Chapter 1: Chapter 1: MePhone4's POV

Chapter Text

MePhone was never one for parties, if he was being honest. He hadn't been to one before, not really, but that was beside the point.

His contestants decided to throw a party for the winter holiday, and for some inexplicable reason, invited guests he never thought he'd see this side of the island– most notably being Two. Some of their contestants tagged along as well, of course, but MePhone admittedly paid them little mind.

He hadn't talked to Two in what felt like forever, even though realistically it had only been a few weeks. Something about them just… clicked with him, in a way he couldn't describe. Perhaps that's why MePhone was practically attached to Two’s hip the entire night, even as he chatted away with his and his fellow host’s contestants alike.

It wasn't until Nickel, prosthetic arm slung around the shoulders of someone who looked identical to him (minus the perpetual aura of sarcasm), walked up with an absolutely shit-eating grin.

“Yo, MePhone! Great party, huh?”

MePhone rolled his eyes. “Eh, its alright. Never thought I'd see you so happy though.”

The contestant only shrugged, smile getting wider. “Oh, I'll be real happy once you realize where you and your friend are. Don'tcha know what you're standing under?” He pointed to the doorframe above his host and Two, raising his eyebrows a few times for emphasis.

MePhone glanced up, and his coolant instantly turned to ice.

Oh. Great.

He's standing under a sprig of mistletoe, with only Two beside him.

Nickel’s voice was loud, drawing stares from other contrasts, which turned to chatter, which turned to even more stares, and soon the whole room was focused solely on the two hosts.

“Ooh, I knew that stuff would come in handy!” The voice of Lightbulb filtered over from the far corner, sending a wave of giggling through the crowd.

Another voice, likely Floory, shouted encouragement from out of sight as well. “C’mon, mate, it's just like a challenge! But a festive one, of course.”

A chorus of agreements rang out, followed by a few whoops and hollers that made it abundantly clear that not a single contestant would be content until the tradition was carried out.

One final voice that MePhone couldn't place for the life of him shouted a sentence that only made the crowd grow more restless.

“Just kiss already!”

MePhone finally turned to Two after sending a sweeping glare over the group, screen face tinged pink around the edges. “Sorry, they're just kinda… like this. I don't mind, but we don't have to if you d–”

The robot's voice was suddenly cut off by Two abruptly grabbing the lapels of his gaudy Christmas button down, holding eye contact for only a moment before they leaned in and kissed him square on the screen, right where his digital mouth was.

There's a beat of silence, so quiet one could hear a pin drop, before Two pulled away with an overexaggerated “MMMWAH!”

A cheer erupted in the crowd, even with a highly annoying whistle from Trophy, and all at once the eyes were off of the pair and the party resumed.

The air around them was tense, and MePhone could barely think past the split-second sensation of Two kissing him. His entire face had touch sensitivity, of course, considering he was technically a phone, but it was… odd. Though not in a bad way.

“Well that was something!” Two’s voice cut through his thoughts, and he turned to look them in the eye. “My contestants back home aren't like this at all. Yours are… quite the jokesters, haha!”

MePhone shrugged, laughing a little awkwardly. Why was he so nervous all of a sudden? It wasn't real, right…?

So why did he want to do it again?

“Well, you know what they say, ‘like host, like contestant’!”

Two laughed right back, but MePhone could tell they were hiding something. They almost seemed uncomfortable, but apparently enjoyed his joke regardless.

“I don't think anyone says that, but it works here– you do love jokes!”

“That I do!”

The uneasy, stifling air around them did not fade, and neither of them seemed to relax whatsoever even as the moment passed. Something had changed between them, despite the fact that it was just something silly between friends.

They stood like that, still under the mistletoe, for a good few minutes before Two abruptly clapped their hands together and gestured towards the kitchen.

“Ooo-kay then! I'm going to grab something to eat, wanna come?”

MePhone thought for a moment, before he shook his head. “No thanks, Two, I… I'm not really hungry right now, haha.”

A beat of silence stretched between them, before Two nodded and took a step back.

“Um. Alrighty then! I'll… see you around.”

The phone nodded back, and Two left without another word.

Uuugh.

MePhone scrubbed his hands down his face, though he slowed for a moment to ghost his fingers over his mouth. Why couldn't he get that feeling out of his head? Was it just because it was unfamiliar? Perhaps. But why did it make his processor hot? He wasn't stressed about anything. He was actually quite happy, despite whatever in the world had just transpired.

Was he coming down with something? MePhone knew he could technically get sick, but he felt fine the entire night beforehand. Was Two sick?

Ah. Two. Right.

MePhone had upset them, hadn't he? He was often quite bad at reading body language, but even he could understand that Two looked… troubled. It was his own contestants, after all, that had pushed the two of them to kiss.

Urgh. And then MePhone refused their offer to get a snack together… He made Two feel weird about it all, and then pushed them away.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

MePhone needed to get out of there. He needed some air.

And he needed to think.
