Chapter Text
Introduction
Hello everyone. This will be something a bit different from what I usually do. Since it is coming up to the 20th anniversary of the Revived era of Doctor Who, I have decided to celebrate in my own way. I will post ranking lists for all the seasons of the revival. I have done these before for my own enjoyment but now I have the means to get them across to a wider audience. I will be ranking all episodes of the seasons from least favourite to all time favourites. I will also be talking about the occasional special episode(only the ones that are in my opinion important enough to mention). I will also be having two parters as one story.
Series 1 Overview
Aside from a brief return in 1996, Doctor Who was off the air for 15 years after its original cancellation in 1989. Doctor Who was brought back to the screen by showrunner Russell T Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner.
Davies's pitch won out against two other pitches for the revival, one of which included a full on reboot. Doctor Who was relaunched for a whole new generation. The revival shifted towards character drama as well as occasional scares. The 25 minute runtime across multiple episodes from the classic era was replaced by a 45 minute format. This not only brought Doctor Who back, but also a resurgence in Saturday night teatime drama.
Series 1 of the revived era is often called the most "complete" due to its coherent narrative with a definitive beginning, middle and end. Although it was somewhat hindered by the production limitations of the time, Series 1 successfully laid the foundation for the next two decades and brought the show back from the so-called “Wilderness Years”.
