Work Text:

It was one of those rare, peaceful weekends. The kind where everything felt effortlessly perfect. No obligations, no plans, just the two of them at home, enjoying each other’s company. Kate and Anthony had spent the whole week in a whirlwind of family events, friends dropping by, and catching up on errands. But today, they had nothing but each other.

Kate was sprawled out on the couch, her feet tucked under her as she flipped through a book. She was halfway through one of her favorites, the type of novel that always felt like coming home. She’d read it countless times, but the words always drew her in, no matter how many times she’d seen them.

She smiled to herself, losing track of time, when she heard a soft rustling from the kitchen. She could always tell when Anthony was in the kitchen—there was a specific rhythm to the way he moved around, a calm energy that was comforting. It was always in these quiet, mundane moments that she felt closest to him.

She heard the clink of a plate, followed by a low murmur—Anthony was singing to himself again. It wasn’t the most tuneful thing, but it was always endearing. The sound made her smile.

Setting her book down, she stood up, stretching, and padded softly across the hardwood floor toward the kitchen. As she entered, she leaned against the doorframe, watching Anthony as he hummed while he chopped vegetables. He didn’t notice her at first, too focused on his task.

“Are you serenading the onions again?” she teased, her voice light and amused.

Anthony turned, his face lighting up with a grin when he saw her. “I’m just making sure they know how much I appreciate them,” he said, holding up a knife as though it were a microphone. He winked at her, making her laugh.

Kate rolled her eyes but stepped into the kitchen. She couldn’t help herself. Seeing him so comfortable, so himself, always made her heart flutter. “You’re ridiculous,” she said, crossing to the counter to help with the chopping.

He laughed, the sound rich and warm, and reached out to brush a lock of hair behind her ear. “Maybe. But I’m your ridiculous.”

“I suppose that’s true,” Kate said with a smile, moving to stand beside him. They’d developed a rhythm together in the kitchen—him doing the heavy lifting, her taking care of the details. They worked in comfortable silence for a few moments, the sound of the knife against the cutting board the only noise between them.

After a while, Anthony turned the stove on, checking the pan and then glancing at Kate. “You hungry?”

She nodded, the scent of the food filling the room. “Very. I’m starving, actually.”

“You’re always starving,” he teased, nudging her with his elbow.

Kate smirked, tapping him lightly on the arm. “That’s only because I’m always around to see your excellent cooking.”

He gave her a knowing look. “Flatterer.”

“Not flattery,” she replied. “Just honesty. I’ve seen you make worse things than this, but it’s always amazing.”

Anthony smiled at her, but it was the kind of smile that softened his whole face. There was no pretense, no bravado—just him, looking at her with all the love in the world. “I’m glad you think so.”

As the meal continued to come together, Kate moved to the small table by the window, setting the last few items in place. The afternoon sun poured in, casting a warm glow over everything. It was simple—nothing extravagant. Just a small, cozy moment in their shared life.

When Anthony finished, he placed two plates down on the table, the steam rising from the food, making her mouth water. He sat down across from her, a playful grin on his lips.

“So, what’s your plan for the rest of the day?” he asked, his voice easy and relaxed. “More reading?”

Kate shrugged, her eyes glancing over the food. “Maybe. I was thinking about taking a walk later. You?”

“I might join you,” he said with a casual air, but the look in his eyes was soft, like he wanted to share the moment with her. “It’s a good day for it.”

They ate slowly, savoring the quiet, the comfortable silence broken only by the occasional laugh or soft conversation. Kate found herself watching him more than she’d realized—how he moved so effortlessly, the way he interacted with the world around him. She never thought she’d find herself so content in these simple, peaceful moments.

As they finished the meal, Kate leaned back in her chair, feeling full and satisfied—not just from the food, but from the quiet companionship they shared.

“Thank you for cooking, by the way,” she said, her voice sincere.

“You’re welcome,” Anthony replied, giving her a warm smile. “Though, I suspect you’re just buttering me up so I’ll take care of the dishes.”

“Not true,” she said, laughing. “But it wouldn’t hurt if you did.”

Anthony shot her an exaggerated look of exasperation. “You’re impossible.”

They stood together, clearing the table. There was something about this small, domestic task that always made Kate feel more connected to him. She couldn’t put it into words, but the way they moved through life together—coexisting, supporting, laughing, and sharing—was more meaningful than anything grand.

When the dishes were done, they sat together on the couch, legs stretched out in front of them. The soft glow of the lamp illuminated the room, and the only sound was the quiet hum of contentment. Kate rested her head on Anthony’s shoulder, closing her eyes for a moment.

“Today was nice,” she murmured, her fingers tracing circles on his chest.

“Yeah,” Anthony replied softly. “It was perfect.”

She tilted her head up to meet his gaze. “I’m glad we get these days. They’re important.”

He smiled, his hand finding hers. “They’re everything.”

And in that moment, surrounded by the comfort of home, Kate felt a quiet peace settle over her. This was what she wanted. This, right here, was the love she’d always dreamed of.
