Appreciate the Pink and Orange Sunset Until the Sun Falls Below the Horizon and No Longer Illuminates the Sky

Summary:

Just like how a sunset acts as a bridge between day and night, Martha and Ryouma's lives act as a bridge that connects the futures of Earth, Honyara Land, and...

Notes:

I've been working on this fic for a while, side-by-side with the IKEA fic since they're so intertwined. Not enough to be one fic, though. This one takes place overlapping Strands of Fate (and technically the Support Group fic in the grand scheme of things). The IKEA fic, on the other hand, is a direct sequel timeline-wise to the Support Group fic!

Also, look how long that title is!

Anyway, is this fic done? Nope. Still working on it. But I've got enough of a buffer, and I'm going to pace myself by posting only on Tuesdays.

The IKEA fic also isn't done, but I'm planning for that one to be released during Pretty Boy Week in April! Some of the prompts work for what I've already written! (Though I admit the way I'm connecting some might be kind of a stretch...)

Chapter 1: Civil Twilight

Summary:

Furanui made a mistake, and wants to make it up to Martha.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Furanui's fingers glided across the bookshelf. He had gone through all the shelves in the guest room, and had grown bored from staring at the wall, so now he was exploring the books in the common area.

It was the weekend, and Martha had gone out on yet another shopping spree with Ichiro.

He pulled out a random book. “Elementary School Memories,” the cover read, in golden text on a red background.

“Hm…” He flipped through, scanning the faces of all the children.

“Furanui, I’m—” Bags from various stores fell to the ground as Martha rushed to karate chop the book out of the prince’s hands.

“Martha, what—”

“You can read any book in my apartment—just not that one! Got it?”

Furanui was completely taken aback, and could only nod at the request.

Martha made to pick up the book, but both of them realized that knocking the book to the floor made it open to a page.

“Don’t look!” they cried out—but it was too late. Furanui had already caught a glimpse of Magozaemon.

Aside from the occasional “yes” or “no” when Furanui asked a question about Earth culture, Martha didn’t talk to him for the next few weeks. Not in school, where Furanui was posing as a student, and not in the apartment.

Furanui decided that this could not go on for any longer, and so he went out on a walk to clear his head.

“Oh! Furanui. You shop here?” Ryouma asked. He was about to step into a small grocery store.

“No,” he replied. “I was wandering aimlessly, looking for an answer to the matter at hand…” He peered down his nose at the boy. “I was not expecting to look for my answer in one of my brother’s knights.”

“O-Oh?”

“I have upset one of my knights. Tell me—how do I fix it?”

“Well, that depends on who you upset and how…but I’m guessing it’s Martha because you’re staying with them right now?”

“Bingo,” Furanui replied, before adding, “…did I use that right?”

Ryouma nodded. “Well, since you’re here, you could always shop for groceries? Maybe cook something for them as an apology.”

“Hm…” Furanui gave it some thought before giving a hearty laugh and slapping Ryouma on the back. “Excellent idea! Let’s buy ingredients!”

Martha sniffed as they entered their apartment, before quickly covering their nose. “Gah! What’s that stench?!” Black smoke drifted out of the kitchen. “Furanui? What are you doing?” They turned the corner and—

The cabinets and wall above the stove were singed.

“My apologies, Martha.” He snapped his fingers and the kitchen was immediately clean. A bottle materialized in his hands out of nothing. “Honyara Wine?”

“Are you drunk?”

“No. As you can see, the bottle is unopened. I would never attempt to cook a traditional Honyara Land feast without a clear head.”

“So…” Martha’s eyes narrowed. “You just can’t cook.”

“I wouldn’t say that. Simply, I do not have much experience in crafting certain meals. I am a prince, after all.”

“And just making sure…this is alcoholic wine?”

“Honyara Wine.”

Martha sighed at the non-answer, went over to a cabinet, and pulled out two glasses.

“I just want to be absolutely clear…you said this was wine?” Martha asked, swirling their second glass. The two of them were sitting on the sofa. Furanui had only taken a sip from his own glass, and was already curling up next to Martha, smothering his face in their shirt.

“Mmhmm…”

“It really just tastes like juice to me.”

’s wine, Furanui murmured.

“Are you okay? Maybe this wasn’t a good idea… I figured it’d be fine even though I’m underage since you were so confident about it and it’s magical wine, but you’re such a lightweight… Are you drinking underage, too? Is there even a drinking age in Honyara Land?”

“Alluvyuu…”

“Huh?”

Furanui sat up and looked directly into Martha’s eyes, then repeated, slowly, “I…love…you…” He leaned in and captured Martha’s lips in a sloppy kiss.

Martha woke up with bleary eyes and a headache, and guessed that the wine actually did kick in after all.

And then, there was a dawning horror.

This was the guest room.

“Fuuraanuuii!” Martha shouted, getting out of bed—though the prince wasn’t there. And something was wrong with their voice. “What did you do?”

“What?” a familiar voice called out from the master bedroom.

Martha stormed out and went to their room, slamming open the door—only to see Martha in the bed, in one of their favorite nighties.

“You cast a spell on us!” Martha—in Furanui’s body, complete with abs and sweatpants—still used their cute mannerisms. They stomped their foot. “Change us back, right now!”

“I have to figure out how,” Furanui replied in the bottom of Martha’s vocal range. He stood and straightened out the frilly pajamas, then walked over and stood in front of Martha, arms crossed. “Magic has intent. What’s the last thing you remember?”

“Uh…um…” Martha blushed. “Y-You…”

“I…” Furanui waited for them to finish the sentence.

“…k-kissed me…”

“Ah! Then perhaps this will do the trick!”

Furanui took a few quick steps towards Martha, before jumping up and wrapping his legs around his torso. Martha stumbled back into the wall.

“Wha—”

Furanui gave Martha a peck on the cheek, and before they could say anything else, their perspective changed, and suddenly Martha was the one with their lips on Furanui’s cheek.

“W-Wha—”

“It worked!” Furanui announced, before a blush dusted his cheeks, the realization of how close Martha was and how they were holding each other dawning on him. “My apologies, this behavior is unbecoming of a prince…”

As he made a move to place Martha back onto the floor, Martha tightened their embrace around his shoulders.

“Martha?”

“I don’t mind if you want to hold me like this for a little longer,” they said, also blushing. “You’re really strong…”

“All right, then…”

He stood there for a moment, before Martha asked, “So that was it, then? It was just a kiss that caused us to swap bodies? But what was the ‘intent’ behind the spell?”

“I…” Furanui cleared his throat and averted his gaze. “Perhaps my inebriated self wanted to show how you look from my perspective.”

Notes:

All the chapter titles are going to be the stages of evening twilight! Because ~*symbolism*~

So, this chapter and the next place between chapters five and six of Strands of Fate, specifically in September/October. Martha and Furanui already shared a first kiss outside the Kurotama during the summer, but that didn't make them official.

Couldn't resist having Furanui say "bingo," since this is my fic for the bingo and I'm going for a full board lol

The prompts I used for this chapter were reading books, food/cooking, love confessions, drunk kiss, bodyswap, and cheek kiss.

I feel that since Martha's main hobby is baking, Furanui should be on the other end of the spectrum and have no cooking talent. His claim that he doesn't have experience in cooking "certain" meals is a lie. He would pour milk into a bowl of cereal and it would combust.

I also see him being a lightweight. Realistically, it would be Martha since I think I read losing weight lowers alcohol tolerance? But I'll chalk that up to it being Honyara Wine.

Adding the bodyswap to my list of fake screencap ideas...
