Work Text:

It was late at night, or, perhaps early in the morning would be better to describe the current time. It was well past midnight, and the pair of detectives were still up working while everyone else in task force already went to sleep. Light had fallen asleep an hour ago in the chair beside L after insisting that he was only laying his head down for a moment to rest his eyes

Working on the Task Force was slowly chipping away at Kenzou's well being. Losing more and more sleep as the months went on. He hadn't had a case this stressful in years, and still that was nothing like this. This was unlike any case he ever solved, I mean, there were supernatural influences of course it was different. He'd never been as stressed as he was now, and not to mention just being here was basically him signing his life away.

Much like L, Kenzou still believed Light had to be Kira. In fact he knew Light was Kira. There were so many factors indicating it was him. Even though he knew Light likely had no memories of being Kira, like L had suggested along with the power of Kira being passed to different people he still held some sort of resentment towards Light. Even when he first met Light he wasn't a fan of him. He felt fake, like he had something to hide.

In all honesty a part of his suspicion laid in his trust towards L. L and Kenzou obviously hadn't been close, but his trust wasn't placed blindly. L was the world's greatest detective, that and he worked on cases with L before. If he were to trust anyone, it would be him. He had major respect towards L.

Kenzou hadn't realized how long he had been staring at the two men beside him until he was pulled out of his thoughts by a hand pushing a plate of candies towards him. He looked up at L for a moment, processing in his head before he reached out to grab one.

"Thank you." He said quietly, being mindful of Light sleeping beside them, and placing it inside of his mouth. It was some type of strawberry flavored hard candy.

"You should go to sleep, there's no reason for you to stay up any longer." L spoke, eyes back onto what he was doing before hand.

He was right, Kenzou's focus on the task he had been doing was slipping, he kept zoning out and staring at his screen. He wasn't really getting anything done anymore. Just thinking.

Kenzou took a moment before replying, studying L's face as he often found himself doing. "Im not sure i'd be able to sleep if I tried"

"At the very least, you should take a break. You look bad." L pointed out.

He would be offended at the comment if not for the fact he agreed. He noticed his condition showing in his appearance but he did his best to hide it. Kenzou opened his mouth the speak but L continued, stacking some of the candies on the plate on top of each other while he spoke.

"I worry that your performance will start being affected by your lack of sleep"

Kenzou nodded. "Okay." L was right he should be taking a break, he wouldn't be much help if he couldn't think properly. He sighed as he began to save and close stuff on the computer in front of him.

He got up from his chair, and pushed it in. Grabbing his sweater that he had folded over the chair. "Goodnight L."

"Goodnight Dike."

Despite not thinking he could fall asleep, as soon as Kenzou reached his room in head quarters and got in bed he immediately passed out.

---

The sound of his door closing was what woke Kenzou up. Usually he woke up early, around 6 to 7 am no matter what, but as he tiredly rubbed his eyes and checked the clock it read 9:47 am. As he sat up more he noticed a tray at his bedside table. On the tray was a plate of pancakes with way too much syrup, fruits, and a cup of coffee.
