Work Text:

Aziraphale remains seated next to Crowley’s bed, with him all bandaged up, fighting to survive. The war of Earth against Heaven and Hell had finally ended, but at a great cost. Crowley was brutally wounded in the final attack by the divine troops. Brave as ever, he endured his injuries to, together with Aziraphale, cast one last miracle to finally expel all demons and angels from Earth, cutting off any connection between these two groups and Earth.

Aziraphale holds Crowley’s hand affectionately when he begins to moan because of his fever. Aziraphale was being completely stupid, he knows that now. He accepted Metratron’s proposal, out of a mixture of ingenuity, greed and selfishness, thinking that someone would actually pay attention to what he said, that someone in Heaven would agree to save Earth. Through all of this, he deeply hurt Crowley, who tried to protect him in every possible way. After Aziraphale understood that Heaven will never change, he joined Crowley, who, together with Gabriel, Beelzebub and Muriel, formed a small resistance to protect Earth. He wanted to beg Crowley for forgiveness, to tell him that he loved him, but he couldn't do it. Crowley had asked him to leave any personal matters for after the battle was over. Aziraphale wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to talk to him again, now that he understands how absurd it was to want him to return to Heaven, to people who hurt him for simply asking questions.

With Aziraphale's other hand placed on Crowley's head, Aziraphale performs a miracle that will ease Crowley's injuries, at least enough to make his moans of pain cease. "You are very strong and proud, Crowley. I know you won't let Heaven win," Aziraphale says, "Please recover. You can't di…leave me," his voice almost breaking.

If it wasn't for Gabriel's help, Aziraphale wouldn't have been able to save Crowley. Unfortunately, he was only able to perform a miracle that saved Crowley momentarily, now all that's left is waiting to see if he can resist his wounds.

All Aziraphale can do is pray. Not to God, obviously, but to Crowley. Demons can hear people's prayers just like angels can. He can try to reach Crowley.

Aziraphale closes his eyes and clasps his hands together, imagining a bridge between the two of them. "Crowley, I hope my thoughts reach you. I owe you every apology, I know that nothing can erase how much I hurted you. I'm sorry, Crowley, I should never have abandoned you, I was an idiot to believe that Metatron was good, I was an idiot to think that there is only good and evil, angels and demons. Metatron would never accept being ordered around by someone or want the status quo to be changed. Now I know, I was arrogant for thinking that I could change Heaven’s doctrine, and not only that, there was also a desire for power. In my arrogance and pride, I believed that it was the best choice for both of us to live in Heaven, I just didn't realize how much it hurt you. I was foolish not to realize that asking you to come back to Heaven with me would be one of the greatest betrayals I could commit…” Aziraphale pauses his prayer, tears streaming down his face. He takes a deep breath and exhales to calm himself. He needs to get through to Crowley. “Now I know what I did to you, how I hurt you. Crowley, I never wanted you to stop being you, you are already perfect the way you are. Your curiosity and inventiveness always made you special, Heaven was foolish not to understand that. I'm sorry for the doctrine making me believe there was a right side, that for being a demon you should seek for redemption. Now I know that doesn’t exist, that your demon self is everything that ever made you special. Everything that made me fall in love with you. I love you Crowley, for your love I renounce God.”

As he finishes his prayers, Aziraphale feels something landing on his hand. He opens his eyes, and sees it’s Crowley’s hand, his snake eyes looking at him. “Crowley,” Aziraphale could only say that as tears fell.

“Long time no see you, angel,” Crowley says, standing up carefully. The hand that was under Aziraphale's hand goes to his angel’s face and wipes his tears. “I heard your prayers, angel. I accept your apology.” They both hug each other and Crowley starts to cry too, burying his face in Aziraphale's shoulder. “I LOVE YOU, ANGEL. I LOVE YOU,” Crowley says in a muffled, sobbing voice.

Aziraphale pulls away to hold Crowley’s face, wiping away his tears that are streaming down his face. “My dear,” says Aziraphale before placing his lips on Crowley’s lips, who kisses him back immediately. Aziraphale knows they still need to talk properly, but the important thing is that they are safe now and they are together. And that is all that matters.
