Chapter 1: Race

Chapter Text

The sun hung high in the sky, casting warm golden light over the rolling hills outside of Green Hill Zone. A gentle breeze rustled the grass, carrying the distant sound of crashing waves from the sea below.

It was the perfect day for a race.

Sonic stood on the edge of a dirt path with a fist resting on his hip, a confident smirk tugging at his lips. “You sure about this, Blaze? I mean, I don’t wanna embarrass you or anything.”

Blaze, standing just a few feet away from the hedgehog, scoffed while her tail flicked behind her. “You’re awfully smug for someone who barely outran me last time.”

Sonic let out a chuckle, stretching his legs as he leaned forward. “Barely? C’moooon, I literally left you in the dust!”

Blaze rolled her eyes. “We’ll see about that.” A small spark of flame flickered at her fingertips before vanishing.

Sonic tapped his foot seventy-six times against the ground in a second, itching to start. “Alright, first one to the flower field past those hills wins. No shortcuts, no tricks, just pure speed.”

Blaze nodded, her violet eyes narrowing as she crouched slightly. “Fine by me.”

For a moment, everything was still. The world around them seemed to fade away as they focused entirely on the path ahead.

“Ready…” Sonic started as Blaze dug her heels into the dirt.

The wind stilled.

“GO!”

With a boom, they were off, a blur of blue and violet streaking across the landscape. The ground trembled beneath them as their feet barely touched the earth.

Sonic shot ahead first, his natural speed giving him an early lead, but when he glanced over his shoulder, he saw that Blaze was right behind him.

Sonic grinned. “Not bad, princess, but you’re still too slow!”

Blaze ignored the taunt, focusing instead on the race. She could feel the heat building in her legs, the friction of the wind against her fur. She pushed harder, her body surging forward as she started to slowly match Sonic’s pace.

The two raced side by side, weaving through natural obstacles, dashing up hills, leaping over (or for Sonic’s case—skimming across) streams.

The flower field wasn’t far now—just beyond the next rise.

Sonic glanced at Blaze out of the corner of his eye. “Hope you’re ready to eat dust!”

Blaze smirked. “Not a chance.”

At the last second, she kicked off a small rock, flipping gracefully over Sonic. He blinked in surprise before grinning—she always had a trick up her sleeve.

He wasn’t about to let her win so easily, though. With a final burst of speed, he boosted forward, trying to close the distance between them.

The finish line—an endless field of spinflowers—was right there. They were neck and neck, neither willing to let the other claim victory.

Until they hit the ground.

Neither of them had been willing to slow down, and the moment they reached the flower field, their momentum carried them forward in an uncontrollable tumble. They crashed into the soft petals, rolling over each other in a chaotic blur of blue and purple.

And when they finally stopped, Sonic fell flat on his back, staring up at the sky, and Blaze lay beside him, her chest rising and falling as she caught her breath.

For a moment, there was silence. Then—

Laughter.

Deep, genuine, breathless laughter.

Sonic turned his head, watching as Blaze chuckled softly, her usual demeanor completely gone. He grinned, unable to hold back his own laughter.

“I…I dunno who won,” he admitted between breaths.

Blaze wiped a stray petal from her forehead, still smiling. “Does it matter?”

Sonic let his arms rest behind his head, gazing at the clouds above. “Not really, it doesn’t.”

They lay there, side-by-side, as the scent of flowers filled the air. Neither spoke, neither moved.

There was no need to.
