Work Text:

The creatures of his Father’s creation did not interest him at first. The myriad living entities that now roamed the earth were fascinating because each one of them was a testament to His divine Will, but not one of them could compare to angels, Lucifer thought. Until He created them. A man and a woman, his Father called them. Or was that the name they had chosen for themselves? Lucifer wished he’d paid closer attention but lately he had been restless, coming up with his own ideas, dreaming, desperate to Create, but the other angels didn’t seem too eager to listen to his suggestions.

Lucifer observed them from afar for a while, somewhat sceptical of their abilities. Could they really think for themselves? Had his Father given them dominion over all creatures on earth? He grew curious, more drawn to them. They were so unpredictable, willful, walking contradictions so powerful yet so fragile. Every day he got closer, it wasn’t as if he wasn’t allowed to wander around Eden, and he was just watching, listening. The man seemed to think he had been granted authority over the woman, which she would not have. And really, why should she? Had they not been created as equals?

Rebel! Villain! The man called her, but Lucifer disagreed. He could recognize a dreamer like himself. He could stray further away from his ordained purpose, he could let her see him, maybe even talk to her. No one in Heaven had to know. Only they already did.

“You have been neglecting your duties, brother. You spend too much time with your eyes on the garden. Have you grown fond of the creatures there? Or just the woman?”

“I think… I love her,” Lucifer said, there was no reason to lie. He had never lied to another angel, he wasn’t about to start.

“Of course you do. Angels are meant to love all of Creation.”

“No! Not like that—”

“Yes, Lucifer. Just like that,” the angel said to him with a thunderlike voice. “If you know what’s good for you. Although recently it’s clear that maybe you don’t. Your antics might have once been tolerated, but if you think that Father will let you interfere with His favorite creatures you are very much mistaken. So stop being a troublemaker and remember your place, light bearer.”

But simply letting go was not in Lucifer’s nature. When he found out the woman had fled the garden he knew he had to go to her, even if doing so meant yet another act of defiance.

Lucifer would have readily accepted any punishment for his disobedience when he found her. Lilith. The divine love he had known as an angel, paled in comparison to the flame that seemed to be consuming him from within.

“You are an angel, would you give up Heaven to be with me?”

“We can create our own Paradise.”

He fell for her. She fell for him. And they fell hard, all the way to Hell.
