Work Text:
The grand hall of Kaitain shimmered with golden light, the glow of a thousand chandeliers reflecting off silk and polished armor. Nobles from every House moved like pieces on a board, eyes sharp, words sharper.
Paul Atreides stood near the edge of the dance floor, watching. He had learned young to listen with more than ears, to see what lay beneath a gesture, a glance. And then—he felt it.
A presence.
Across the room, near the House Corrino delegation, stood Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. He was dressed in black and silver, a predator among prey, eyes shadowed but gleaming. Paul had expected hatred at first sight, something hot and immediate. Instead, the moment their eyes met, the universe seemed to still.
Feyd smirked, tilting his glass in mock salute. Paul felt his own lips twitch, surprised at the instinct to answer. He shouldn’t have.
Yet he did.
They met in the periphery of the ballroom, where the lights dimmed and the music softened. Feyd’s voice was velvet laced with knives.
"Strange to find an Atreides lingering in the dark."
"Stranger for a Harkonnen to meet him there," Paul murmured, stepping closer.
Feyd laughed, low and knowing. "We are meant to be enemies."
"And yet."
The space between them was thin as a blade’s edge. Paul was aware of the heat of Feyd’s body, of the way danger curled in his smile. There was no logic to what he felt—this pull, sharp and electric, something older than duty and deeper than blood feuds.
Feyd moved first. A hand, bold against the curve of Paul’s waist. Paul let it linger. Then, swift as a whisper, he turned, pressing Feyd against the cold marble of the column behind them.
Their breaths mingled, the weight of centuries-old rivalry between them, but in that moment, it did not matter.
"I could kill you right now," Feyd murmured, though his voice lacked conviction.
Paul smiled, leaning in, his lips a breath away. "I know."
Neither moved away.
The night was long, and the shadows held their secrets well.
