Work Text:
Kaito usually doesn't have problems sleeping through the night.
Sometimes he wakes up when Kazuichi stirs, because he does toss a lot, but it's not so much it would bother him. He falls asleep quite fast and sometimes forgets he was ever awake in the first place until Kazuichi apologizes for it.
Leon snores sometimes, but it's quiet and wheezy and while Kaito wouldn't say that out loud, it's actually kind of cute. Not bothersome. Not a reason he'd wake up annoyed.
Tonight however Kaito is awoken by the sound of something scraping. He blinks the sleep out of his eyes and groans, stretching his arms.
This only wakes him up further, because he realizes that the bed is empty. Not only Kazuichi but also Leon is missing, and the clock on the nightstand reads three am in red letters. He feels like he had just laid down for the night five minutes ago, and where did both of his boyfriends go at this time? Was Kazuichi afraid to go to the toilet alone?
The scraping noise continues and light pools through the gap underneath the door. Kaito briefly questions if the clock might be wrong, but it's pitch black outside.
"The hell are they doin' in the middle of the night?"
Kaito scratches the back of his neck and swings his legs out of the bed, feeling for his slippers. He's awake now anyway, so he might as well check it out.
He pads through the darkness of the bedroom and opens the door, the hallway light briefly blinding him. Squinting, he makes his way into the living room, where he finds his missing partners.
Kazuichi and Leon are sitting on the floor, and Kazuichi looks half asleep. Legs crossed and his elbow propped up on his knee, face half buried in his palm.
There's torn cardboard box pieces laying around, as well as wooden scraps. Leon is sawing on one of them, tongue poking through his lips. Where the hell did he get that? Kazuichi's toolbox? From the garage, at this time?
His eyes are so fixed on his work that he doesn't even take notice of Kaito. Kazuichi's eyes are closed and he keeps tilting forward, trying not to doze off fully.
"Err, guys? What's this?", Kaito asks.
Kazuichi groggily looks up. His eyes are dark bagged, so Kaito figures this has probably been going on for a while already.
"Don't look at me. This wasn't my idea."
Kaito frowns and crosses his arms, leaning against the doorframe. "Then why are you here?"
"Makin' sure that Leon doesn't amputate his arm. I woke up because he cut his fucking hand on the saw."
"Shut up. That was part of the plan", Leon quips.
Sure enough, there's a bandage on his hand, Kaito notices. "The fuck are you doing?", he prods.
Leon groans in annoyance and finally lets up from the saw. "I'm gonna change career", he proclaims, "Fuck baseball! I'm gonna become a rockstar! I'm gonna make my own guitar, just watch."
"In the middle of the fucking night?!", Kaito exclaims.
Kazuichi waves his hand. "I already tried, he won't listen. Who knows what kinda movie he saw again."
"I know you're not takin' me serious now but you'll see, it's gonna be dope when it's done."
Kaito inspects the torn cardboard and notices something else. "Was that the new living room table?"
Leon ducks his head and quickly returns to sawing. "No?"
"I fuckin' knew it", Kazuichi groans and falls backwards on the carpet, "You said we didn't need that!"
"We don't! I'll buy a new one once I'm famous!"
"Hello?" Kaito snaps his fingers. "Not at three am?"
"You gotta live your dream in the moment dude!", Leon calls out, "Ain't you the one who always says the impossible is possible?"
"Not at three am. Jackshit is possible at three am."
Kaito yawns. He's a bit mad about the table but he doesn't feel like discussing that right now. It won't change anything and he's tired and irritated from being awoken at this time.
"Both of ya, back to bed. We ain't having this discussion right now."
"I'm almost done!", Leon argues.
Nothing of his raggedy sawed wood pieces even remotely look like a guitar.
"Should I crack his skull open and check if he needs an oil change?", Kazuichi offers, and it makes Kaito laugh while Leon doesn't seem to find that funny.
"Yer won't be laughing once I go on world tour and yer not invited", he growls.
Kazuichi flicks his wrist. "With that? Y'know, normal people would buy a guitar if they were serious."
"Costs money. And I am serious. Yer will all see just how fuckin' serious I am-"
"Alright."
Kaito has heard enough. Kazuichi can barely keep his eyes open and he starts to think maybe Leon tried snorting an energy drink through the nose again. Wouldn't be the first time.
He walks over and promptly lifts Leon up at the scruff of his shirt to curtly throw him over his shoulder. He drops the saw and Kaito shoves it away with his shoe.
"C'mon Kaz, let's head back to bed."
"I wasn't done yet!", Leon complains.
Kazuichi sits up and steals a last glance at the warfield Leon has left on the carpet, before he shrugs. Kaito already knows that's gonna be a pain to get out of the carpet, but that's a chore reserved to morning-Kaito. To make Leon do it, that is.
Under loud protests, Kaito carries Leon back to bed and half-tosses him in the mattress with a bounce. Kazuichi doesn't leave him any time to flee. He leaps after him and tightly wraps his arms around him, effectively locking him in place until he finally gives up.
Kaito turns the light in the hallway off and closes the door, making his way through the dark back to bed where Leon is still mumbling curses under his breath.
The whole procedure took a lot longer than Kaito would have liked. It's morning soon and the clock taunts Kaito with the last edges of nighttime. Whatever has gotten into Leon can wait until he has slept, he guesses.
"Quit squirming now. If you replace that table I'll get ya your damn guitar", Kaito sighs as he kicks off his slippers, shuffling back under the covers.
Leon goes quiet for a moment before he whispers a response.
"Seriously?"
"I ain't sayin' it again. No more night building though. We gotta put up house rules because of you."
"Like Kaz is any better", Leon scoffs but doesn't complain further.
Kazuichi must be asleep already. There's a beat of silence before Kaito hears Leon add another thing quietly.
"Sorry 'bout that. Thanks."
"Don't mention it."
Kaito has always been a little too forgiving. In all honesty, he doesn't even care that much about the table anymore, he just wants Leon to think before he acts.
Though if he wanted that, he probably wouldn't date those two. Maybe that one's on him.
