Sweep me off my feet

Summary:

In which Rex takes a hit from a grenade and Cody does his best to fix it

For Codex Week Day 1: tending wounds

Notes:

Hi hello welcome to Codex week

I had an awful lot of fun with these prompts and I promise some of them aren’t even angsty!

Work Text:

"ow."

Cody let out a sigh of relief, dropping to his knees beside where Rex was lying on the ground. "Is that all you have to say for yourself? 'Ow'?"

Rex grinned up at him, apparently unconcerned about the blood seeping through the gap between his spaulder and breastplate. "Bold words from the man who broke his foot spin-kicking a droideka last week."

"Taking a hit from a grenade is not the same thing, Rex'ika!" Cody replied, fumbling for the tiny medkit on his belt. "Not even close."

"No, it's-" Rex let out a sharp gasp as Cody shifted his arm slightly to get as the seals on his armour.

"Sorry, should have warned you," Cody murmured, trying to get a better look at the wound. It looked like a piece of shrapnel had wedged itself into Rex's shoulder - which was good in that it would keep Rex from bleeding out, but bad for just about everything else. "You were saying?"

"I was planning to point out that you had a choice not to use your blaster," Rex wheezed, closing his eyes as Cody pulled off his chestplate, "and that the bomb came too quickly…"

"But..?" Cody prompted, briefly checking Rex over for any other injuries before turning his attention back to his shoulder.

"Hm?" Rex asked, frowning. "But what?"

Cody swore under his breath, mentally adding 'possible concussion' to his list of injuries. "But you were going to tell me what a hero you were for kicking a live grenade out of the way?"

Rex chuckled, his eyes fluttering open again. "Did I look cool at least?"

"I don't know," Cody replied, tearing off a section of bandage to wrap Rex's shoulder with. "I was too busy covering your shebs to judge one way or another."

"Damn," Rex replied, wincing as Cody tied off the bandage. "What's the point of being a hero if my cyare isn't watching?"

"Not letting your squad get blown to smithereens, if I had to guess," Cody said, taking a quick look around them. Evac was still a ways out, and they'd need to move to somewhere with more cover in case the droids came back first. "Do you think you can walk?"

"Uh…" Rex frowned. "Is there another option?"

Cody glanced around again. Rex was heavy, but if he pushed it, they could get to the overhang on the far side of the canyon… and out of the direct line of fire of any incoming fighters. "I'll see what I can do. You bleeding from anywhere else I should know about?"

"That's a great question," Rex muttered, trying to push himself up on his good arm. "Everything hurts about the same."

"That's… not really reassuring," Cody said, glancing around again. "I'm going to check, okay?"

Rex nodded, letting himself fall back against the dirt again. "It's not like you haven't felt me up before."

Cody ran his hands down Rex's back and chest, checking to see if they came back bloody.

"That's- owwww," Rex groaned as Cody passed over his left side, "That's definitely worse."

"No playful punches to the ribs, got it," Cody said. There wasn't any blood, which meant there wasn't a whole lot he could do at the moment to fix it, so he added it to his mental list and moved on to checking over Rex's arms and legs. "I can work with that."

"Good, I'd-" Rex's breath caught in his throat as Cody shifted his injured arm over his chest. "I'd hate to be the one that… stumped Marshal Commander Cody."

"You've always been the better strategist between the two of us, cyare," Cody murmured, leaning down to kiss Rex's forehead now that he was satisfied his partner wasn't going to bleed out immediately. "I'm sure you could stump me any time you wanted to - with a concussion, even."

"Mm… not sure about that," Rex muttered. "Brain's getting mushy."

"You need to stay with me, okay?" Cody said, pressing another kiss into Rex's forehead. "We've got to get moving, and I need you sharp to watch my back."

"I'll do my best," Rex replied with a small smile. "Anything to be swept off my feet by my knight in plastoid armour."
