Ice Cube, at least in middle school, wasn't one for love or affection. But her entire "group" FreeSmart really was. For one, it was very open by the halfway point of 8th grade that Pencil and Match were dating. Yeah, the leader and second in command were dating. Ruby was trying to pull Flower, Bubble was... trying to get Fanny. Although honestly, it was pretty clear Fanny was more interested in someone else entirely. Book was looking into finding a guy to date. But Ice Cube? She would throw shade at anyone who tried to get with her, push them away, and decline. She was like that for such a long time, until she met Gaty...
Ice Cube stood at the bus stop, waiting for it to arrive. It was a cold yet sunny day, as she scrolled through her phone to find something to listen to. It was Valentine's Day, and she had bought a box of chocolates for Gaty. Ice Cube eventually found a song called Valentine, so she clicked it and put her phone in her pocket.
I've rejected affection for years and years.
Now I have it, and damn it, it's kind of weird.
Ice Cube didn't want to say she exactly agreed to the lyrics, but they did hit close to home.
He tells me I'm pretty, don't know how to respond.
I tell him that he's pretty too, can I say that? Don't have a clue.
Ice Cube felt her cheeks start to heat as she thought about Gaty in those lines. She would tell Ice Cube she's pretty... Ice Cube never knew how to respond.
With every passing moment, I surprise myself.
I'm scared of flies, I'm scared of guys, someone please help.
...Why could Ice Cube see herself in this song so well?
'Cause I think I've fallen in love this time.
I blinked and suddenly, I had a Valentine.
Gaty. Gaty was Ice Cube's Valentine. That period of time was such a blur... As if Ice Cube had blinked and suddenly she was in a relationship...
What if he's the last one I kiss?
What if he's the only one I'll ever miss?
Ice Cube couldn't exactly agree to the lyrics, but she did miss Gaty whenever she wasn't around.
Maybe I should run, I'm only 21
I don't even know who I want to become.
Ice Cube didn't want to run from Gaty, but... outside of Ice Cube's sport, she didn't know what she wanted to do.
I've lost all control of my heartbeat now.
It was at this point Ice Cube realized she was blushing and her heart was pounding. Oh, how she loved Gaty.
Got caught in a romance with him somehow.
Ice Cube really didn't know how she got Gaty, but she did.
I still feel a shock through every bone, when I hear an "I love you".
'Cause now I've got someone to lose.
Ice Cube could hear Gaty say those three words, she reciprocated those feeling, and she didn't want to lose that.
The first one to ever like me back, I'm seconds away from a heart attack.
Ice Cube was on the other side, people constantly wanting her, but she never had feelings back.
How the hell did I fall in love this time?
And honestly, I can't believe I get to call you mine.
Yeah... that was true.
I blinked, and suddenly I had a Valentine.
Ice Cube felt what the song described so well. She looked up and the bus had just arrived, as she got on and sat down. She couldn't wait for Gaty to see the chocolates Ice Cube got. People were chatting about love, it was so high in the air. Ice Cube just had to wait to see her Valentine. Her love. Gaty.
