Work Text:
Ren sat silently, his back leaning against the cold stone. The music filled the silent winter air, bringing a small spark of life to the graveyard. It was just him today, and he couldn’t have been more thankful.
“...Another Valentine's alone. I know you’d hate seeing me like this, but no one can compare to you. No one can match your wit or charm. No one to make playful jabs at, or to push to be better so they can surpass me. No… rivals. But I think that makes sense. Despite what you think, you were special, Akechi. Incredibly special. You were the thief that stole my heart.” He laughed.
“You would have hated that. Probably scoff and say something like, ‘You and your foolish sentimentality. What good will it do for you? …But if you must know, I hold you in high regards as well.’ And that is exactly how you would say it, in your little stuck up way that I love.”
Ren sighed, resting his head against the tombstone, letting the music soothe him before singing along quietly. “I am all alone tonight… and I kept on asking myself questions. Conceited there was a time I never really doubted myself. But tonight got me thinkin ‘bout it all, if I am the fool or what not…”
“The others miss you, you know. Not just me. Of course not as much as I do, but… I see it in their eyes. Sometimes they’ll say that something reminds them of you. We all wish you were here, especially me and Sumire. She couldn’t make it today, but… I’m glad it’s just us. Like it used to be. Before things got complicated. Just us at the Jazz Jin, drinking mocktails and debating with another, or playing chess in Leblanc.”
Ren wiped at his eyes, sighing. “I’ll leave the music, I know you liked the singer. I’ll be back soon, next month. Maybe earlier if I’m free. I’ll clean up your grave too, bring some flowers and books.”
Ren got up, stretching. He gave a final look at the tombstone. “I love you, Goro. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
