Chapter 1: Far Away

Chapter Text

Chase Hollow sat by his window, playing with the different colored knits tied to his fingers. Each of the strings led different directions. All leading to someone important in his life. On his pinky finger sat four purple strings, three of which leading out somewhere in Sugar Springs. Wherever his friends may be. The fourth one, he didn’t know who was on the other end. He hadn’t tried to follow it yet. It just wasn't the right time. Not that he was nervous to meet them. Of course not. It was just that the string led into the library and he really didn’t want to go there. Like, was he really meant to be friends with someone who read books all the time?

But then of course, he had a string attaching him to Deacon. But Deacon was family so it didn’t count.

He shifted his gaze over to his pointer finger where the blue strings were tied. Family. Grandpa Ralph’s led out to into the town where he was probably trying to dominate some craft competition. Deacon was upstairs in his room. His mom was… over at his aunt and uncle’s house. (he needs to visit her again soon.) And the last one… Chase trailed a finger over the broken, faded string and sighed. Sometimes he wished the strings wouldn’t cut. That he could live without the constant reminder of what he lost. It would be easier to pretend if…

He shook his head at that thought. There was no use thinking back on something that made him sad.

Instead, he focused on something a little happier. The single red string attached to his ring finger. He wasn’t sure where it led, but wherever it was, it certainly wasn’t close.

Chase remembers trying to follow it one day. He made it maybe two hours out of the city before he decided to come back. If his soulmate wanted to live on the other side of the world. Fine. Let him live on the other side of the world. It’s fine. Maybe he’s a superstar.  Ooh! What if he’s Alastair??

The blond sighed dreamily into the palm of his hand. That would be amazing… for Alastair to be his soulmate. They would become famous together. Tour the world. They would be the best couple. Fated to be soulmates. Together…

As he sat there, staring out into the blue sky, dreaming of meeting his soulmate, another boy sat in another room, writing poems for his own true love.

“Oh my love,

How I long to see your eyes.

How I long to see your smile.

May one day you be mine.

For our fates are intertwined.”

Deacon rested his chin in his hand as he stared out the window. One hand played with his red string longingly. Unlike Chase, Deacon had every means to go find his soulmate. Money, car, the desire to go find her… But instead, he sat in his room, writing poetry. Reading over the lines he wrote.

One day . He promised himself. One day I'll go find her.

“One day we shall meet,

And my heart shall skip a beat.

For I will be yours,

From now till evermore..”
