Work Text:

Detective Sailub had been chasing "The Phantom" for what felt like an eternity. Months of tireless work, countless hours of poring over evidence, and endless nights of stakeouts had yielded nothing but a string of victims and a trail of dead ends. The killer always seemed to be one step ahead, leaving behind no clues, DNA, or witnesses. It was as if they were a ghost, a phantom haunting the streets, striking fear into the hearts of the citizens.

Just when Sailub thought he was at his wit's end, a new partner was assigned to the case. Pon was his name—quiet, soft-spoken, with piercing dark brown eyes that seemed to see right through him. There was something about Pon that unsettled Sailub, a lurking mystery, but Sailub chalked it up to paranoia. After all, they were partners now. They had to focus on the task at hand—catching the elusive Phantom.

“Another dead end,” Sailub muttered as he dropped the stack of papers on the desk, running a hand through his hair.

Pon, who had been leaning against the doorframe, watching Sailub in silence, raised an eyebrow. “You’re not giving up, are you?”

Sailub sighed and leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples. “Feels like it’s never going to end. The Phantom’s always one step ahead. No clues, no pattern. It’s like he’s…vanishing.”

Pon pushed off the doorframe, walking toward the desk. He stood over the papers, looking at them with the same intense concentration Sailub had grown used to. “Maybe you’re not looking at it the right way,” Pon said softly. “Sometimes, the key is in the details that don’t fit the pattern. The things that seem out of place. You need to focus on the gaps, not just the answers.”

Sailub stared at him, his frustration flickering for a moment before he nodded. "You make it sound so simple."

Pon gave a small smile, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "It’s not but you’re not alone in this anymore."

There was a quiet intensity in Pon’s words that made Sailub’s heart skip a beat. He quickly shook the thought away. They were partners. Just partners. Nothing more.

As they continued to delve deeper into the case, Sailub found himself growing more comfortable around Pon. They worked together seamlessly, their partnership blossoming into a beautiful friendship. Late-night stakeouts turned into shared laughter, and long days at the office became punctuated with moments of connection that Sailub couldn’t help but look forward to.

One night, after a particularly grueling session of poring over evidence, Sailub found himself alone in the dimly lit break room, sipping on stale coffee. Pon walked in, leaning against the doorframe, watching him with a strange smile.

“You’re not still brooding over the case, are you?” Pon asked, his voice teasing.

Sailub glanced up, surprised by how warm Pon’s gaze felt. “You sound like you know me too well.”

“I’m learning,” Pon said, his eyes glinting. “And I’m also learning that you’re not the type to give up on something until you’ve figured it out. No matter how many dead ends there are.”

Sailub chuckled, though there was a hint of weariness to it. “Sometimes I wonder if we’re chasing a ghost. Maybe this whole case is just one big wild goose chase.”

Pon took a step forward, and for a moment, the air seemed to thrum with tension. “Again, you’re not alone in this,” he repeated, his voice softer this time, as if to emphasize it.

Sailub’s heart raced in a way that had nothing to do with the case. He met Pon’s gaze, and for the first time, he noticed the warmth, the subtle depth in those dark eyes. Something stirred inside him, but he quickly brushed it off. He was falling for his partner. That couldn’t happen. They couldn’t risk it.

Pon must have sensed his hesitation because his smile faltered just slightly. "Hey," Pon said gently, his voice dropping an octave, "don’t worry so much. You’re not in this alone. Not now. Not ever."

Sailub tried to ignore the sudden tightness in his chest. He forced a laugh, trying to lighten the mood. “Don’t go getting all sentimental on me now. We’ve still got a job to do.”

But as Pon closed the distance between them, his presence felt magnetic, like an invisible force pulling them closer. “Just…don’t push me away, Sailub. We’re partners, right?”

There was something more in Pon’s eyes, something that made Sailub’s breath hitch. "Yeah," Sailub replied, a little too quickly. "Partners."

But the word felt hollow, even though he wanted to believe it. The truth was, every time Pon touched his shoulder, every time their fingers brushed during a shared task, Sailub felt a spark he couldn’t ignore.

The next few weeks felt like a slow-burning fire between them. The case had taken a backseat to their growing closeness, their stolen glances and late-night conversations, each moment amplifying their unspoken feelings. Pon was always there, always present, and Sailub found himself more and more captivated by him.

One evening, after another successful break in the case, they found themselves alone in the office, a strange silence hanging between them.

Sailub finally broke the quiet, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think we’re getting closer to the Phantom."

Pon nodded, his gaze steady. “I know. But Sailub…” He paused, looking at him in a way that made Sailub’s heart race. “There’s something else I need to say.”

Sailub’s pulse quickened, not from the case this time, but from the weight of Pon’s words. He met his partner’s gaze, his breath catching in his throat. “What is it?”

Pon’s voice dropped to a near whisper. “I think I’m falling for you and I’m pretty sure you feel the same.”

Sailub’s heart stopped for a moment. Every instinct told him to pull away, to keep his distance—to stay professional but in Pon’s eyes, he saw something real, something raw that matched the feelings that had been building inside him.

“I…I do,” Sailub confessed, his voice trembling. “I didn’t expect this, didn’t think it would happen, but I feel it too. I just…I don’t know how to deal with it.”

Pon smiled softly, the warmth in his eyes undeniable. “You don’t have to. We’ll figure it out together. Whatever happens.”

Sailub swallowed, his heart pounding in his chest. The truth hung between them, unspoken but undeniable. Amid the chaos of their investigation, while hunting the Phantom, Sailub had found something—someone—that made him feel alive in a way he hadn’t expected.

But one night, Sailub’s world was about to come crashing down. He had finally gotten a break in the case—an anonymous tip that led him to a dark alley on the outskirts of town. The air was thick with the stench of blood, his heart pounding in anticipation. He had been sure that he was finally going to catch the Phantom—that the nightmare was coming to an end.

As he stepped into the alley, his eyes adjusting to the dim light, he saw it. A body lay in a pool of blood, and standing over the corpse, drenched in red, was Pon. A smirk danced on his lips, and his green eyes gleamed with something far too sinister.

"You finally caught me," Pon said, his voice low, dripping with dark satisfaction. His fingers flexed, blood smearing across his palm as he stared at Sailub with unblinking intensity.

Sailub's pulse raced. His mind couldn’t make sense of it. Pon, his partner, his lover—was the Phantom. The very killer he had been chasing for months, the monster who had taken so many lives, was the man he had fallen in love with.

"No," Sailub whispered, voice cracking. "It can't be. You’re...you’re my partner. My lover."

Pon’s smirk only widened. He tilted his head, the blood on his face like a mask, making him appear more like a demon than a man. "You're so blind, Sailub. Always did think the best of me, didn’t you? I was never your partner. I was always the Phantom, hiding in plain sight. You were just too naïve to see it."

A sickening realization twisted in Sailub's gut. Betrayal, grief, and rage surged through him all at once. "Why?" he choked out, his voice raw. "Why did you do it? All those people…"

Pon’s cold eyes held Sailub's, and he shrugged, a nonchalant smile never leaving his face. "I did it because I could. I did it because it was fun and because I wanted to see how long it would take you to figure it out. I wanted to see how long I could keep you fooled." He stepped toward Sailub, his blood-splattered form looming larger, his voice lowering to a whisper. "I wanted you to catch me, Sailub. To make it a game…but now…now that you’ve caught me, what will you do?"

Something inside Sailub snapped. He had trusted this man—loved him—and Pon had used that trust to weave a web of deception. His heart burned with fury and betrayal. Sailub drew his gun, pointing it steadily at Pon.

"You're under arrest," Sailub said, voice trembling but firm. "For the murders. For everything."

Pon raised an eyebrow, the smirk still etched on his face. "Is that so?" he asked, amusement creeping into his voice. "Do you think a gun can stop me?"

Before Sailub could react, Pon lunged at him with terrifying speed. Sailub barely had time to dodge, stumbling backward as Pon’s bloodied hands reached for his throat. The detective’s training kicked in, and he managed to shove Pon off, but not without feeling the cold fingers of Pon’s grip tighten around his wrist, twisting his arm in a brutal move.

Pain shot through Sailub’s body as he struggled to break free, but Pon’s strength was unnerving, almost inhuman. Sailub fought with all he had, desperate to subdue his former lover. He swung his elbow back, connecting with Pon’s jaw, but Pon’s smirk only grew, as if he enjoyed the struggle. With one swift movement, Pon kicked Sailub’s legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the ground.

Sailub struggled to breathe, his heart racing as Pon crouched above him, their faces inches apart. "You’ve always been so predictable, Sailub," Pon taunted, his voice low and cruel. "You’ll never stop me."

But Sailub wasn’t ready to give up. With one final burst of energy, he grabbed Pon by the wrist, flipping them both onto the ground. The gun he had dropped earlier lay inches from his hand. He snatched it up, aiming it at Pon once again, his voice harsh and commanding.

"Enough!" Sailub yelled every ounce of his strength concentrated on keeping Pon in place. "You’re done."

Pon’s eyes flashed with something—a strange mix of respect and disappointment. "You think this is over?" he asked, his voice almost…fond. "You think locking me up will make a difference?"

Sailub’s hands shook, but he didn’t waver. "You’re going to pay for what you’ve done."

With that, he slapped the handcuffs on Pon’s wrists, pulling him to his feet with a force that seemed almost mechanical. The dark alley around them felt suffocating, closing in with every step as Sailub led Pon away.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Sailub’s world had shattered. His heart, once filled with love, now only carried a profound sense of betrayal and disbelief. He had trusted Pon, loved him, and the man he had fallen for was a murderer.

Pon’s eyes never left Sailub’s face, that same twisted smirk still on his lips. "You were always a good detective, Sailub," Pon said softly, his voice almost affectionate. "But you were never good enough to catch me sooner."

Sailub didn’t respond. He couldn’t. The weight of the truth pressed on him like a thousand pounds. The Phantom was finally behind bars, but the real horror lay in the knowledge that the man who had stolen his heart was nothing more than a monster.

Pon took a step closer, his gaze dark and full of contempt. "You were weak because you loved too much, Sailub," he continued, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "You couldn’t see what was right in front of you. Your heart made you blind."

Sailub’s blood ran cold at the words. His mind raced, his thoughts a jumbled mess of confusion and anger. Pon’s twisted satisfaction was palpable as if the entire game had been a cruel experiment in manipulating his emotions.

"You think this is a game?" Sailub’s voice cracked with emotion, but he steadied himself, forcing the words out. "Did you ever love me?”

Pon’s smirk widened, but there was no answer. No apology. Just cold, calculated indifference. "A psychopath like me would never love and would only kill," he said, shrugging as if Sailub’s pain meant nothing to him. "Again, because it was fun."

As they walked through the alley, the lights of the city casting long shadows, Sailub realized something. The darkness in Pon had been there all along. Sailub had been blind to it—blinded by love, blinded by trust. And now, he would have to live with the consequences.

The Phantom was caught, but Sailub knew that the real nightmare was just beginning. He would never be the same again.
