Katara had always been secure in her relationship with Azula—until now. The way Azula interacted with Mai and Ty Lee stirred something inside her. There was an intensity in their bond, a closeness that left Katara feeling oddly possessive. She couldn’t help but notice how easily the three of them shared inside jokes, how they communicated with just a glance or a quiet word, leaving her feeling a little like an outsider.
It was stupid, she knew. Azula loved her. But the more she saw the trio together, the more a flicker of jealousy ignited in her. Katara had never had a friendship like that with anyone. She didn’t know what it was like to have a bond so intense, so exclusive. It made her feel like an outsider, even though she and Azula had been inseparable for months. There was something about the way Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee shared quiet moments, their connection so effortlessly strong, that made her question her own place in Azula’s life.
Katara had just finished a long shift at the caldera hospital, her body tired but her mind racing. She didn’t expect to feel this way when she walked in, but when she saw them—Mai lounging on the couch, Ty Lee perched beside her, and Azula leaning casually against the wall—something inside her snapped.
The three of them were deep in conversation, laughing and teasing each other with a familiarity that cut through her like a sharp blade. She stood by the door for a moment, watching them, her thoughts spiraling. Then, without thinking, she walked over to Azula, her eyes fixed firmly on hers.
Azula looked up at her, a playful glint in her eyes.
“Hey love, you’re back!”
She walked over to Azula, her eyes fixed firmly on hers. Without a word, she leaned in and kissed her, fiercely and without hesitation. Azula was momentarily caught off guard, but the moment her lips met Katara's, the tension between them seemed to melt away.
But Katara didn’t look at Azula—she didn’t break her gaze from Mai and Ty Lee, who were watching the scene unfold with a mix of surprise and amusement. Katara kissed Azula harder, daring them to make a comment, her eyes locked onto theirs with a quiet challenge.
Ty Lee stifled a laugh, her grin wide and playful, while Mai just raised an eyebrow, her expression unreadable but clearly entertained by Katara’s sudden show of boldness.
Katara’s heart pounded as she held the kiss, the pressure of the situation only pushing her to deepen it. She wasn’t sure if she was trying to prove something to Azula’s friends or to herself, but she wasn’t about to pull away now. She let the kiss stretch on, her mind a swirl of emotions, refusing to break the moment, even as the tension in the room thickened.
Finally, they parted, breathless.
Azula’s lips curled into a confident smirk, her usual composure unshaken.
“Wow, did I miss you that much?” she teased, her voice low and laced with amusement.
Katara didn’t answer immediately. Instead, her gaze remained locked on Mai and Ty Lee, daring them to speak, daring them to challenge her. She wasn’t sure what she was proving—maybe it was to herself, maybe it was something else—but she wasn’t about to back down now.
Ty Lee’s eyes twinkled with amusement as she leaned toward Mai.
“This is getting interesting,” she whispered, barely containing a laugh.
Mai simply smirked, her expression unreadable.
“Seems like someone’s got a bit of a fire under her,” she muttered.
Katara kept her eyes on them, not flinching as she held Azula’s gaze. The kiss had made her heart race, but it wasn’t just about the kiss—it was about proving that her place in Azula’s life was secure, no matter what.
Katara’s mind was a swirl of confusion and guilt as she walked beside Azula. The jealousy she had felt earlier was still gnawing at her, the weight of it dragging her down. She couldn’t shake the feeling of being foolish, of letting her insecurities get the better of her.
Azula seemed to sense the shift in Katara’s energy, her teasing smile fading into something softer, more understanding. Without a word, she reached for Katara’s hand, her touch gentle and deliberate, as if wanting to reassure her without saying a thing. She cupped Katara’s hand in her own, her thumb lightly grazing the delicate skin of her palm, offering a silent comfort.
“Come on,” Azula murmured, her voice warm, the playfulness still there but tempered with care. “See you girls.”
Katara nodded, though she couldn’t quiet the storm in her chest. Her emotions were overwhelming, and she wasn’t sure if she was overreacting. Was she really letting jealousy take control?
“Don’t be late for training tomorrow!” said Ty Lee.
“Like I’ve ever been late!” mumbled Azula.
They walked in silence for a while, the quiet between them thick with unspoken words. Azula kept her hand in Katara’s, but the contact did little to ease the unease stirring in Katara’s chest. It wasn’t like her to act this way. To feel petty, childish even. She had always prided herself on being strong, on trusting those she loved. Yet here she was, consumed by jealousy.
Before she could voice any of the doubts clouding her thoughts, Azula stopped in the hallway, pulling her into a quiet corner, hidden from the others. In an instant, Azula’s hands were on Katara’s hips, pressing her gently yet firmly against the wall.
Katara’s breath caught in her throat, her heart skipping a beat. The tension inside her body vanished at the sensation of Azula so close—so intimately near. The guilt, the insecurity, all seemed to melt away in an instant, replaced by the heat of Azula’s proximity.
Azula leaned in, her lips grazing Katara’s ear as she whispered, her voice soft but unwavering.
“You know that I love you, right?”
Katara froze for a moment, the weight of Azula’s words sinking in. Her heartbeat slowed, the raw affection in Azula’s voice sweeping away the doubts that had haunted her.
She closed her eyes, letting herself fall into the moment, feeling the pulse of their closeness.
“I... I know,” Katara murmured, her voice softer now, the jealousy and uncertainty slipping away as she leaned into Azula’s steady touch.
Azula’s lips curled into a gentle smile, her thumb brushing Katara’s cheek in a tender gesture.
“Good,” she said, pressing a soft kiss to Katara’s forehead. “Because nothing—not Mai, not Ty Lee, nothing—will ever change that.”
Azula pressed a soft kiss to Katara’s forehead, her fingers slipping down to lace with hers. Katara’s heart fluttered at the tenderness, the affection in the way Azula held her, as if she were the most important thing in the world.
Katara smiled, a soft laugh escaping her. “You always know how to make everything feel right.”
Azula gave her a playful look, her usual fire twinkling in her eyes.
“I’m just getting started,” she teased. “You haven’t seen me in full ‘I’m madly in love with you’ mode yet.”
Katara’s eyes sparkled with affection as she pulled Azula closer, wrapping her arms around her waist.
“I think I’d like to see that,” she said with a grin.
Azula laughed softly, her hands resting on Katara’s back as she leaned in for another kiss—gentle but lingering, a promise in every touch. When they pulled away, Azula’s voice was low, filled with affection.
“Whatever happens,” Azula whispered, “you and me? Always.”
Katara smiled, her heart light, her doubts gone, knowing that no matter what, they were stronger together.
They finally walked side by side again, the earlier tension between them forgotten. Azula’s fingers gently brushed against Katara’s, the warmth of her touch grounding Katara in the present moment. As they walked, Katara couldn’t help but feel a lightness in her chest, the weight of jealousy from earlier slipping away with every step.
Just then, a maid appeared ahead of them, adjusting a cart of fresh linens. Her eyes immediately locked onto Azula, and Katara noticed the subtle way her posture changed—standing just a little straighter, her smile just a little wider.
“Your Highness,” the maid said with a flirtatious tone, “Can I do anything for you today? Anything at all?”
Azula glanced at Katara, her lips curling into an amused smirk, before she turned her attention back to the maid. “I’m fine, thank you,” she said smoothly, her voice like velvet.
But the maid didn’t seem to take the hint.
“Oh, but you’re glowing today, Your Highness,” she said, taking a step closer, eyes twinkling. “Maybe I can fetch you something... Or perhaps... a little company?”
Katara immediately felt her eyebrows knit together. Was she really flirting that blatantly in front of her?
Azula raised an eyebrow, clearly entertained.
"I appreciate the offer," Azula said smoothly, her tone effortlessly cool. "But I think I’m good for now."
The maid bowed politely before retreating, though not without a lingering glance.
Katara scoffed, crossing her arms as she watched the exchange unfold.
“Seriously? Appreciate the offer? ” she muttered, loud enough for Azula to hear.
Azula turned to her, lips twitching in amusement.
“What’s the matter, Katara?” she teased, her golden eyes glinting with mischief. “Jealous?”
Katara’s eyes narrowed as she huffed, spinning on her heel. “You’re sleeping on the couch tonight.”
“What?” Azula’s smirk vanished as she hurried after her. “Katara, come on—I was joking! Hey, wait!”
But Katara was already storming down the corridor, leaving Azula to chase after her, half-laughing, half-panicking.
