Tim took a step closer, his heart pounding in his chest. He swallowed hard, suddenly feeling like the air between them had thickened. He had to do this. Had to say it. Had to fight for her. “I told you I still love you,” he said, his voice low. “And you didn’t say it back.”
Her breath caught. He saw it in the way her chest rose and fell, in the way her eyes darted away. He saw the flicker of hesitation in her eyes before she looked down, her fingers fidgeting with the keys. When she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Tim, I—” she began, but he cut her off.
He couldn’t let her finish. Not yet. Not when his own heart was pounding so hard in his chest it physically hurt. “Just tell me one thing,” he said, stepping closer, desperate now, afraid if he didn’t, she’d slip through his fingers. “Have I lost you forever?”
