Chapter Text
Logan was annoyed. No surprise there, it’s practically his default setting. That’s what he was known for. The grumpy, constantly angry wolverine. Except…
It wasn’t. Not lately, not ever, as his fits of anger usually originated from anxiety, but that was another thing. Lately, bad emotions weren’t the standard anymore. He was happy for more than just few moments- hell, he thinks he actually went a whole day without falling into bad mood. And the reason for the change was one. It was optimistic and confident and a menace in the best ways possible. And blue.
He and Kurt started dating about three months ago and it has been one of the best times of Logan’s life. But as everything else nice that he ever had, it couldn’t last long. And all it took for the ‘good mood streak’ to be broken was a simple date. It was also the reason he was still in his bed, glaring daggers at the calendar hanging across from him. 14th of February.
Logan didn’t necessarily hate Valentine’s Day. Sure, he thought it was a stupid commercial holiday and the tacky décor everywhere got on his nerves, but he solved it by simply not celebrating and avoiding going outside. But that wouldn’t be a possibility today. Not with Kurt. This shitty celebration was exactly the type of shit the blue mutant liked.
And what’s worse, being dragged outside wasn’t even the main issue. It was the simple fact that the act of ‘being someone’s valentine’ made things feel official and public in a way the made Logan’s knuckles itch and his claws shift. Which was fucking ridiculous- they have been official from the start and they didn’t exactly hide their relationship either. Especially in front of Scott. The man still wasn’t sure if he approved of Logan dating the team’s resident sunshine and Logan was having too much fun watching his conflicted expressions.
There’s a knock on the door and he finds himself hoping it isn’t Kurt. What the hell was wrong with him?! He loved his fuzzy boyfriend, even though he still had trouble saying it out loud. And Kurt didn’t mind that, he was patient with Logan, never rushing him. So why does one stupid holiday feel like too much?
There was another knock. Or maybe multiple, the Canadian wasn’t exactly paying attention. “Liebchen?” Add that to the weird list of weird things that were wrong with him today. Not getting distracted was crucial, especially when your species was one wrong speech away from becoming the public enemy once again.
Sharp smell of sulphur pulls him from his grim thoughts into grimmer reality, and that’s all it takes to push him back into old habits. “Damnit blue! Can’t ya fuckin’ knock?! Seriously the door is there for a reason” He snaps. He doesn’t look up at the intruding mutant, he feels far too guilty for that. He doesn’t regret snapping, doesn’t have the capacity for that, but he feels bad about the thoughts and feelings plaguing him since he saw today’s date.
When he finally gathers the courage to look up, Kurt doesn’t look taken aback, or angry. He’s fucking smirking and it makes Logan growl. “Something funny elf?”
The blue shit grins wider, showing off his fangs that are far too long and sharp to look cute. They still do. “Ja.” He answers confidently. Then, with a BAMF sound and an accompanying purple cloud which smells of brimstone, he’s no longer standing by the door, but instead laying next to Logan, propped up on his elbow, shit-eating grin still present on his face. “Your tantrums are quite amusing.”
Logan’s blood boils. Tantrums?! Did his boyfriend have a death wish?
Before he can think about it, his claws pierce his skin… and embed themselves into the fucking pillow of all things. Kurt gives him an unimpressed look. “You’re paying for that one.” He announces, like Logan cares. Honestly, the taller mutant doesn’t even care himself, he’s just having fun riling his boyfriend up.
You can’t kill your boyfriend, Logan. You love him remember. The older mutant reminds himself, sheathing his claws. Then, just because he’s still angry, he takes the ripped pillow and smacks Kurt with all the force he can afford without risking an injury to the other. The attack clearly takes the teleporter by surprise, because he doesn’t evade. Once the pillow leaves his face, Kurt spits out some of the filling and laughs, his tail swatting at Logan.
The sound fills Logan’s ears, and it’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever heard and his own laughter joins Kurt’s. For a while all is as it should be, no doubts, just him and Kurt. Then the older mutant’s gaze lands on the cursed calendar. He’ll have to take that thing down and shred it. Kurt clearly feels the shift in his mood, or maybe he’s getting obvious. Either way, he’s being studied by a pair of concerned yellow eyes.
“Logan…”
“What did you come here for anyway, elf?” Logan quickly asks. Something tells him he doesn’t want to know, but anything is better than Kurt’s concerned questioning.
The furry mutant seems to study him for a while, his tail flicking behind him uncertainly. Then he decides it’s not worth pushing. “I made you a breakfast.”
Logan raises his eyebrows. “Heart-shaped waffles cover in sweet pink goo? I don’t do breakfasts, elf.” He does make up for it by eating whenever he can during the day, but mornings just weren’t meant for food. Not that it was morning- he managed to stay holed up in here until noon.
“I won’t slave in the kitchen for something you wouldn’t appreciate. I made you black coffee and if you want to drink it hot, you better get downstairs. Logan smiles and kisses Kurt on the cheek. He regrets it immediately. Kurt’s tail wags happily and the man is smiling in the way that makes his hearth warm up. But right now, it feels wrong. The kiss feels wrong, the happiness feels wrong. The way just one kiss is enough to make the other man light up like this is telling of how much he cares. Kurt’s feelings for Logan and his attachment to him are being shoved in the shorter man’s face and it makes his skin crawl.
Suddenly every point of contact with the blue fur feels suffocating and sickening. But he loves Kurt. He does and he can’t just tell the other that his touch is making him uncomfortable. It’s not that he wouldn’t understand, he would, but where Kurt could control conversations, arguments and even Logan’s anger at times, he couldn’t stop himself from feeling. And Logan would rather tear out his own heart from his chest over and over again before he would hurt the younger man. And it wasn’t as much because of them dating. It was from before, when they were just friends. Except, ‘just’ friends isn’t right. It suggests that their friendship meant less than their relationship, like it was insignificant now that they were dating. He hated it, what they had was the best thing Logan ever had, when he fell for Kurt, when they became ‘something’, he never thought it would change. He didn’t want it to change. On a day like this, more then ever, he missed their friendship.
The whole situation is getting too overwhelming, he feels like he might go insane any second- if he hasn’t already. So, he gets up and smiles at Kurt over his shoulder. “Then we better hurry up, blue.” He says, already half-way out the door.
Just as Kurt said, there’s a mug of black coffee waiting on the table, placed in front of Logan’s seat. Across from him is something he assumes is black tea. Kurt sits down and takes it, then waits for his boyfriend to do the same. And who is Logan to keep his coff- Kurt, waiting. He sits and looks around. He’s fully expecting to get jump-scared by some overly bright decorations, but there’s nothing. He looks at Kurt with raised eyebrow. “Romantic breakfast?” He asks, the mischievous mutant across from him, of course, understands the implications.
“I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day in that way. I’m not a fan of the commercial holiday it’s become.”
“Become?” Logan questions and Kurt nods excitedly. Oh, he’s about to rant. The realization brings a smile to wolverine’s face. His elf’s rants are one thing that will never change.
“Today is supposed to be the celebration of saint Valentine. He was a clergyman in Rome, when the emperor Claudius II made a law that young men could not marry. He believed that single men were better soldiers.”
Logan cringes at that. The view was logical to him, and from experience he would say that the emperor was right. Single men had less to lose, so they fought harder. They didn’t have anyone to want to return to, so they worked longer and harder. Was Kurt lessening his effectivity? Was his need to protect him a strength or weakness? Was it different when they were friends? No, the desire to shield his best friend from harm was no different.
But Kurt continues. “Valentine did not agree. He thought love was important. He married many young couples in secrecy. When the emperor found out, he put Valentine into prison. The couples he helped send him cards, thanking him. On 14th of February, Valentine was executed. But we celebrate his fight for love and its importance. That’s the Valentine’s Day I celebrate.” Kurt looks up at him with tender look. “And I’d like it if you celebrated with me.”
Damn. Kurt really knew how to make it difficult to say no to him. Or maybe he was just Logan’s weakness. And fuck it, he’ll rather have a weakness than be without the blue-furred mutant. He opens his mouth but the teleporter is quicker.
“I planed a date for tonight, if you want to go.” He looks up at him hopefully. It prompts a smile to sneak onto Logan’s face. He wasn’t sold on this valentine either, but Kurt was worth sacrifices.
“Sure, elf. I’d like that”
