“We can still run away, you know.”
They’re standing at the corner of a wall, Sam on one side and Rowena on the other, fingers gripped loosely at the edge, unable to see the other. There’s no reason to keep up the tradition- lord knows they haven’t kept up any others- but there’s something about this one that feels special.
“I think Claire might actually murder me if I’ve forced her into a dress for nothing,” Rowena tells him, and Sam laughs, though it’s a soft, slightly damp sound. “Has Dean behaved himself?”
“Oh no, he’s already terrorized the catering table,” he tells her, and Rowena laughs, fingers tightening around his. “Cas is barely holding him back from eating an entire brick of cheese before the ceremony.”
“He’s doing a shit job, by the way,” Claire tells them, and Sam rolled his eyes. “Come on, we doing this first look or what? I can’t be flower girl and photographer at this rate without a pay bump.”
“We’re not even paying you,” Sam replies, and Claire snorts.
“Exactly my point!”
Rowena just squeezes Sam’s fingers in response, and something warm and soft and affectionate curls around his heart. They each take a breath in sync and then let go of each other’s hand to turn in time, seeing each other for the first time all day. Sam lets out a soft noise as he drinks her in, his expression so lovestruck it nearly blinds her.
She wasn’t foolish enough to have worn plain white- instead, the gown she wore was adorned with red embroidery and trim, tracing floral patterns up the skirt and sleeves. It cinched tight at her waist and flared at her feet, with a low neckline that hugged and lifted her breasts and sleeves threaded through with crimson, matching her hair- which fell in soft, vibrant waves around her shoulders, interspersed with tiny braids and little white beads.
“Rowena…” Sam’s voice is thick, and she finds herself blinking back tears of her own as she looked at him. The flash of Claire’s camera is background noise as she touches his face, memorizing features that were burned into her memory already.
“I’ve always said you clean up well,” she murmurs, stroking over the red bowtie he wore. “Such a pretty face you have, Samuel.”
“No one’s going to be looking at me when you’re up there beside me,” he chuckles wetly, and cupped her cheek in his palm. “God, are you sure you still wanna marry me?”
Rowena just smiled and kissed him softly- felt more than saw the flash of the camera with her eyes closed and held Sam closer for a few moments.
“I think we’ve waited long enough, don’t you?” she whispered, and pulled back to touch his cheek with gentle fingertips, brushing the red lipstick that stained his mouth with her thumb. “We’ve earned this, my love.”
Sam softened, and leaned in- kissed her once more, a little more firmly, uncaring for the way it smudged her perfect lipstick. When he pulled back, she flicked her fingertips, magicking away the makeup and fixing her own, and he just grinned at her.
“C’mon- let’s get married.”
