Empty Promises

Work Text:

I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you. I left because no matter how much I loved you, I was always the one hurting. You wanted all the benefits of my love without the responsibility of taking care of my heart. And I finally realized I deserve more than empty promises and half efforts.

Severus’ hands trembled as he read the letter. He knew one day he’d push Harry away. He glanced at the clock Harry had purchased for their first anniversary. Severus’ hand was home and Harry’s was on Ministry. He knew not accepting as plus one would hurt Harry, but this much? Tears blurred his vision as he looked down on the letter again.

He wiped them away with determination and apparated to the Ministry.

The celebration was dying down as Severus made his appearance. He locked eyes with Granger-Weasley as he looked around for messy black hair. She nodded behind him and turned back to her husband. Severus spun around and nearly ran into Harry.

“Snape?”

“You complete idiot! You leave our home and only leave me some note?!”

“Severus people are staring.”

Harry looked worn down, his hair sticking up at odd angles and eyes rimmed red.

“You wanted me here! Well here I am Harry! Here I am proclaiming my undying love to you like you wanted!”

Severus didn’t realize he was crying until Harry’s thumbs brushed them away.

“Love, calm down. Let’s talk about this outside.”

“Why? So you can leave me again?”

Severus knew he was fully sobbing and didn’t care. How dare Harry take his heart with him.

Harry looked at him, tears streaming down his own face.

“Do you think I wanted to leave? Throw nearly two years away? No. I tried. I tried so hard to get you to see how I felt, and you kept blowing it off. I just wanted you to see how I felt, Sev.”

Severus grabbed the hysterical man and pulled him to his chest.

“I see Harry. I do. Let’s go home and talk some more.”

Harry nodded and threaded their fingers together leading them out.

Severus’ hand felt for the small box nestled in his pocket, he’d save that for another day.
