Knucklehead Princess

Summary:

Naruto was born a girl, but the village elders placed a jutsu on her to disguise her as a boy, hoping to prevent another Kushina Incident. For years, she lived unaware of her true identity. However, shortly after Orochimaru's attack on the village, the jutsu began to fade, revealing the truth and forcing Naruto to confront her past and her place in the village.

Chapter 1: The Lie

Chapter Text

It all began on an overcast day. Less than a month had passed since the Hidden Leaf Village had turned into a grueling battlefield, the result of Orochimaru’s reckless quest to destroy his former home. Thanks to the heroic sacrifice of the Third Hokage, as well as the efforts of Naruto and the other ninja of the Hidden Leaf, Orochimaru’s plans were thwarted, and the village survived to see another day.

However, things didn’t return to normal so easily. The scars of that battle lingered, and the shock and grief for the events that had transpired hung heavy in the air. The streets, usually bustling with life and cheer, were steeped in a somber silence. The adult shinobi worked tirelessly to rebuild the village, while the younger generation trained harder than ever before, their determination fueled by a newfound understanding of the stakes they would face.

It was a time of struggle for everyone, a period of change and transformation. Yet, for Naruto, the most profound change was still to come, one that would alter his life in ways he could never have imagined.

“Sasuke-teme! Stop dodging and fight me fair and square!” Naruto shouted as he launched another attack.

“Quit making excuses, loser.” Sasuke replied coolly, sidestepping with ease.

Ever since the Konoha Crush, the two boys had been sparring more frequently. Their rivalry drove them to push beyond their limits—not just for the sake of the village, but also for their own dreams. The hard work was paying off, both Naruto and Sasuke were significantly stronger than they were before the Chunin Exams.

“You show him who’s boss, Sasuke-kun!” Sakura cheered from the sidelines.

Sasuke’s expression remained stoic, but the faintest hint of a blush lit up onto his cheeks.

“Damn it! I can’t let him win Sakura over!” Naruto thought, his desperation building. “I’ve gotta give this everything I’ve got!” Gritting his teeth, he charged at Sasuke with a clenched fist.

But suddenly, his legs gave out beneath him.

“Gah!” Naruto grunted, dropping to one knee.

“Oi, Naruto, are you alright?” Sasuke asked with concern.

“I’m not feeling very—” Naruto’s sentence was cut short as a sharp, stabbing pain erupted in his abdomen. It felt as though an invisible force was tearing him apart from the inside. “AARGH!” he screamed, collapsing onto the ground and curling up, his arms clutching his midsection in agony.

“Naruto!” Sakura cried, springing to her feet and rushing to his side. Her usual frustration with him was replaced by genuine worry. “Something’s wrong… Sasuke, go get help!” she pleaded.

“On it.” Sasuke replied, his usual calm replaced by a serious determination. Without hesitation, he turned and sprinted toward the village.

Naruto’s pain was overwhelming, his every nerve ablaze, but he still tried to put on a brave face. “Don’t worry, Sakura-chan… I’m a man… I can handle this—” He winced as another wave of searing pain shot through him, his voice breaking mid-sentence. Any semblance of control he’d tried to maintain shattered.

“You idiot! This isn’t the time for your macho nonsense! You need help!” Sakura’s voice wavered, both angry and afraid.

“Heh… sorry, Sakura-chan…” Naruto muttered weakly, with a faint smirk on his lips. His vision began to blur, and the world around him darkened. He was slipping away.

“Naruto!” Sakura screamed, shaking him desperately as tears welled up in her eyes.

A couple of hours later, Naruto woke up on a hospital bed. His head felt heavy, and his thoughts were still hazy from the incident. As his vision cleared, he recognized familiar faces sitting on the chairs beside his bed: a worried pink-haired girl and a serious black-haired boy. A little farther back, a tall white-haired man was deep in conversation with a masked man, their tones low but urgent.

It was Sakura who first noticed Naruto stirring. “Jiraiya-san, Naruto’s awake!” she called, her voice a mix of relief and concern.

All eyes in the room turned to Naruto as Jiraiya approached the bed.

“Do you remember what happened, Naruto?” Jiraiya asked, his usual playful demeanor absent, replaced by an unusual seriousness.

“I… I was sparring with Sasuke when my stomach started hurting,” Naruto replied, his voice still groggy as he rubbed his abdomen.

“Did you do anything out of the ordinary before that? Maybe your signature Sexy Jutsu?” Jiraiya pressed, his tone probing.

“No, sir. Just regular taijutsu.” Naruto frowned but then perked up, placing a hand over his stomach. “But I’m feeling great now! The pain’s gone!” he added cheerfully.

Despite his reassurance, everyone’s expressions remained grave.

“Oh, Naruto…” Sakura muttered under her breath, her voice trembling slightly.

“What’s with those faces?” Naruto asked, his eyebrows knitting in confusion. “You’re all looking at me like I’m dying or something. I swear I’m fine! Maybe I just drank some bad milk again…”

“Naruto,” Kakashi interjected, his single visible eye studying him carefully. “Doesn’t your voice sound a little… off?”

“Yeah, it’s still a bit raspy. Probably from all the sleeping.” Naruto replied nonchalantly.

Kakashi sighed, running a hand down his masked face. “That’s not what I meant…”

Jiraiya stepped forward, his voice heavy. “Look, kid, there’s no easy way to tell you this. It’s probably better if you see it for yourself.” He handed Naruto a small hand mirror.

Naruto raised an eyebrow but took the mirror, grumbling, “I don’t know why you’re all acting so weird. I’m telling you, I’m fine—” His words stopped dead as he caught his reflection.

“What… the hell?” Naruto’s heart skipped a beat as he stared into the mirror.

The image staring back at him wasn’t his own—or at least, not the way he remembered. It was a girl. A blonde girl who looked strikingly like him, so much so that if he didn’t know better, he might’ve thought it was his long-lost twin sister.

“He” was “she” now. Naruto Uzumaki was a girl.

The newfound girl leapt from the bed in shock, clutching the mirror with trembling hands. “This is wrong. This is so wrong!” she stammered, her voice higher and softer than she remembered. The reflection showed longer, darker lashes framing her now slimmer, softer face. Her once spiky blonde hair cascaded down her back, with delicate bangs perfectly framing her tanned features.

Out of sheer panic, Naruto hurled the mirror away. “Release!” she shouted, forming a handsign. Nothing happened.

“Damn it! Why can’t I release this transformation jutsu? I don’t even remember using one!”

Jiraiya placed a steady hand on her slender shoulder. “I’m afraid this isn’t a jutsu, Naruto,” he said gravely.

“What?!” she screamed, her voice cracking with disbelief. “Then what else could it be?!”

“Calm down, Naruto!” Jiraiya urged. “I’ll explain everything, but you need to sit and listen.”

Naruto took a shaky breath, forcing herself to steady. “Fine. I’m listening.”

Her gaze flicked toward her teammates. Sakura’s wide eyes betrayed her confusion, while Sasuke’s usual cool demeanor had vanished, replaced by an anxious expression. He looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.

Catching the shift in Naruto’s attention, Jiraiya quickly intervened. “Naruto is fine, everyone. He’s not going to die! Now, I need to discuss some personal matters with him. If you don’t mind…”

“You heard Jiraiya-san. Let’s go,” Kakashi said, motioning toward the door.

Sasuke didn’t need to be told twice. He was out of the room in a flash, and Sakura hesitated only briefly before following. At the door, she turned back, her face softening.

“I’m glad you’re okay,” she said quietly, then left the room.

Naruto sat on the hospital bed, arms crossed, scowling. Her hands were clenched into fists, knuckles white with tension. “Alright, I’m listening.” she muttered. “Now tell me what the hell is going on!”

Jiraiya took a deep breath, his usual easygoing attitude nowhere to be found. He pulled up a chair and sat across from Naruto.

“This isn’t some random transformation, Naruto,” he began. “This is your real body. The truth is… you were born a girl.”

Naruto’s breath hitched. For a moment, her mind went blank. She stared at Jiraiya, waiting for the punchline, waiting for him to laugh and say it was all some sick joke. But he didn’t. His expression remained firm.

Naruto shook her head violently. “No. No way. That doesn’t make any sense! I’ve been a boy my whole life!”

“You were raised as one,” Jiraiya corrected. “But that’s not what you were at birth.”

Naruto’s stomach twisted. “That’s… that’s insane!” she said, with a shaking voice. “Why? Why would anyone do that to me?”

Jiraiya sighed. “To avoid another ‘Nine-Tails Incident.’”

Naruto flinched at the mention of the demon fox. “What does the Nine-Tails have to do with this?” she demanded.

Jiraiya’s expression darkened. “The common folk believes the Nine-Tails incident 13 years ago was a natural disaster, but that’s not the truth.”

Naruto nodded attentively.

“The real reason the Nine-Tails was unleashed into the village that night was because the previous jinchūriki got pregnant. Because she was a woman, her chakra control weakened during pregnancy. The seal on the Nine-Tails broke, and the village nearly fell that night. The Third Hokage and the elders swore they would never let that happen again.”

Naruto’s heart pounded against her ribs. “What are you saying?”

Jiraiya looked directly into the girl’s eyes. “Not long after you were born, they decided things would be better if you were a boy. With the aid of a powerful Sealing Jutsu, they changed your body into one of a biological male. That way, you’d never get pregnant. You’d never risk the same thing happening again.”

Jiraiya was pensive. “I supposed your use of the Nine-Tails chakra during the Chunin Exams messed with the stability of said Sealing Jutsu, making it come undone…”

The world felt like it was spinning. Naruto’s breath came out in short gasps, her head light with disbelief. “No… no, that’s—” She gritted her teeth. “That’s bullshit!”

“I don’t blame you for being angry.” Jiraiya said with a steady voice. “But this was a decision made before you could even walk. The village prioritized security over your identity. They thought they were protecting Konoha… and you.”

Naruto’s nails dug into her palms. “Protecting me?!” she spat. “By lying to me? By stealing my life from me?!” Her body trembled with rage. “Everything I thought I was… it was just something they forced on me?”

Jiraiya didn’t answer. He let Naruto’s words hang in the air, heavy and suffocating.

Naruto gritted her teeth, her vision blurring with tears she refused to shed. “You knew, didn’t you?”

Jiraiya closed his eyes for a moment before nodding. “I did.”

Naruto felt something inside her crack. The man she trusted, the closest thing she had to a father figure, had known the truth this whole time—and he never told her.

Her chest tightened, a deep, searing pain spreading through her. “I don’t even know who I am anymore.” she whispered.

Jiraiya’s face was filled with guilt. “It was for the best, Naruto.”

Naruto laughed bitterly. “You had no right to make that choice for me!”

Jiraiya had nothing more to say.

The silence stretched between them, tinged with betrayal and anger.

Naruto clenched her fists and looked away. “I need to be alone.”

Jiraiya hesitated, but after a long moment, he nodded and stood up. “I’ll be outside if you need me.” With that, he turned and left the room.

The door clicked shut.

Naruto sat in the empty room, staring at her hands. They were smaller now, more delicate than before. Everything about her felt foreign.

She gritted her teeth, trying to hold back the overwhelming wave of emotions.

“Damn it…” she whispered. “Damn it all…”

Naruto trudged back to her apartment, her steps heavy, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and anger. The familiar sight of her tiny, messy home did little to comfort her. It still looked the same—the old furniture, the stacks of instant ramen cups, the Hokage posters on the wall—but to Naruto, it felt like she was stepping into a stranger’s room.

She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, taking a shaky breath. Her hands trembled as she ran them through her now long wavy hair. It felt so foreign, so wrong.

With a frustrated growl, she stomped toward the bed and collapsed onto it, staring at the ceiling. Her mind wouldn’t stop racing.

“Who am I?”

Her entire life, she had fought to prove herself, to be acknowledged. She wanted to be Hokage, to be respected. She wanted to surpass all the odds stacked against her. But now… now she didn’t even know who she was proving herself as.

She clenched her fists.

“Was I ever really me?”

Her thoughts spiraled deeper. “What about my crush on Sakura?” She had spent so long chasing after her, trying to impress her. But was that still the same? Did this change anything?

And then there was Sasuke. Their rivalry, their fights, their unspoken brotherhood—was that all a lie too? Would Sasuke look at her differently now? The thought made her stomach twist.

“Am I really just one of the girls now?”

That idea felt even stranger. She had never thought of herself as anything but one of the guys. She roughhoused, trained, fought, and lived like any other boy. The idea of suddenly being seen as something else, of being treated differently made her uneasy.

She curled up on the bed, pulling the blanket over her as if it could shield her from reality. “This whole thing is a mess…” She wanted to believe this was all a nightmare. That she’d wake up tomorrow, everything back to normal.

Later that night, a knock was heard on the door, startling the confused girl.

“…Go away.” she muttered, not in the mood for another lecture from Jiraiya.

The knocking came again, gentler this time. “Naruto, it’s me.”

Naruto’s eyes widened slightly. “Iruka-sensei?”

She hesitated for a moment before dragging herself to the door. When she opened it, she saw Iruka standing there with his usual approachable face.

“Can I come in?” he asked.

Naruto bit her lip but stepped aside, letting him enter. He glanced around, noting the untouched ramen cups on the table—Naruto hadn’t eaten at all.

“…Jiraiya told me,” Iruka finally said, turning to face her.

Naruto flinched. She expected this. More explanations, more excuses. She tensed up, preparing for another wave of frustration. “So? You gonna tell me how this was ‘for the best’ too?”

But Iruka shook his head. “No. Because I didn’t know either.”

Naruto blinked. “What?”

“I found out today, same as you,” he admitted. “And honestly… I’m still processing it too.” He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I always thought I knew everything about you. I was there when you were just a brat running around, causing trouble. But I never imagined something like this was being kept from you.”

Naruto studied his face carefully. There was no pity. No awkwardness. Just genuine concern.

“…So what do you think?” she asked, her voice quieter than usual. “Do you see me differently now?”

Iruka frowned, as if the question itself annoyed him. “Naruto, listen to me. No matter what anyone says, no matter what gender you were born as—you are still you.”

Naruto clenched her fists. “But what if I don’t even know who ‘me’ is anymore?”

Iruka took a step closer. “You’re the same Naruto who never gives up. The same Naruto who dreams of being Hokage. The same Naruto who’s always been like a little brother—” He paused for a moment, then gave a sheepish smile. “Or, uh… little sister, I guess.”

Naruto stared at him before snorting. It wasn’t much, but it was the first thing even close to a laugh she had let out all day.

Iruka smiled. “See? You’re still the same knucklehead I know.”

Naruto looked away, her throat tightening. “But what about everyone else? What if they… treat me different?”

Iruka placed a firm hand on her shoulder. “Then they’re idiots.” he said simply. “Your real friends will see you for who you are. Not just as a ‘boy’ or a ‘girl’, but as Naruto Uzumaki.”

Naruto swallowed hard. “You really mean that?”

Iruka didn’t hesitate. “With all my heart.”

For the first time that day, Naruto felt some of the weight on her chest lift. She took a shaky breath, then, without thinking, threw her arms around Iruka. He was startled at first, but quickly hugged her back, resting a hand on her head like he had so many times before.

“Tomorrow, ramen is on me!” the sensei promised.

The blonde girl let out a warm smile.
