Work Text:
Today was really not the day for someone to decide to drive around the city with a dirty bomb. Lucy can already feel the headache forming and is exhausted. She has taken over as Watch Commander for Wade who is now Lieutenant. Tim is now the Lieutenant in Metro.
A knock on her door has her looking to see Angela and Nyla. “Hey, what did you find out?” Lucy needs to know where to go next and hope they could find something to help.
Angela starts speaking first. “This could be tied to a group that the ATF has been tracking. It looks like they started small with weapons, but have grown into so much more, obviously.”
“Have you reached out to the person in charge of the case?” Lucy wonders.
Nyla steps forward. “Yes we talked to Grey who spoke to whoever the boss and they are on their way here now. We need to solve this sooner rather than later.”
Lucy nods. “I agree. I’ll gather as many officers as I can so we can be prepared to help however we can.” The two walk out and she knows that Grey will come find her once their contact has arrived. It doesn’t take long before Lucy sees the last person she expected to see again. Her stomach starts churning and she takes a deep breath. Lucy walks into the roll call room. “It looks like everyone’s here.” She looks at their ATF contact. “Talia.”
“Lucy Chen, wow. You’ve made a name for yourself.” She wants to roll her eyes but decides against it.
Instead, she plasters a smile on her face. “I’ve worked hard to get where I am, yes. Now, let’s get to work.”
“Are you in charge now?” Talia hasn’t paid much attention to her uniform apparently.
“I’m now Watch Commander. This is my station.” She stands at the front of the room. “Listen up everyone. We have a bomb running around this city. It’s all hands on deck. I’m going to hand this over to our contact at the ATF. Some of you may remember her, Talia Bishop.”
“Thank you Sergeant Chen.” Lucy doesn’t like her tone, but she just shrugs it off. Lucy always kept her distance after what Talia said to her about Nolan. What no one else knows was right before she left the LAPD, she decided to give Lucy another lecture. It seemed to be her parting gift. Lucy told her off, but it still pisses her off. It wasn’t anything nice and it has always been sitting in the back of her head. Lucy finally did tell Tim and he was angry about what was said to Lucy. As always, he’s been her biggest supporter and she couldn’t imagine her life without him. Talia explains what is happening to the room. Once she’s done, Lucy takes charge again.
“Now that you know what is going on, we will break into teams. Nolan, you’ll take Celina out with you and your rookie. We are waiting on the rest of the Metro team to come back, but they will be looped in soon. Lieutenant Pine has been kind enough to offer their assistance. They are finishing up a raid and should be back shortly. These are dangerous people so be safe out there. If you see anything, you call it in right away.”
The team's head out and Pine smiles at Lucy. “Bradford would be very proud.” Talia raises her eyebrows when she hears that.
“I am his prodigy.” The two women laugh. Just thirty minutes later, Metro walks in. Tim smiles seeing Lucy but it quickly turns to a frown when he sees Talia in the room. Angela and Nyla are out on the streets as well with Aaron tagging along with them.
“Wow I never thought that I would see Tim Bradford leave patrol. Didn’t you say that’s where all the fun was?” Talia seems surprised.
Tim crosses his arms and Lucy licks her lips. “Things change and life goes on. Some things matter more. It’s good to see you doing well. How about you catch me up and we catch the son of a bitch who’s responsible for this?”
Lucy and Talia start to brief him. “We really need to get these idiots off the streets. This could turn out badly.”
“Why don’t we head out together and see what we can find?” Talia looks at both Tim and Lucy.
Lucy has a tight smile on her face. “Let me check a few things and then we will head out. I can count on you two to get the shop ready, right?” She thinks about what happened her rookie year and tries not to laugh.
Tim’s lips start to curl upward when Talia speaks. “I think we can handle it. We’re not rookies.”
“Yet, you’ve been gone from the LAPD for years and I’m now a Sergeant who deserves respect. You can’t seem to get that through your head.” Lucy quips back, surprising them both.
“Okay, we will handle getting things ready.” Talia goes to walk away and Tim waves her off to let her know he’d be right there. “Are you going to be okay to do this?”
“I’m fine, Tim. She is the same judgmental person she always has been. Just wait until she finds out about us. I’m sure she’ll have something to say.”
Tim is worried about his wife and she pulls back when he goes to grab her hand. “Let me use the bathroom. I’ll be right there.”
He’s not happy, but goes to make sure the shop is ready. “Where’s Chen?” Talia says snippy.
“She’ll be right out. She’s worked her ass off to get where she is. You do need to show her respect. You left the LAPD and went to the ATF. I don’t know what your issue is, but you need to leave her alone.”
Talia is surprised by Tim’s outburst, but before she can respond, Lucy meets them outside. The three of them head out, with Talia in the back seat. Tim wants to reassure Lucy and grab her hand, but he can’t.
The day can’t seem to end fast enough. Talia is fairly quiet, but he heard one or two snippy comments from her. It pisses him off, mainly because it’s directed at Lucy. She is his main priority. Within four hours, they arrest the suspects and are headed back to the station.
Lucy goes to her office to start the paperwork. Talia takes one of the empty desks to do her own while Tim heads to his office. Lucy finds a moment to go find her husband. “Hey.” Lucy is standing in his doorway and she looks tired.
“Hey.” Tim stands up and she meets him halfway. He opens his arms and Lucy easily goes.
“I hate how today went.” She feels Tim’s lips on the top of her head. His door is halfway open at this point.
“Me too. I’m sorry that she came back and didn’t seem to get over everything from when she worked here. You are amazing and everyone loves you. I hate that you’re on the receiving end of it all.”
Lucy doesn’t say anything, she just relaxes in his arms. “I just needed five minutes before trying to finish my paperwork. You always help me relax.” Tim smirks and pulls her in for a kiss. Neither of them see Talia staring at them in the hallway.
“Well I always worry about you, especially now.” His hand gravitates to her belly. The uniform tends to hide it, but she’s now sixteen weeks pregnant with their first baby, a little girl.
“I know you do. I was waiting for more lectures. I won’t hold back with her if she does start.” Tim pulls her in for another kiss.
“Have you been sick a lot today?” Tim asks before she leaves.
“A little bit. I hate that I still get so nauseous, but it’s a part of pregnancy. The end result is worth it.” Lucy murmurs.
Tim hates seeing her feel sick. “It is, but I want to take care of you.”
Lucy smiles. “You always do. Right now, let’s finish our paperwork and then you can take me home to massage my back.”
“Mmm, that sounds perfect.” Tim kisses her once more. Lucy goes to her office and settles to finish her paperwork. An hour later, Talia is knocking on her door. “All finished with your paperwork?”
Talia nods and hands her the paperwork. “You really didn’t take any of my advice or listen to what I told you, now did you?”
Lucy pushes her chair so loud that people look on. “Your advice was unsolicited. You know nothing about my life. I’ve moved up in this department on my own merit, even though I’m married to Tim!” Talia’s eyes go wide at Lucy’s admission. “Yes, we are married. I have worked my ass off to get here. You left and thought you could tell me how to live my life. Just because things didn’t work for you, doesn’t mean that it’s like that for everyone. I have the respect of every officer at this station. The chief respects me enough to have her on a special committee that she created because of my ideas. So I would shut your mouth and not start with me.” Lucy is seething.
Suddenly Tim and Grey are standing at the door. “Is everything okay?”
“Agent Bishop was just leaving. The paperwork is finished.” Tim walks over and wraps his arm around her protectively.
“I can’t believe you’re okay with this.” Talia blurts out and Grey shakes her head.
“How about you go now? You’ve done nothing but stress my pregnant wife out and upset the officers in this station.” Talia is shocked once again and sees everyone staring. “I’m going now. It was good working with you.”
She hurries off. “Go home. You’ve earned it.” Angela and Nyla are chuckling to themselves after seeing Talia leave with her tail between her legs.
Tim waits for Lucy to change out. They go home and Tim does as promised. Lucy is tense from the day and he’s always there to help. “I’m sorry you had to hear comments from her.”
Lucy leans into him. “It doesn’t affect me as much as it once did, but she will not come after us. Our relationship doesn’t affect our jobs and she knows nothing about us.”
“She had no right to judge then or now.” Tim kisses the top of her head.
“She won’t mess with a hormonal pregnant woman again though.”
Tim laughs and falls more in love with this woman. “Not if she has half a brain.” He really does love her more than anything in this entire world.
