sleep well

Summary:

Louis sleeps with notifications on.

Notes:

Last one shot having more hits then the first story makes a bunch of you look silly. This one *definitely* requires having started with 'and then he burned dinner again' in the series.

Work Text:

Louis had learnt to sleep with notifications on. At first it was in case Daisuke needed a ride home from some party, then it was when he was waiting for every instance of evidence that Chie still existed, and now he'd simply never gotten out of the habit even though Chie now slept in the room across the hall.

He didn't know what time it was, but he woke up one eye still closed as his phone chimed. For a moment he didn't remember what year it was or who he was now, and it took a second longer to remember that awful reality. It wasn't a text from Daisuke. It never would be.

It took a little bit of fumbling but his hand soon grasped his phone and he squinted as he turned down the brightness. It wasn't a proper text, but a notification from a messaging app.

OGRC726: What was Daisuke's favorite color?

A message from Curly. It was three AM, although Louis forgot what timezone the former captain was in.  This wasn't the first odd late night question, and since Louis had never said anything against them, Curly kept sending them.

It was months since the lawsuit concluded against Pony Express, and Louis still didn't know what to make of Curly. He seemed to bounce between trying to make friends, and avoiding him out of guilt. Louis wasn't sure if Curly was doing this to the other families -certainly, aside from one apology meeting, he hadn't contacted Louis's parents- or if it was just because Louis was only a year or so older then Curly and he was merely looking for a similar aged friend. Or if it really was Curly just wanting to know random Daisuke facts.

His response was slowly typed, even the dim light still straining his eyes a little, but he responded all the same

Quinn-Ze.Louis: He 'didn't want to commit to just one color' but I always thought it was pink

That might be all he needed to tell Curly, but his fingers lingered over the keyboard as the Read notification popped up and he added

Quinn-Ze.Louis: He heard about how pink used to be considered a girl's color when he was five and promptly asked that his whole room be painted pink.

Quinn-Ze.Louis: He had his hair dyed a dark pink for a solid year after Chie first bleached his hair.

The Read notification came up again, and shortly after the dots of conversation.

OGRC726: Well that explains the shirt he wore over his work uniform

Quinn-Ze.Louis: I think he got that from the second hand store about 20 minutes from here.

OGRC726: I bet they loved him

Quinn-Ze.Louis: They did.

OGRC726: can't sleep but this helped a little. Thank you

Every so often Curly messaged him asking facts about Daisuke, but it certainly started to hurt less each time he did. Talking about Daisuke would never be not hard, five years passing too soon and yet in eternity, but Louis knew Daisuke would have felt awful if everyone just thought of him in sad ways. Louis did have to wipe away a few tears but not much as he'd cried in the past.

Quinn-Ze.Louis: sleep well, captain
