Work Text:

The silence grew louder. The darkness became brighter. Boredom turned to excitement.

Only the sad Pianosaurus played on his own tiles.

And the prison's door opened. CatNap came in. He ran his eyes over the most empty cells. He knew that his master wanted everything to be good for him. CatNap obeyed, killing his friends and imprisoning some of them.

But Pianosaurus was different. He was the only one, who truly understand CatNap. In return, the purple cat listened to the dinosaur's music, which he composed just for him. It was a soft lullaby, which helped CatNap falling asleep. Even, he was the one who made everyone sleepy, himself, had problems with that. He loved the sound of the Pianosaurus' music.

These were their golden days.

Their bond didn't falter for long time. But when the Hour of Joy came, CatNap started to concentrate to The Prototype more than his real friends. He didn't have the heart to kill his best Piano friend, instead he put him into prison.

"How do you feel?" CatNap asked in his throaty, guttural voice.

"I'm hungry a bit," answered Pianosaurus.

CatNap's heart skipped a beat. Piano's voice was melodic. Heartbreakingly melodic. But this time, it carried a sorrowful melody. CatNap's tears wanted to show out, but he tried to supress them. Deep inside, it hurt. He couldn't help.

"I'm sorry," he breathed.

Pianosaurus released a surrendering sigh. Or chord.

"Is it really worth? Worth more than us?"

"You don't understand that, Piano," CatNap snapped his head to the side.

Pianosaurus found the eye contact. "Is that what you wanted? To be the puppet of him? The Prototype, who destroyed and will destroy everything and everyone."

"He saved me."

"But for what? For this?"

CatNap was about to turn on his heels and leave. Suddenly, Pianosaurus grabbed his paw. The tiles were slow, definitely didn't match with the rapid beat of the cat's heart.

"Theo."

CatNap froze.

"Theo, wait."

No one had ever knew his former name. Except his master...

"There's nothing to do without you. I miss you."

"How do you...? How do you know it?"

His friend squeezed his paw. Their last touch.

"You're my best friend, remember? It's natural between us. You're the tile on my keyboard. You're the moon on my nights. You're... my... my world."

CatNap was very, very close to bursting into tears. He didn't like to see when Piano saw him cry. But he missed the way he comforted him and played their music.

He slowly slipped from his grip. It was more difficult than it seemed.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Piano. Really."

Pianosaurus cried. Few toys peeked out from their cells. What they saw were simply a dinosaur and a cat. But actually, they were lovers, saying the last goodbye.

CatNap was now outside the prison's door. He looked into his love's eyes for the last time. His heart melted, fire of emotions burned inside him. But he had to do it. The Prototype's presence meant everything for him now.

"One day, you'll understand," he finished.

The lock on the door clicked for the last time.

Last time.

All night, just a distressed piano music echoed between the four walls.
