Chapter Text

The bell for class rang. First class at 7 in the morning, was this universe or hell?

But as haymitch Abernathy walked into his first period class he sat in the front, for being a person who tries to act dumb he is a exceptionally smart. And soon, as a lot more students filter in, he sees the obnoxious Effie trinket sitting next to him. They have met before, unwilling. They were forced to be partners on a project once but opted to ask to do separate projects even if it meant more work for both of them.

They were both some of the most high achieving people at this school so no wonder they both disliked eachother, they were quiet rivals, always one upping eachother in one way or another.

But as Effie sat down haymitch just rolled his eyes and took out his note book. And as did Effie

And thus the professor started

"Alright everyone, we have your final assignment for this semester. It's a group project. I will be creating your groups for you so we can all get this over with as fast as possible."

professor undersea joked.

And once all the papers were handed out haymitch and Effie realized they had been put together. Both there stomachs dropped, this was not going to happen under any condition.

After class they both went up to the professor.and Effie started.

"Please professor mags, we really don't do well as a team, me and"

A look of disdain and hate trickled across her face and she cleared her throat once more.

"Me and mr Abernathy."

She said it with such hate it could rival anyones. And so haymitch had to pipe up.

"For once I agree with trust fund over here."

She rolled her eyes at his comment

"I'm sorry but I've made my decision. You two have to learn to work with eachother, I'm sorry there is no if and or buts."

This was a political history class they needed it to graduate. They needed this class. So they needed to get along.

So they both left with a huff. Haymitch went to work and Effie went to the bar. And sadly enough for the both of them

"What are you stalking me at this point trinket."

Haymitch sighed as chaff glared at him.

"I didn't want to see you either Abernathy, it's bad enough we have to see eachother for this project. but I want a drink and your a bartender. So pour me a drink please."

Haymitch gritted his teeth at the fact he had to bow down to her cause of his job but he needed the money, a scholarship can only do so much.

"Fine. What can I get you?"

"Something fruity. Please."

"Right up."

And he made the drink. It was perfect much to Effie's displeasure.

After she was finished drinking she paid her tab and left, a couple hours later, a couple drunks and a couple assholes, his shift was over. And he left too. Haymitch checked his phone. Nothing too exciting, so he turned on his music and walked to the car park where his car was.

Once he got into his car he drove back to his dorm. Blaring his music he's been listening too since he was 14. Once he was laying in his bed he found out that he couldn't sleep. So what does any reasonable person do when they can't sleep. Go for a nightly run of course.

And so he did. But not in the college campus, haymitch wasn't that weird. Well okay he was but he also cared at least a little bit on self preservation. So he went to a park out in the outskirts of salt lake city. It was a nice little park at least haymitch thought so.

So he started running. He could feel his abdomen clench as it always did when he ran since the accident. When he spots a familiar golden haired girl walking through the park. And she spots him.

Being Effie she walked up to him.

"Now who's stalking who?"

"Ha ha ha, very funny princess."

Haymitch said his accent imminent.

"Listen, Abernathy I'm not excited to be with a country hic boy like you."

"And trust me trinket I'm not thrilled to be with a mean girl wanna be like you."

They glared for a minute, before haymitch rolled his eyes.

"Listen we're gonna have to work together for a few months, so why don't we at least be civil?"

"sigh i supposed it wouldn't be a bad idea Abernathy."

And with that they began walking, silently. Neither of them knew what to say. Neither of them liked being on the same page.

"You can also just call me haymitch. Abernathy is just my last name."

"I'm aware, but you always call me trinket, so I'm just returning the favor."

This girl knew how to get under his skin that's for sure.

"Fine. Princess it is then."

"You are impossible."

Haymitch scoffed at that. And the rest of the walk was in silence. Until they got to there cars.

"Here haymitch."

She handed haymitch a note on a crumpled up piece of paper

"And this would be?"

"My number numb skull. For the project. We should make plans soon so we can get this
done with faster."

And with that haymitch grumbled something under his breath.

"Hey haymitch?"

"What princess?"

He asked annoyed.

"I'm not excited about this, but be civil I hear it's hard for country hic's like you."

And with that she was off. Haymitch could feel his blood boil. He hated Effie mother fucking trinket.
