Chapter 1: The opportunity

Chapter Text

Quackity stumbled into his bedroom, have-consciously throwing off his tie before collapsing onto his untouched bed. It had been months since the death of Slime, and Quackity had spent most of his days either sobbing down a bottle of alcohol or rotting away at his desk.

Quackity huffed shakily, shoving his face into his pillow as he felt tears well up in his eyes. His nights always ended like this, crying and sweating as the memories of Slime drifted through his mind. Quackity’s world is constantly haunted by those warm and fuzzy eyes that once graced him with so much happiness. Slime was taken too soon by a fate he didn’t deserve.

“Quackity.” Said a calm and unexpected voice from the far-right corner of Quackity’s room, making him jump.

“W-who are you?” Quackity says in a breathless and shoken voice, staring up at the tall silhouette as he desperately wiped away his tears.

“My name is XD, though that does not matter.” The god paused, flipping the on light switch with a soft click.

“I have an opportunity for you, Quackity.”

——

Quackity gulped, running his hands through his messy hair. For the first time in the past month, Quackity felt something other than misery. “So, what exactly do you mean by a ‘version’ of him?”

“You are aware that there are multiple universes, no?” XD asked as they walked down the blinding white hallways XD had teleported them to.

“Well, it just so happens that I found a certain version of Slime without, and in need of, a Quackity,” XD smiled smugly, turning to Quackity.

“You- you found an alternative version of Slime? And…you want me to meet them?” Quackity studered, his words coming out more like a statement than a question.

XD nodded, stopping at a white, futuristic door before pausing, his tone more serious, “Quackity, before we leave,” he exhaled nervously, “this isn't the same Slime you knew. He is much different, and I want you to be prepared for what you might find.”

“Different how?” Quackity managed to ask, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt.

XD leaned forward slightly, wanting to give his statement more privacy, “This… version of him,” XD took a moment to gather his thoughts, “He is more broken. Traumatized.”

Quackity immediately felt his throat tighten. What does he mean traumatized? Who could hurt Slime? Slime, the literal embodiment of innocence and joy? Quackity’s hands clutched into fists at his side, face tightening into a glare.

“What happened to him?”

“I’m not entirely sure. But what I do know is that he has been abused and abandoned…that’s all I was told by Kristin.” He shrugged casually, as if the answer meant nothing to him.

XD gripped the golden doorknob, his lengthy white fingers wrapping around carelessly. “This Slime is in terrible shape. He was hysterical when he first got here,” He turned the knob, a soft click echoing between them.

“Brace yourself.”
