Chapter Text
The speckle of sunlight flickered through the windows, allowing the patients in the room to admire the sunrise sky. A blend of warm colours, fading into each other into a comforting pallete, something rare after the recent events. Despite the beautiful sunrise, destruction could still be observed in the distance, a haunting reminder of what took place.
Once Katsuki was finally well enough to move (to which he won't admit, his mom had helped him walk), he entered Izuku's room in the blink of an eye and didn't leave since then, despite the nurses' gentle yet insisting comments for him to return to his own room.
He had heard it multiple times, ”Mister Bakugou, with all due respect, we must ask you to return to your room. Mister Midoriya is still in a fragile state.”
But he didn't budge. No,he refused to budge. He wasn't planning on leaving the nerd's side. Not when his face was still pale, not when his heartbeat was irregular, not when he still wasn't awake and conscious.
He doesn't care much about his condition at the moment. He knows he's pretty fucked up, too— the unability to use his right arm has sent him spiralling, kept him cooped up in his own mind. He isn't sure if he's ever gonna get over this, given what the Doctors had told him about the injuries he sustained.
He holds Izuku a little tighter to himself, snuggling into the other's side. It made sense, since this bed was only for one person. He listened to the way Izuku breathed,in and out at a slow pace, with his heartbeat guiding a hum that uncharacteristically ripped out of Katsuki.
His voice was hoarse, but the hum was slow, soft and almost quiet. He relished this moment, basking in the other's warmth while he could. Memories with Izuku flood his mind, and he lets himself drown in them.
He remembers when Izuku outright called him a jerk in their first year of highschool (although politely) then proceeded to tell him he's amazing and list some of Katsuki's qualities. He remembers what Izuku told to him when they had fought, and Aizawa Sensei had caught them, ”All Might was my Hero but you were the one actually in my life!”. At the time, Katsuki refused to overthink over those words, but now, they were words which often encouraged him to keep going. He remembers the way Izuku's eyes widened in pure shock when he had apologized. A rain droplet had fell directly on one of Izuku's freckles that time.
Katsuki remembers, and the memories he had created with Izuku bring him a sense of serenity as he continues to hum quietly to himself and Izuku, who still hasn't decided to wake up yet.
The song he's humming is one his mother used to hum to him when he was a baby, and up to 7 years old. Katsuki remembers it clearly, the melody remaining a balm to his ears whenever times got tough. His mother, due to how Katsuki had angrily snapped at her to stop, that it was for 'babies', she had actually stopped.
Katsuki has added yet another regret to his list.
The song originates deep within his throat with a gentle-like thrill, his eyes still scanning Izuku's features. The scar on his cheek (which, everytime Katsuki sees it,he wants to rip his hair out) is so aggravating— hiding all 4 'principal' freckles there. Bigger than the hundreds of others and beautiful nonetheless, now a fleeting memory and most likely, forever lost.
Katsuki knows he shouldn't grieve for such thing. He knows Izuku had numerous freckles all over his body, or at least he used to as a kid. He can't help but wonder if Izuku, despite the scars littering his body, still has freckles embedded into his very being, a beautiful mark only adding to Izuku's demeanour.
He can't help but smile at the thought, gaining the courage to hum the song a little louder than before. The warm radiating from both his and Izuku's body anchors him to the reality and the beauty of this moment, to which he's aware is temporary, but he wants to enjoy it for as long as he's able to.
Katsuki knows that when Izuku will peek those pretty eyes open, return to consciousness and finally wake up from his much-needed slumber, things will change. Things will be better, he practically feels it within his skin, prickling with anticipation like intensity. Until then, Katsuki vows to wait patiently by his side, play with those viridian green curls to pass the time and hum that song once again,
Cause nothing's better than waiting now, and potentially interacting with a conscious Izuku later.
