Chapter Text
Introduction: The Beginning of It All.
Lando remembered exactly the day he met Oscar. Not that first brief encounter, with a formal handshake and polite smiles in the paddock, but the day they actually became part of the same team.
When Oscar joined McLaren, replacing Daniel, something inside Lando shifted. He couldn’t explain what it was – maybe a pang of uncertainty, the uncomfortable feeling of seeing a new teammate take that place next to him. But over time, the uncertainty gave way to something deeper.
Oscar was different. Reserved, but sharp with the right words. He had a calmness that contrasted with Lando’s more outgoing nature, and somehow, the two of them fit together.
The friendship grew in the small details: the exhausting practice sessions, the shared glances before the race, the jokes in the motorhome, and even the moments of frustration after a difficult race.
But, along with the friendship, something else started to emerge. Something Lando tried to ignore. He noticed in the casual touches that lasted a little longer than usual, in the text messages that stretched late into the night, in the times he caught Oscar staring at him when he thought no one was watching.
And the worst part? He looked back.
But neither of them said anything. They couldn’t. Lando knew what it was like to get involved and lose someone, he knew what it was like to have a relationship in the paddock and watch it crumble.
Oscar, for his part, carried his own scars. So, they hid behind the friendship, behind professionalism, behind the excuse that it was all just part of the dynamic between teammates.
Until that race came. That crash. That split second that made Lando’s world stop.
