Work Text:
On the 14th of February love is in the air, especially for Haru. He has one goal today and that is to be Daisuke’s Valentine. He wakes up nice and early, so he can leave his Valentines card for Daisuke in the Modern Crime Prevention Task Force office. But first, he needs to write the card. He takes it out from the drawer he’d been keeping it in and smiled for a moment as he looked at it. On the front of the card was a picture of a teddy bear holding a heart and above it, it said “Happy Valentines Day”. He placed the card on the table and got a pen. Now he just had to think of a romantic message.
“Hmm, let’s see.”
He scratched his chin as he tried to come up with some ideas.
“What about. To Daisuke. No, Dear Daisuke… Happy Valentines Day! I have biggest ever crush on you!... and I love you SO much…Love… From your Valentine.”
Haru couldn’t hold back his excitement as he jotted down his ideas. He had never written a Valentines card before (Neither have I 😭🙏), but he thought he did pretty well. After he’d finished writing, he slid the card into an envelope and wrote “Daisuke” on it. Everything was going perfectly, now he just needed to leave it for Daisuke. He carefully packed the card into his bag, making sure it wouldn’t get damaged or bent, and rushed out of his apartment to work. When he arrived, it was still 7:30am so he’d arrived in good time. He was the first person there out of his division. He walked over to Daisuke’s desk and placed his card in the centre, so Daisuke definitely couldn’t miss it. His heart was beating fast as he returned to his own desk. Now he just had to wait. Over the next 20 minutes everyone started arriving. Any moment now, Daisuke would come through those doors. As Haru waited in anticipation, he constantly glanced over at Daisuke’s desk, making sure no one else had noticed the card yet. He wanted Daisuke to be the first to see it. And then it happened. Daisuke walked right in. He immediately noticed the card on his desk and slowly walked over to it. He picked up the envelope and examined it for a few seconds. Haru was beginning to blush and looked away, so Daisuke wouldn’t notice him. He couldn’t believe Daisuke was actually looking at his card. He was filled with excitement. Daisuke carefully opened the envelope and took out the card. He looked at the picture on the front and smirked slightly. He then opened it up and began to read it. As Daisuke’s eyes scanned the card, Haru was getting more and more flustered. He was now bright red. After Daisuke had finished reading, he left the card in a drawer and got to work. Haru tried to calm himself and slowly looked over at Daisuke, who was now completely concentrated on his work. He slowly scooted himself closer to Daisuke.
“So, what was that card you got? Was it a Valentines card.”
Haru grinned, still blushing slightly. Daisuke looked over at him with his normal neutral expression.
“Yes… it was.”
Haru leaned closer.
“Ooo… Do you have any idea who it’s from?”
Haru looked around, pretending he suspected someone else in the room. Daisuke shook his head.
“Not really. But I don’t really care about that kind of stuff. So, if you know who gave me this, tell them I’m not interested.”
Haru felt like he had been stabbed through the heart. “Not interested”?!
“R-right… yeah… will do…”
Daisuke returned to his work and Haru was left heartbroken. He scooted back to his desk and looked away from Daisuke in shame. He let a few tears fall as he began regretting everything. He really thought him and Daisuke had a strong bond. Was he wrong?
Later on that day, they were working in the field together. They had been assigned to keep an eye on some people who were suspected drug dealers. As Haru stood next to Daisuke, he was barely able to talk. All he could think about was the rejection. Did Daisuke really not love him? Was it possible Daisuke knew it was him who wrote the card? Or maybe he thought it was someone else. Either way, he said he wasn’t looking for love. So, why would it matter? As Haru was deep in thought, he was suddenly interrupted by Daisuke.
“Haru! Wake up! The criminals noticed us and they’re getting away!”
Haru suddenly snapped back to reality. He quickly started following Daisuke as he chased the criminals. Daisuke called for backup and told HEUSC to get his car ready. He then rushed to his car. As Haru caught up, Daisuke grabbed his arm and pulled him in as they started chasing the criminals down the street. Haru gasped slightly at the sudden contact and Daisuke turned to him with a stern expression.
“What’s got into you today? You need to pay attention at all times. They got away because you were too busy daydreaming!”
Haru sighed. Daisuke suddenly started driving faster to catch up with them. Eventually, them and a bunch of police cars had surrounded the criminals. Daisuke let out a sigh of relief. Haru looked over at the criminals as they got dragged away in hand cuffs. He then looked back at Daisuke.
“I’m really sorry.”
Daisuke sighed.
“It’s ok. I just got a little mad because the criminals were getting away. Just make sure you pay attention from now on.”
Haru nodded.
When they got back to the office, Daisuke noticed Haru’s depressed state.
“Haru, are you alright? You haven’t been acting like yourself today. Did something happen?”
Haru slowly looked up at him.
“No, I’m fine… Don’t worry.”
“Well… If you want to talk, I’m here. I’ll try to be as comforting as possible. You are my best friend after all.”
Daisuke smiled slightly and Haru returned one. They were friends… That’s all they were…
They both get back to work.
At the end of the day, Daisuke approached Haru.
“Hey. Haru. Why don’t we brighten up your day and spend the evening together? We could go to my house or your house. You can choose.”
Haru’s face lit up.
“Sure! We can go to my place, and we could watch some TV! I can even make you another one of those Kato Family Specials. Cause I know how much you like it!”
Daisuke chuckled.
“Yeah. That would be great.”
They walked to Haru’s apartment together. They then walked up the steps to the front door and Haru unlocked it. They stepped inside and Daisuke looked around.
“I forgot how small this place was.”
Haru rolled his eyes.
“Just take a seat. I’m gonna make you your favourite food.”
Daisuke knelt on the floor and watched Haru remake his all time favourite “Kato Family Special”. Haru handed him a bowlful and he immediately dug in. Haru grinned as he watched Daisuke enjoy his meal. He then dug into his own food. After they had finished the meal, Haru invited Daisuke to join him on the sofa to watch TV. Daisuke agreed and sat inches away from Haru. Haru could already feel his heartrate increasing. They were so close. Haru put a Japanese movie, and they watched it together. Throughout the whole movie, Haru could only think about how close they were and how romantic it felt. He kept on glancing over at Daisuke, his face was becoming redder. Eventually, Daisuke noticed him.
“Is everything ok? You’re really red. Are you too hot?”
Haru froze.
“Um… Err.”
Daisuke chuckled.
“I feel like there’s been something going on all day that you haven’t told me about.”
Haru struggled to speak.
“It’s just…”
“Whatever it is, I promise I won’t judge.”
Haru nods and tries to build up his courage. This is his chance to confess. He took a deep breath and spoke.
“Daisuke! That Valentine’s card was from me!”
Haru quickly covered his mouth. He can’t believe he just said that. Daisuke paused for a moment.
“You… Wrote that card? Oh, now I get it…”
Haru looked at Daisuke, tears forming in his eyes. Daisuke looked back at him. He then wrapped his arms around Haru, pulling him close. Haru gasped. Daisuke was… hugging him. He smiled slightly through his tears and hugged Daisuke back. He then managed to get out a few muffled sentences.
“Yeah… It’s true… I wrote that card… Because I love you… More than anything.”
Daisuke smiled and spoke quietly.
“I love you too.”
Haru froze. Did he just hear that right? Did Daisuke just say, “I love you”?!
“Huh… But I thought you said-”
Haru got cut off by Daisuke.
“I know what I said earlier. It was a lie. I DO care about love. I was just afraid like you I guess.”
Haru gasped again.
“So, you really do love me?”
Daisuke nodded.
Haru started crying again, but with happy tears. He then buried his face into Daisuke’s neck. Daisuke smiled and started gently stroking Haru’s hair. The sensation gave Haru butterflies. He wanted more. After a few seconds, he slowly looked up from Daisuke’s neck and Daisuke looked back at him. Haru started to feel the tension between them, but he didn’t know if he should make the first move. After a few seconds, he decided to go for it. He quickly leaned in and pressed his lips against Daisuke’s. As he gently kissed Daisuke, he felt Daisuke kissing him back. He couldn’t believe this was happening. It had to be a dream. But it wasn’t. It was 100% real. As they deepened the kiss, they pulled each other closer. Haru slipped his tongue into Daisuke’s mouth, and they started fully making out. As they kissed, the world around them seemed to disappear. All that mattered in that moment was their love. After a few minutes, Haru pulled back. Trails of saliva dripped out their mouths as they quietly panted. They both looked at each other.
“wow…”
Haru was still in disbelief. After Daisuke had caught his breath he spoke.
“Well. That’s one way to spend Valentines Day. I think this is the best Valentines Day I’ve ever had. Thanks, Haru.”
Haru smiled.
“No. Thank you! You gave me the thing I’ve been looking for my whole life. True love.”
They both chuckled and snuggled up together as they spent the rest of the evening talking and laughing. This was definitely the best Valentines Day either of them had ever had.
