Beginnings

Summary:

Spock finds out he’s pregnant; Jim didn’t know that could happen.

Notes:

Prompt:

I would love pregnancy angst. Your choice if Kirk or Spock is pregnant, and I don’t care how the pregnancy happened, though I’d definitely love it if it was unplanned and something complicated happened for it to occur, like science fiction shenanigans or aliens going out of their way to make their lives hell. I want to see the impact of it on their relationship—maybe one of them is more open to it than the other. I want to see them anxious and scared and a little angry. Your choice if they keep the pregnancy or terminate; I really just want the pregnancy to be the vehicle for some good character study and relationship study. Can be any rating and any universe, and feel free to write as happy or sad of an ending as you want!

Work Text:

The soft blue glow of the medical scanner reflected in Dr. McCoy's eyes as he stared at the results, his expression cycling through confusion, disbelief, and finally settling on something resembling stunned acceptance.

"Well, I'll be damned," he muttered, running the scan once more as if expecting different results.

Across from him, Commander Spock sat perched on the edge of the examination table, his posture rigid even by Vulcan standards. Only the slight tightening around his eyes betrayed any emotion.

"You are certain, Doctor?" Spock asked, his voice perfectly level.

McCoy set down the scanner. "As certain as I can be about something that should be biologically impossible. But there it is." He leaned against his desk, arms crossed. "You're pregnant, Spock."

The silence that followed was profound.

"I must inform the Captain," Spock said finally.

McCoy raised an eyebrow. "Jim doesn't know yet? Well, this ought to be interesting."

Captain James T. Kirk had faced countless dangers across the galaxy—hostile aliens, spatial anomalies, diplomatic crises—but nothing had prepared him for the sight of his First Officer and bondmate standing awkwardly in their quarters, hands clasped behind his back, delivering this particular news.

"You're what?" Jim's voice cracked slightly on the final word.

"I am with child, Jim. Our child." Spock's tone remained calm, though a faint green flush had crept up his neck. "Dr. McCoy has confirmed it."

Jim sank into the chair behind his desk, running a hand through his hair. "How is this even possible? Why didn't you tell me this could happen?" A flash of anger colored his words. "Were you planning on mentioning at some point that you could get pregnant?"

"I believed myself to be sterile," Spock replied. "My hybrid physiology has always presented... complications. The probability of conception was calculated at less than 0.003%."

"That's not zero, Spock!" Jim stood abruptly, pacing the small confines of their shared quarters. "You know that Vulcans of both sexes can carry children and you didn't think to mention it?"

"As I said, I believed the point moot due to my—"

"Due to your hybrid status. Yes, I heard you." Jim's frustration was palpable. "But this isn't just about biology, Spock. This is about trust and communication. We're bonded, for god's sake!"

Spock's shoulders stiffened imperceptibly. "I apologize for the oversight, Captain."

The formal title stung Jim like a physical blow. He stopped pacing and looked—really looked—at Spock for the first time since this conversation began. Behind the Vulcan's impassive expression, Jim could sense confusion, uncertainty, and something else... a tentative connection already forming.

Jim's anger deflated as quickly as it had arisen. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have reacted that way." He moved closer, reaching for Spock's hand. "This is just... unexpected."

"Indeed," Spock agreed, allowing the touch. "For both of us."

Later that night, they lay together in the darkness of their quarters, the stars streaking by at warp speed outside their viewport. Jim's hand rested lightly on Spock's still-flat abdomen.

"What do you want to do?" Jim asked softly.

Spock was quiet for so long that Jim wondered if he'd fallen asleep. Finally, he spoke.

"I wish to keep the child," Spock admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can already sense their presence in my mind. It is... most profound."

Jim propped himself up on one elbow, studying Spock's face in the dim starlight. "You can already feel them?"

"Not thoughts, precisely. But a presence. A potential." Spock hesitated. "It would be illogical to deny that I have formed an attachment."

Jim smiled faintly. "Only you could make parental love sound like a scientific observation."

"What are your thoughts on the matter?" Spock asked, turning to face him.

Jim sighed, letting his head fall back onto the pillow. "Honestly? I'm terrified. I never saw myself as father material. My own wasn't exactly a shining example."

"You are not George Kirk."

"No, but I'm not exactly stable either, am I? Charging into danger, taking risks..." Jim shook his head. "And then there's Starfleet, the mission, our careers..."

"All valid concerns," Spock acknowledged.

Jim took Spock's hand, threading their fingers together. "But if you're asking if I want this child with you? Yes. Terrified as I am, yes."

Something in Spock's expression softened. "Fear in the face of unknown variables is logical. I too am... apprehensive."

Jim couldn't help but smile. "Did you just admit to being scared?"

"I admitted to apprehension. A reasonable response to an unforeseen life alteration."

"Whatever you say." Jim leaned forward to press a gentle kiss to Spock's lips. "We'll figure this out. Together."

"Indeed." Spock's free hand moved to cover Jim's where it still rested on his abdomen. "It would appear our family is about to become illogically, beautifully human."

"And perfectly, logically Vulcan," Jim added.

In the darkness of their quarters, as the Enterprise carried them through the vastness of space, two minds and hearts circled around a third, tiny presence just beginning to make itself known to the universe.
