time, "and that I would return from hell itself a thousand times over for you."
The blush on Sanji's face intensified even more, if that was possible. His fingers tensed around the wine glass, and for a moment it seemed he might stand up and flee. Instead, he muttered a series of broken curses, each more colorful than the last.
"Damn marimo... how can you say such things so calmly?" grumbled Sanji, but before Zoro could respond, the cook leaned forward, eliminating the distance between them.
The kiss was soft at first, almost shy, so different from their usual passionate encounters. Sanji's lips tasted of wine, cigarettes, and the spices he had used for dinner, a combination that Zoro had come to decide was his favorite. One of Sanji's hands slid to Zoro's nape, his fingers tangling in the short green hair.
When they finally separated, they remained close, their foreheads almost touching. Sanji's breathing was slightly irregular, and his eyes, normally clear as the sky, seemed darker, deeper.
"I love you too, idiot," Sanji murmured against Zoro's lips, before kissing him again.
It was fascinating how their dynamics changed in these nocturnal moments. During the day, they were rivals, crewmates who could barely be in the same room without starting a fight. But at night, when the world slept and only they remained, they could be vulnerable, could show that side of their relationship they kept hidden from the rest.
Zoro slid a hand down Sanji's back, drawing him closer. The cook let himself be guided, settling against the swordsman's chest with a familiarity born of countless nights like this. The silence that enveloped them was comfortable.
The stars shone above them, silent witnesses to this moment of peace. The ocean continued its eternal sway, gently rocking the ship. In the distance, clouds moved lazily, occasionally hiding the moon only to reveal it again, as if playing with its light.
"Remember the first time we stayed like this?" asked Sanji after a long moment of silence, his voice soft and thoughtful.
Zoro grunted affirmatively, his fingers tracing abstract patterns on the cook's back. "It was after Thriller Bark," he responded, his voice graver than normal when remembering those moments.
Sanji tensed slightly at the mention of that place. They both knew how close they had been to losing everything there. "You never told me exactly what happened that day," Sanji murmured, though his tone suggested he already knew the answer.
"It wasn't necessary," Zoro responded simply. "You're here. We're here. That's what matters."
Sanji raised his head to look at him, his eyes studying the swordsman's face intensely. "You're a reckless idiot," he declared, but there was affection in his words.
"And you're a sappy romantic," Zoro countered with a smile.
"Look who's talking, Mr. 'I'd return from hell for you'," Sanji imitated Zoro's voice, earning himself a light push that made him laugh.
The night progressed, and with it, their conversations flowed naturally between deep and trivial topics. They talked about their dreams, their fears, the little things they noticed about each other during the day but never mentioned. Nostalgically, they shared memories of their first encounters, laughed about their most ridiculous fights, and occasionally sank into comfortable silence, simply enjoying each other's presence.
The sake and wine eventually ran out, but neither made any move to leave. The moon's position indicated dawn was approaching, but time seemed different, as if moving more slowly, allowing them to savor every instant.
"We should get some sleep," Sanji finally suggested, though he made no attempt to move from his position against Zoro's chest.
"Mmm," was the swordsman's only response, his fingers continuing their soft caress on the cook's back.
"I'm serious, marimo. I have to prepare breakfast in a few hours."
"No one's stopping you from sleeping," Zoro murmured, slightly tightening his embrace.
Sanji sighed, but it was a sound of contentment rather than frustration. "If I fall asleep here, my whole body will ache tomorrow."
"I'll give you a massage," Zoro promised, earning a soft laugh from Sanji.
"Since when are you so accommodating?" asked the cook, raising his head to look at Zoro with an arched eyebrow.
"Since I discovered it's the best way to make you quiet," Zoro responded with a mocking smile.
Sanji gave him a playful punch to the chest. "Idiot," he murmured, but there was a smile on his lips when he settled back against Zoro.
Silence enveloped them again, but it was full of unspoken words, of deep feelings that didn't need to be expressed aloud. The soft sound of waves against the ship's hull was relaxing, and gradually, Sanji's breathing became deeper and more regular, but he refused to sleep. These moments were too precious to waste on something as mundane as sleep, the cook had said.
"Sanji," Zoro murmured after a long silence, knowing the cook hadn't yet fallen asleep.
"Mm?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For this. For all the nights. For being you."
Sanji raised his head to look at Zoro, surprised by the sincerity in his voice. "You're unusually sentimental tonight, marimo."
"Maybe," Zoro admitted, holding Sanji's gaze. "But it's the truth."
Sanji leaned in to softly kiss Zoro once more. "Thank you too," he whispered against his lips. "For loving me even when I'm unbearable."
"Especially when you're unbearable," Zoro corrected with a smile.
After a while, Sanji inevitably fell asleep. Zoro remained awake a bit longer, observing the cook's sleeping face. In moments like this, when all barriers fell and he could see Sanji in his most vulnerable state, he felt his heart could burst with love. It was a feeling he had never expected to experience, but now couldn't imagine living without.
Finally, sleep began to claim him too. With a last kiss to Sanji's forehead, Zoro closed his eye, allowing the warmth of the cook's body and the gentle rocking of the ship to lull him to sleep.
Dawn would find them like this, intertwined in the crow's nest, with small smiles on their faces and their hearts beating to the same rhythm. And although the day would bring back their usual fights and rivalries, they both knew that when night returned, they would have this again, these precious instances where they could simply be themselves, loving each other in the quietness of night.
And as the stars shone overhead, they both knew there was nowhere else they'd rather be than there, together, in their little corner of the world, sharing the love they had built step by step, night after night.
