Summary
Leif is used to being on his own. Well, mostly, aside from the few friends he's collected in the years since his parents' untimely deaths. It may not have been /directly/ their fault but he has to place the blame somewhere and that somewhere just so happens to be the heroes that make up the Avengers.
On top of this, Leif has powers of his own. He's a medium, meaning he can see and converse with spirits that linger in the mortal world. Making it his life's mission to help these people cross over and be at peace, Leif just wants nothing more than to distance himself from the world of heroes and others like him. But that all screams to a halt when he's approached while helping a spirit pass over to the other side.

“Maomao?” He presses, fingers closing over hers and lowering their joined hands to her lap, and she blinks in surprise at the use of her name. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Their technique is sloppy,” she answers honestly. “I feel strain on my heart. They should have targeted the nervous system instead.”
Master Jinshi stares at her like she’s spoken a foreign language he can’t even begin to try and understand. She tries to explain.
“Certain snake venoms cause coagulation of the blood, which could have been effective and made the blood unable to move through my veins, but if the end result is simply making my heart stop beating by targeting the muscles involv-”
“Maomao,” Master Jinshi says, very calmly, “I need you to stop speaking now.”
(an assassin tries to kill jinshi with a poisoned blade that gets maomao instead) (she is obviously much less concerned about this than everyone else)

A glance in its direction tells her it is nearly midnight—it has been less than a day since she watched him fall, since she watched that filthy demon scum Lucifer’s brat called a housekeeper drive her blade into his back. She should be sleeping—come the morning, she’ll need to stand before the remaining exorcists as their sole leader, to stand strong in the face of the tragedy that’s befallen them all.
But lying here, in this bed where she spent so many nights with him, wearing a ratty old T-shirt bearing the logo of one of Earth’s rock bands that is much too big for her and still smells like him, nothing is real to her but the shape of his halo under her fingertips.
