Summary
Varian and Hugo have grown up together, engaging in a grudging, one-sided friendship, in which Hugo seeks out Varian's companionship all the while pushing the other to frustration and anger. In one of their mutual college courses, they learn of two alchemist from the past who were responsible for many inventions but were nearly wiped from history due to their sexual orientation. The more the boys use the two's discovered element, Hugorium, to try to sabotage one another, the closer they get to the realization that this whole thing feels like deja vu. New pranks and time together bring the boys closer together, but it also brings about memories from a time long ago. Long, long ago, in the feudal past of Corona, as two brilliant scientists forging the path for those who'd come after. As Hugo and Varian remember their past lives, realizing their connection, they find that sometimes new lives can mimic those that came before.
