“Vi? You awake?”
1:19am. Vi was surely asleep.
“Hnn…”
Caitlyn sat up at the subtle response, waiting patiently for another hint that Vi was listening to her.
A light ruffle of sheets crackled through the phone line. Caitlyn remembered the smell of them vividly, pine and lavender.
How she missed sleeping next to Vi, feeling her soft breaths on her neck, listening to her breathing. It was the perfect sleep soundtrack for Caitlyn.
Vi knew this. It’s why she never hung up the phone. Why they fall asleep on the line together.
“Hhh.. ugh.”
Another rustle of sheets.
Caitlyn whispered, “You’re so cute. Keep sleeping, my love.”
Cailtyn traced Vi’s name on her phone screen.
“I miss you,” Caitlyn mumbled, not intending for Vi to hear.
“Hgn…. Mm! Miss you…”
Caitlyn fell asleep to Vi’s sleep talk.
