Work Text:

INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY

This is a desolate warehouse, with visible dust marks and chaotic footprints scattered across the floor. Against the wall lies a broken chair, shattered from an impact. Pieces of fabric are strewn across the ground, and there is a dried pool of blood.

DANNY lies unconscious on the floor. The wound on the back of his head has stopped bleeding. He’s in uniform, with his tie still on and his Hawaii Five-0 badge clipped to his waist, but his gun is now held by a Latina woman in plain clothes. This is GRACE.

She shakes Danny’s shoulder.

GRACE
Danny, wake up. Come on, wake up.

DANNY groans in pain as his eyes slowly open. His face shows disbelief as he recognizes her.

DANNY
Grace! Is that really you? Grace? You... you were dead! So, am I dead too?

Grace smiles.

GRACE
It’s me, Danny. You’re still alive... for now.

DANNY
But I saw you get shot... (pauses)What do you mean, ‘for now’?

GRACE
The drug dealer who hurt you. Do you know who he is?

(FLASHBACK) INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY

Danny’s hands are tied to a chair with cloth. His gun is thrown on the floor. A male drug dealer, whose face is not visible, holds a gun and interrogates him.

DRUG DEALER
Tell me! What do you cops know?!

Danny doesn’t respond. He takes a heavy punch to the abdomen from the dealer.

The dealer continues questioning him, but Danny remains silent. The dealer lands another punch to his abdomen and then another, until the sound of sirens is heard from outside. The dealer gets distracted, and Danny struggles to his feet, crashing the chair into the wall to break free. Danny knocks the dealer’s gun to the floor and they engage in close combat.

INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY

DANNY
Marco Reyes. He’s a major figure in the Colombian drug cartel. We got word that he came to Hawaii. We’ve been keeping him under surveillance since he landed, but even now, we have no idea why he’s here.

GRACE
18.5 million dollars.

DANNY
What?

GRACE
The guy who was laundering money for him ran off with a large sum, and Reyes came to the island to track him down.

DANNY
How do you know that? For thirteen years, I thought you were dead. But the truth is, you’re not dead. You’re alive and well. Why didn’t you tell me you were still alive?

GRACE
This is complicated, Danny. I can't say more yet.

DANNY
Ha, I get it. Fake death, undercover operation, standard procedure. So, where’s our drug dealer now? What about those sirens? Where is everyone else?

GRACE
By the time I got here, Reyes had already escaped. And the siren was just a passing fire truck. No backup. (hands him the gun) There’s no one else, Danny. Just you and me.

EXT. ON THE ROAD - DANNY’s CAR - DAY
Danny is driving with one hand on the wheel, holding the phone with the other. Grace is sitting in the passenger seat.

DANNY
Steve, I’m fine, okay? Just wasn’t the best time to take a call. Yeah, we’re exposed. I’m on Reyes’ trail now. No, you don’t need to come. I know where he’s going. I’ll send you the location. We’ll meet at the end.

Danny hangs up.

GRACE
Tell me about him. Your partner.

DANNY
Steve’s an asshole, control freak, arrogant, acts without thinking... I hate him. You know what? He’s a lot like you.

Grace laughs.

GRACE
How’s that?

DANNY
He loves to take control of my car, like you. I could talk about his flaws for three days straight, but he’s a good guy, a pain in the ass friend. I’ll fight to keep him from dying on me. I don’t want him to die. (pauses) I don’t want you to die either, Grace.

GRACE
Let’s change the subject. Tell me about Grace, your daughter. You named her after me.

DANNY
I love her. From the moment she was born, she’s been my angel. God, you should see her. Who could have guessed she’s already a 13-year-old girl? Time flies, Grace. The borrowed time... If it weren’t for you, I should’ve died back there.

GRACE
She’s still in school. Are you picking her up after school?

DANNY
Oh, damn, I almost forgot. Her mom and her stepdad are on a business trip. After we catch Reyes, we should still make it before school ends. We have time.

GRACE
No, Danny. Time is running out.

Danny starts to feel uneasy.

DANNY
What’s wrong, Grace? If I can’t make it, I’ll have Matty pick her up. Grace loves playing with her uncle.

GRACE
Danny, you have to make a choice. Will you come with me, or go on alone?

DANNY
What are you talking about? I can’t understand.

Grace leans forward and touches Danny’s abdomen.

GRACE
(softly)You’ve been shot, Danny.

---

(FLASHBACK) INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY
Danny is fighting the drug dealer. The dealer picks up the gun and shoots at him. The bullet hits Danny in the abdomen.

EXT. ON THE ROAD - DANNY’s CAR - DAY
DANNY
So why—why am I... I’m dead, aren’t I?

GRACE
No, not yet. But maybe soon.

DANNY
So you’re just a figment of my imagination, and all of this is just a dream while I’m unconscious?

GRACE
I’m dead, Danny. Matty’s dead too. Reyes killed him. You and your family buried him. The drug dealer you’re after is not Reyes.

DANNY
Oh—oh, I remember everything now. The bullet I dodged all those years ago still hit me. Same drug dealer chase, same warehouse. I survived back then, but you didn’t. And now, I’m going to die.

GRACE
Not now, Danny. Not yet. You haven’t seen your daughter grow up. She needs you as her father. Steve needs you as his partner.

DANNY
Yeah, yeah... I can’t die yet, Grace. They need me alive.

Grace smiles.

GRACE
Keep going, Danny. You still have time.

Grace gets out of the car.

GRACE
Goodbye, Danny.

Danny watches Grace’s figure fade in the rearview mirror, the scenery behind him blurring. He hears the sirens, and then the voices of his daughter and partner calling his name. He continues driving forward.
