Chapter Text
Obito Uchiha stood in silence, his gaze fixed on the gravestone before him. It was the same spot where Kakashi had been laid to rest so many years ago, after the fateful mission at Kannabi Bridge. The wind whispered through the trees around the Konoha cemetery, carrying with it the scent of earth and age. Yet, it felt like nothing had changed. For Obito, time had frozen the moment he witnessed his friend's final breath. The grave, the memories, and the pain—they were all that remained.
His fingers twitched as he touched the polished stone. Kakashi Hatake, it read, forever engraved in cold, unfeeling granite. Obito couldn’t help but wonder if his former comrade would have had a different life, had things gone another way. He had failed him. He had failed everyone.
His thoughts drifted back to the last moments he had with Kakashi—those final words, those final actions. The sword. Kakashi had given him his sword. A symbol of trust, of hope. A piece of Kakashi’s strength that he carried with him, always.
Obito exhaled slowly, the weight of his regret pressing down on him like a thousand boulders. Every day he came here, hoping that somehow, something would change. That his heart would heal. But it never did.
A sudden crack broke through his reverie, a violent sound like thunder breaking the stillness of the night. Obito’s eyes shot wide open, his Sharingan flaring instinctively.
What was that?
Before he could react, the ground beneath his feet began to tremble violently. The world around him began to fracture—reality itself seemed to warp and stretch as cracks in the air opened like jagged wounds in the fabric of time. Obito stumbled backward, his hand instinctively gripping the hilt of Kakashi’s sword, the last thing his friend had left him. His heart raced as the air around him buzzed with unnatural energy.
A powerful force suddenly gripped him, and before he could even comprehend what was happening, the world collapsed around him.
The next thing Obito knew, the ground was gone beneath him, and he was falling—falling through endless space. His body whipped through the air, wind rushing past his ears in a deafening roar. For a split second, his mind screamed for control, but there was nothing he could do. The world was a blur, spinning around him as his heart hammered in his chest.
“Where am I?” The answer came far too late.
With a sharp jolt, Obito hit the ground, the impact knocking the air from his lungs. He gasped, rolling to a stop, his body aching from the fall. He lay still for a moment, catching his breath, disoriented by the strange shift in reality.
His vision blurred, and for a moment, he wondered if the fall had taken a worse toll than he realized. But as the world slowly came back into focus, Obito found himself lying just outside the village of Konoha.
He sat up slowly, his head spinning, and his hands pressed into the dirt.
“Where… am I?” he muttered under his breath, staring at the trees just beyond the village gates. This wasn’t the Konoha he remembered—the landscape felt both familiar and alien, twisted by some strange force.
Suddenly, a sharp clang echoed in the silence.
Obito’s instincts kicked in before his mind could catch up. He whipped around, eyes darting to the source of the sound.
A figure stood before him, silhouetted by the dimming light of the late afternoon. The figure was covered in blood, his clothes dark with the red stains of battle. The faint, tattered edges of a cloak billowed in the wind, but it was the sword he held that caught Obito’s attention.
The Anbu mask—smooth, expressionless—hid the figure’s face, but the blade at the man’s side gleamed under the fading sunlight.
Before Obito could move, the sword was pressed to his throat, cold steel against his skin. The air was thick with tension, and the feeling of being pinned, helpless, made his stomach tighten.
Is this… Konoha’s Anbu?
Obito’s eyes flickered upward, meeting the glowing red of the Sharingan in the figure’s mask.
He froze.
No… it couldn’t be.
"Who are you?" The voice that came from behind the mask was calm, cold, with a sharp edge to it. But beneath the harshness, there was something familiar—something that made Obito’s heart skip a beat.
His breath hitched. His gaze locked with the Sharingan that mirrored his own. The swirling crimson eyes—the eyes of the one person he never expected to see again.
"Kakashi?" Obito whispered, barely able to form the words.
The Anbu figure didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. The sword remained steady at Obito’s throat.
"Impossible," Kakashi’s voice echoed, low and firm, his words cutting through the tension like a blade. "Obito died a long time ago."
Obito’s heart twisted painfully in his chest. What is this? What is going on?
The world had changed. Kakashi was alive, standing before him, but Obito was not the man he once knew. Not in this place. Not in this world.
The silence between them was deafening.
But the questions burned in Obito’s mind, sharper than the blade at his throat. Why was Kakashi here? Why did he look like this? And most importantly—how was he alive?
He swallowed hard, trying to steady his breath as his mind raced.
"Why are you pointing that sword at me?" Obito asked, his voice laced with both confusion and the weight of the years lost between them.
But Kakashi didn’t answer. His stance didn’t waver. The sword remained at Obito’s throat, the cold tip still pressed against his skin.
And all Obito could do was stare, paralyzed by the impossible situation before him.
The person who had died long ago now stood in front of him. And yet, it felt as if everything had shifted in the blink of an eye.
The rift, the fall, and the strange new reality—they were just the beginning.
Kakashi Hatake stood at the edge of the forest, his Anbu mask hiding the depth of his emotions as the shadows stretched long into the twilight. His cloak fluttered behind him, stained with the remnants of the mission he had just completed—a silent, swift execution. The target had been an enemy spy, no different than the countless others he had dealt with in the years since joining the Anbu. But this mission… this one had been different.
He never knew what to expect when he accepted missions like this. Killing was second nature now, part of who he had become. Yet, in the back of his mind, something had always gnawed at him—the hollow feeling in his chest, the one that remained after each mission. The same feeling he had carried with him ever since that day, the day he watched Obito die.
The wind rustled through the trees, but Kakashi barely noticed. His mind was elsewhere, in a place that had haunted him for years. The memory of Obito’s death, the desperate fight, and the broken promise that followed.
"Obito..." Kakashi muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as his fingers unconsciously brushed the hilt of the sword at his side. It was still with him—the sharingan Obito had given him, the one that symbolized their bond, the one that represented the man he couldn’t save.
His grip tightened as he walked, moving toward the village gates. The quiet of the evening was abruptly shattered by a strange sensation in the air. Kakashi’s senses flared instantly. Something was wrong. The wind shifted again, but it wasn’t the wind—it was something far stranger.
A crack. A fracture in the air itself.
Kakashi froze, his instincts immediately on high alert. The air shimmered, distorting as if reality itself was bending, stretching. His heart skipped a beat. What is that?
He had seen many things in his life—battles, bloodshed, death—but this was something entirely different. It felt as though the fabric of the world was being torn apart. His mind raced, trying to make sense of what he was witnessing.
Then, from the tear in the air, a figure fell.
Kakashi’s breath caught in his throat. He didn’t know how he knew, but he knew. His eyes locked onto the falling figure—one that seemed to have no place in this world. The figure spun through the air, helpless, before crashing violently into the earth below.
Without hesitation, Kakashi sprinted forward, his heart pounding in his chest. A person? But... how?
He reached the site in seconds, dropping to his knees beside the stranger. His eyes scanned the figure lying there, disoriented but alive. His hand moved to the hilt of his sword, ready to strike in case this was some trick.
But then, the figure’s face was revealed as the man slowly pushed himself up.
And that’s when Kakashi’s world stopped.
The man was… Obito.
Kakashi’s eyes widened, his mind struggling to comprehend the impossible sight in front of him. Obito—alive?
Obito’s eyes flickered open, confusion clouding his expression as he looked around. Kakashi’s heart tightened in his chest. There was no mistaking it—the same eyes, the same face, the same voice.
Obito.
But the Obito standing before him wasn’t the one Kakashi had known. This wasn’t the man he had fought beside. This wasn’t the man who had become his enemy.
It couldn’t be.
“Who are you?” Kakashi demanded, his voice flat and cold, his instincts on full alert. The sword remained in his grip, though his hand was trembling. It wasn’t fear—no, it was something far deeper.
Obito’s gaze flickered to the sword Kakashi held, his own hand reaching out instinctively for the sword that had once been his. His expression was one of disbelief, confusion. “Kakashi?” he whispered, the name carrying the weight of a thousand unspoken words.
The name—Kakashi.
But the truth was just as heavy.
Kakashi’s heart skipped, but his mind was already on the defense. His Sharingan flared in response, analyzing Obito’s presence with the sharpness only his eyes could provide. This man, this Obito—was not the same. He couldn’t be.
“No,” Kakashi’s voice was steady, though every fiber of his being screamed in contradiction. “Obito died a long time ago.”
Obito’s mouth opened as if to say something, but Kakashi wasn’t waiting for answers. He couldn’t. Not like this. His past was too raw, too painful.
Kakashi’s breath caught as his memories flooded back—memories of that fateful day at Kannabi Bridge, of the final fight, of his friend dying in his arms. The words Obito had spoken to him just before he died echoed in his mind: "Kakashi, I leave this to you." The Sharingan.
His final gift.
Kakashi’s hands tightened on his sword, the weight of his past—his failure—pressing down on him harder than the weapon itself. This wasn’t just a ghost; this was a challenge, an impossible puzzle he wasn’t sure he could solve.
Obito wasn’t supposed to be here.
But Kakashi couldn’t deny what he was seeing. The figure before him wore the same expression of confusion that had once been his own in the moments after Obito’s death. His mind reeled.
"Why… why are you here?" Kakashi whispered, though the words felt wrong, as if they came from a place of desperation more than understanding.
Obito’s hand dropped slowly from the sword, his voice barely audible. "I… I don’t know. I don’t understand what happened."
But Kakashi couldn’t trust him. He couldn’t trust this version of Obito, no matter how much he wanted to. There was too much at stake. Too much history between them, too much pain.
The sword remained at Obito’s throat, cold and unyielding. Kakashi’s expression was hidden, but the weight of what he was about to do—the choice he was about to make—was clear in his eyes. He was no longer just a friend or an enemy. They were both strangers to each other now, caught in the clash of fate and the broken pieces of a past that could never be erased.
"Who are you?" Kakashi asked again, his voice trembling just slightly. This time, there was no anger. Only a quiet, terrifying uncertainty.
Obito’s eyes locked onto Kakashi’s, filled with the same pain, the same sorrow. But this time, there was no one else left to fight.
And yet, in this strange, warped world where the impossible had come to pass, the battle for their future was just beginning.
