Work Text:

The spire was silent, save for the occasional flutter of a bird’s wings outside the tall windows. The walls, adorned with soft tapestries and healing artifacts, seemed to hum with a quiet, sacred energy. Pure Vanilla Cookie stood near one of the large, open windows, gazing out into the evening sky. His expression was calm, peaceful even, as if the world outside were his sanctuary.

Shadow Milk Cookie, however, was seated across the room, sprawled on a plush velvet couch, arms crossed and eyes half-lidded. His gaze was trained on the floor, but his mind was far away, lost in a swirling mix of conflicting emotions. He couldn’t shake the restlessness gnawing at him, the ever-present tension in his chest that no amount of time in Pure Vanilla’s serene spire could seem to ease.

“Shadow Milk,” Pure Vanilla’s voice broke through the silence, smooth and gentle, like a soft breeze. “I’ve decided that it’s time for a change of scenery.”

Shadow Milk lifted his gaze, slightly confused. “A change of scenery?” he echoed, his voice tinged with skepticism.

Pure Vanilla turned to face him, a soft smile tugging at his lips. “Yes, it’s been a while since we’ve had an outing together. I think it would do you some good.”

Shadow Milk’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not exactly the ‘outing’ type, Vanilla.”

Pure Vanilla’s expression didn’t waver. “I know, but that’s exactly why we’re going. I want you to relax, just for a while. We’re going to a café.”

A café?

Shadow Milk blinked, taken aback. A café? What did he need with a café?

He opened his mouth to argue, but Pure Vanilla was already moving towards him, his calm presence filling the space around him like a soft glow.

“Come on, it’ll be good for you,” Pure Vanilla said, his voice carrying a warmth that seemed impossible to resist. “I’ve already made arrangements. We leave in a moment.”

Shadow Milk opened his mouth to protest, but found the words stuck. Something in Pure Vanilla’s tone made it impossible to refuse. He didn’t know why. Maybe it was the gentle way Pure Vanilla spoke, or the kindness that seemed to radiate from him. Either way, he found himself standing up reluctantly, feeling his muscles protest against the sudden motion.

“Fine, but I’m not going to pretend I enjoy this,” Shadow Milk muttered, brushing a hand through his disheveled hair.

Pure Vanilla smiled brightly, his golden eyes twinkling. “I’m not asking you to enjoy it, but I’d like you to at least try.”

The walk to the café was quiet, the evening air cool against their skin. Shadow Milk followed close behind, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his coat. He kept his gaze averted, watching the world around him without truly seeing it. The streets were alive with the usual bustle—crisp, clean air carrying the sound of distant chatter, the scent of freshly baked bread wafting from the nearby bakeries, and the soft clinking of dishes and cups from the surrounding cafés.

It wasn’t long before they arrived at a small, quaint café tucked between two larger buildings. The windows were frosted, and the warm glow from inside beckoned them in. Shadow Milk hesitated at the door, looking up at the delicate sign that hung above.

Pure Vanilla, oblivious to his hesitation, opened the door and stepped inside, the bell above ringing softly as they entered. Shadow Milk followed, the familiar sounds of the café—a clink of spoons, the hum of conversation—surrounding him as they made their way to a corner booth.

A server, young and eager, approached them with a welcoming smile. “Good evening! How can I help you today?”

Pure Vanilla smiled back, his tone soft and gracious. “We’ll have two cups of tea, please. And perhaps something light to snack on.”

Shadow Milk, still feeling out of place, just nodded, trying to avoid making eye contact with anyone in the café. He slid into the booth across from Pure Vanilla, his arms crossed as he sank into the plush seat.

“So, what exactly are we doing here?” Shadow Milk asked, still trying to make sense of it all. “I’m not really the café type, Vanilla.”

Pure Vanilla’s smile remained steady, as if this was exactly what he had expected. “I know. But sometimes, it’s important to step outside of our comfort zones.” His eyes softened as he looked at Shadow Milk. “We get so used to the chaos in our lives, Shadow Milk. Sometimes it’s good to just sit and be still. To find peace in the quiet moments.”

Shadow Milk let out a short, incredulous laugh. “Peace? You think sitting in a café with a bunch of strangers is going to bring me peace?”

Pure Vanilla’s gaze didn’t waver. “I think peace can be found in the smallest moments. And sometimes, the presence of others, even if they’re strangers, can offer comfort.”

Shadow Milk fell silent. The words, though simple, carried a weight to them. Something deeper than what he was willing to admit. He tried to brush it off, but his chest tightened uncomfortably at the thought. He glanced around the café again, trying to distract himself. The smell of tea filled the air, mixing with the scent of pastries and the soft murmurs of the other patrons.

When their tea arrived, Shadow Milk wrapped his hands around the warm cup, feeling the heat seep into his cold fingers. He stared into the steaming liquid, the faintest ripple in the surface mirroring his own restless thoughts.

“This is ridiculous,” he muttered under his breath, but there was no real venom in his words. Just the usual resistance he built to guard himself from the vulnerability of moments like this.

Pure Vanilla simply smiled, unfazed. “You don’t have to pretend, you know.”

Shadow Milk looked up sharply, caught off guard by the softness in Pure Vanilla’s gaze. “Pretend? I’m not pretending,” he snapped, though his voice lacked the usual edge. He took a sip of his tea, letting the warmth fill his chest. The taste was delicate, soothing, but it didn’t change the unease inside him.

“You don’t have to pretend with me, Shadow Milk,” Pure Vanilla repeated, his voice steady and unwavering. “You can just… be.”

The words settled between them, heavy and silent. Shadow Milk’s breath caught in his throat, and for a moment, he allowed himself to just be. To let go of the tension in his shoulders and just exist in the space, beside Pure Vanilla, without the walls and the pretenses. It wasn’t easy, but in this small moment, he allowed it.

“Fine,” Shadow Milk muttered, his voice quieter now. “Maybe it’s not so bad.”

Pure Vanilla’s smile widened, a soft laugh escaping him. “I’m glad to hear that.”

As they sat together in the quiet café, the world outside seemed distant, fading away. For once, Shadow Milk didn’t mind. The moment was small, fleeting, but it was something he hadn’t realized he needed.
