Work Text:

“Sweetheart, haven’t you realised? You’re pregnant.” Elliott breaks the silence of the slow, early morning. Juliet stops scratching at the callus on her palm, looking up at her husband slowly, blinking.

“…What?” Juliet speaks after a moment of silence, just staring at him. He looks much more awake than she does, dressed with his hair brushed through.

“You’re pregnant.” Elliott repeats. His eyes are soft as he sits across from her at the kitchen table. His pianist fingers are wrapped around a steaming mug of coffee.

Juliet bites back a second ‘what’ and rubs at her eyes, her body craving the warmth of their bed. “And how do you know that?” She raises an eyebrow. “Before I do?”

“You can be a tad single minded, dear. You often forget things.” Elliott smiles besottedly, lessening the bite of listing her character flaws. “I suppose you haven’t noticed that you haven’t had a period in two months.”

Juliet pauses in her attempt to steal his coffee and sits back in her chair as she thinks. She’d been more focused on planting crops at the start of the season and then doting on newborn lambs. “Huh.” She says after a long pause. “I didn’t even realise.”

“I gathered.” Elliott said a little dryly. “There were other signs, of course-“

“I didn’t know you were such an expert in female anatomy.” Juliet tilts her head, a smirk playing on her lips. She can’t resist teasing him, it’s like a reflex.

“Didn’t you?” Elliott’s eyes go heavy lidded over the rim of his mug, voice dipping down a register.

Juliet suppresses a choked noise, mind flashing back to a few nights ago, where Elliott demonstrated his familiarity with the female anatomy, using his tongue. “Nevermind.” She says a little hastily, cheeks warm.

Elliott bites back a grin, something smug in the set of his shoulders. He softens again, all at once. He reaches across the table to hold her hand.

“A baby.” He says tenderly, lovingly. His thumb strokes the back of her hand. His joy is clear in his smile.

“A baby.” Juliet parrots, trying to comprehend the news that had been dumped on her so abruptly. She recalls just yesterday when she’d been fighting a horde of slimes with her pockets stuffed full of cheese. She’d told Elliott she was going foraging. “Well, fuck.”
