Rich Girl

Summary:

It was an ordinary day. Everyone was going around doing their jobs.

So what could go wrong?

Written for Dnrarepairweek 2025.

Notes:

Belated one-shot submission for @dnrarepairweek day 02: Fluff, featuring L and Misa aka Lawmane

This one-shot was lying in wips for quite sometime. It was going to be part of something big (which I give up on a long time ago). So when I saw rarepair week being celebrated and this prompt, I thought to myself that I could always post my silly chapter because I worked hard on it at that time 🥹

Here's to hoping you like it ❤️

P.S. I absolutely don't own Rich Girl song by Gwen Stefani which is included in this. Which btw you should listen to because it's such a fun song!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Rich girl

L prided over this fact that his concentration was outstanding. It was after all one of the traits that made him the Justice today.

He never once gave it a thought that this trait might have the probability of crumbling down as well. It didn’t happen before, so why would it now?

It didn’t happen until she came along.

When L met Misa for the first time, he thought of her as a beautiful woman who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

As time passed, more adjectives were added to the impression. Misa now to him was evil (because she was once a second Kira and still a suspect), annoying and still a beautiful woman that had way too much energy for her own good.

He realized that he forgot one word to tag as he watched the model prance around in her room, arms laden with a dozens of clothes from the screens.

Misa Amane was incredibly distracting as well.

Every once a month, Misa Amane would sort her wardrobe by getting rid of clothes she wouldn’t need anymore and making space for the new ones.

While doing this chore, she would listen to the music from her mp3 player via earphones which was pocketed in her armband. Once the play button was pressed, she would waltz to the tune of song that was playing, pressing the dresses to her torso and checking them from every angle in the mirror before tossing them in designated piles.

Even though the music wasn’t on speaker, her movements were enticing enough.

It diverted his attention. It made him conjure far-fetched fantasies in his mind. It made him lag behind in his work severely.

And L certainly can’t afford doing that. Not when they have an important case to solve.

So the screens showing Misa’s room went black. L cited the reason of an occupant being distractive while fiddling with the system, except this time he took the entire taskforce with him. No way in hell was he going to admit it and take the blame on himself solely.

In a meantime, Watari was assigned to watch over her, so that the protocol was being observed.

It worked fine for a time being until one day, the music wasn’t on ear buds. It literally blared from everywhere, making the glass tremble in their frames and vibrating the desks and the chairs in which they sat upon.

“Light kun, could you please ask your girlfriend to lower the volume of the music? It’s disturbing the atmosphere” L requested, shifting the plate of Éclairs to the safe side before they fall down from the edge of the table.

“Ryuzaki you and I both know what will be the answer” Light responded, scrolling the contents of his computer with a mouse “So why bother with it?”

“You don’t have any say in this?”

“No, not really no”

“How can you work in this racket then Light kun?” the detective asked curiously.

At this, the young man rotated his chair so now he was facing L.

“Simple! Improvise!” And with that he procured a cotton wool ball “Stuff them in your ears and they will block out any noise. Very effective they were when my little sister had sleepovers at our house”

“I don’t like to stuff my ears, Light kun” The detective deadpanned.

“Well I tried to help you buddy” Yagami shrugged, stuffing cotton buds in his ears and going back to work.

Did he really? L thought as he watched Light with narrowed eyes.

L wasn’t used to being dismissed like that. He vaguely wondered that whether Light was deliberately making fun of his current misery.

‘He’s not that petty though…’He trailed off ‘But then again…’

Suddenly a chord was struck by an electric guitar, breaking his train of thoughts.

‘Something needs to be done about this!” L frowned, gazing at the ceiling. He looked around the room and found Matsuda occupied in sorting out the files. Judging by the tapping of his foot in accordance to the beat, Matsuda like Light didn’t have any problem with music. If anything, he was enjoying it.

“Matsuda!”

“Yes Ryuzaki?” The young officer paused.

“Go upstairs and shut down the music!”

“Wait what?!” Matsuda sputtered nervously.

“You heard me” L swiveled his chair around to face the computers again.

Matsuda gulped before climbing the stairs. Why was he always assigned to do the dirty jobs?

Any minute now, the music would be shut down and there would be peace.

It never came. L was now considering Light’s suggestion as he held the spared cotton buds between his gangly fingers. He was hesitant though. Cotton in his ears made him feel as though something was shutting down. Obviously that was its purpose; to block out the sounds. But to him it felt like it was shutting air too. It made him claustrophobic.

“Ryuzaki?”

L titled his head slightly to let know he was listening.

“Misa Misa refuses to shut down the music because her earphones have gone malfunctioned. So unless we bring her the new ones, we have to do ado with speakers” Matsuda explained.

L sighed. Pulling the drawer of the desk, he grabbed the credit card and threw it behind his back without glancing. Matsuda caught it, stunned.

“Go buy one then” Then he added as an afterthought “No make it a bunch just for a backup”

“Right now?”

“Obviously!” L replied testily, rolling his eyes. Why was Matsuda so slow?!

“On it!”

L got up. Since Matsuda failed abysmally (as expected from him), it was now up to him to stop this funky pandemonium.

Light watched him go and raised his eyebrow. L answered him by making a series of hand signs, pointing his finger upward and then closing his fingers together.

Light restrained himself from grinning at him and mouthed good luck. This will be interesting.

The music was getting louder as L got closer to his destination. It was a miracle that the walls didn’t crack down as of yet.

Bracing himself, L threw open the door and froze, the words dying in his throat.

Ex Second Kira was dancing. That was expected. Her choice of attire however was not though.

Misa was wearing a black tank top and a pair of hello kitty pink shorts. Her hair weren’t in usual twin pigtails either but rather held together in a messy half bun.

Now L knows why Matsuda failed as he watched the model twirl in a slow circle, arms raised upward, eyes closed and lip-syncing the song. Misa Amane was in a trance. And it’s difficult to reason with a person who’s in their zone.

L decided then and there that the best course of the action was to simply leave the room and wait for Matsuda’s return.

Quietly, he stepped back but mistakenly hit his elbow against the door knob.

Wincing with pain, L looked up and saw Misa Amane gazing at him, eyes twinkling, an impish smile playing on her lips.

Oh no, he had walked right into a trap.

“Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na”

Like a panther stalking its prey, Misa strutted towards him, matching her steps to the rhythm before stopping in front of him, pulling him inside and shutting the door.

L went numb as the girl steered him towards the sofa, pushing him on it so he can be seated. Eyes widened, the detective watched the model pick up two dresses encased in hangers. Still shimmying, she held one dress in front of her and gazed at him expectantly. It took him some seconds to realize that she was asking for his opinion.

And just like that, he forgot what he came here for as he decided which dress ought to be cast aside. One was a strapless black dress while the other one had a halter neckline. It was a difficult feat; Both were such beautiful dresses!

L racked his brains before shaking his head. It seemed Misa agreed with him for the dresses joined the pile which shall stay for another interim.

The affair continued for several moments until L remembered what he came here for! Grimacing he got up and made his way towards the stereo.

“If I was rich girl (na, na)
See, I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl”

“I disagree with these lyrics Miss Amane” L spoke loudly as he searched for the off button “You are already a rich girl so you wishing for it contradict your current status”

He finally found the button but before he could press it, he was roughly pulled away from it. The air out of L was knocked out as he was swerved around and came face to face with Misa.

Misa formed the words with her lips “Dance with me….” And with that she started swaying, making him move as well.

L assessed the situation. As it turns out, she had him trapped by wrapping the feather boa around his waist, the ends of it in her grasp. There was no way out.

She was now grinding against him. The detective could feel all of her curves now. Oh no, oh no, oh no…..

He has to abort like RIGHT NOW!

Avoiding her gaze, L asserted “Miss Amane, please let me go right now as there’s lot to be done…”

“Not until you dance with me” She purred.

She was teasing him. He felt the nape of his neck getting warmer.

“Miss Amane please!” The detective begged, trying to wriggle his way out from the scarf.

'Oh well, I tried’ the model told herself before stepping on his foot. L gasped. It didn’t hurt but the feeling wasn’t pleasant either.

Looking up he saw Misa grinning wickedly.

“An eye for eye then Miss Amane” L said, before stepping forward but missed. He tried again but Misa was too quick.

Just like that, the dance began. L didn’t realize it. He was too focused on getting back on the girl. She must pay.

Misa meanwhile was having the time of her life.

Matsuda finally came back. At the same time, the rest of the taskforce came too, along with Wedy and Aiber.

Light paused his work at seeing his father. Soichiro winced at the music drumming from above.

“What’s going on Light?!”

“I brought the earphones” Matsuda spoke at the same time, holding up the shopper.

“Misa is cleaning her wardrobe hence the music and Ryuzaki went to stop her” Light said, answering both questions.

STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!

Immediately everyone looked up, puzzled.

“The hell is going on?!” Aizawa asked.

“One way to find it out” Wedy said.

The thief went to the computers, pressing on buttons until the black screen from Misa’s room vanished.

The taskforce gasped and Aiber let out a whistle “Oh my!”

The screen revealed an unlikely duo dancing; Misa leading it whilst L following her steps. It was difficult to peg what dance they were aiming for. Either way, the pair looked oddly graceful performing it.

“This will be rather useful….” Wedy muttered pressing the recording option while Aiber silently laughed in the background.

L was sweating. To think capoeira would speed his reflexes, the opposite of that was happening, as he stomped on the spot where a minute ago, a dainty foot was resting. He never pegged Misa to have such speed, but then again she was so small!

“What’s the matter Ryuzaki? Are we getting tired?” Misa cooed.

“Hardly!”

L then made the mistake of looking at her. The matted fringes, the flushed cheeks and the eyes…her beautiful chocolate brown eyes hooked him. For a moment, he forgot everything. Time, place didn’t matter.

Only she did.

Misa took advantage of his daze by stepping on his foot again, putting her entire weight on them. L let out a strangled yelp, losing his balance and toppling backwards, taking the girl down with him as well. He landed flat on his back, all tangled up with the model.

Misa knew that she had crossed the line. Instantly she stood up and scrambled away from the sight, locking herself in the dressing room.

L laid there, breathing fast. The sound in the room was nothing compared to what was happening to his heart. It was beating so loud.

L closed his eyes, trying to ease his breathing by inhaling and exhaling slowly. He then flexed his feet, curling and uncurling his toes. Despite the sudden force and agony that followed, her feet felt nice on his. Warm and so soft. It made him curious what lotion she uses. Or the perfume that was wafting from the shawl.

As much he wanted to lie there and to revel in the sensations that were quickly slipping away from him, he can’t because of priorities. And with that thought L propped himself, unraveling the gauzy piece of article from his arms and dropping it on nearby sofa. He then shut down the music and stood next to the stereo for a while, contemplating.

L has never for once allowed anyone to touch him except for Watari and that too for grooming purposes only like cutting his hair or clipping his fingernails. He couldn’t recall a moment when someone held his hand or patted his back good-naturedly. He hadn’t thought much about it. Neither there wasn’t any need.

Until she hugged him. Kissed him on his cheek. And now this.

The detective shook his head and slouched his way towards the door, mind still very much unsettled with all the wild thoughts chasing him.

When the door was shut, did Misa came out. After making sure that it was only her, she let out a sigh of relief.

The hell was she thinking?! Making Ryuzaki dance and then making him fall? The model inwardly admonished herself.

But it was so fun. Plus the expression of Ryuzaki being flustered tempted her to provoke him more. For a person who hardly expressed and harbored an impassive expression constantly, it was indeed amusing to see him in that state.

Misa laughed to herself, very much aware that she’s being watched right now and probably cursed upon.

She knew that she had to pay. Oh well, might as well do it.

L was reading the report while Watari prepared his midnight coffee. Everyone had gone to bed for the much needed sleep.

“Here you go Ryuzaki” the old butler said, keeping the cherry patterned cup atop on matching saucer on a table.

“Thank you Watari”

“And this is for you” Watari then kept a medium sized white box next to the tea cup.

“What’s this?” L asked, looking at the box.

“It’s a gift from Miss Amane. And yes, I checked it thoroughly” Watari said quickly when the detective blanched visibly.

“As a matter of fact, she made me place an order, seeing that you don’t trust her” the butler added.

L didn’t reach out immediately to open the box but continued to poke at its sides.

“What is it?” he asked again.

“It’s a dessert” Watari said promptly.

The detective wasted no time in opening the box. It turned out to be an Easter bunny chocolate that was resting on a top of disc size dark chocolate biscuit and the biscuit edges decorated with cherry and vanilla frosting. It looked gorgeous and so delectable.

So Miss Amane’s idea of apology was gifting him an Easter bunny chocolate with a gigantic biscuit. It didn’t seem fair considering the hell she put him through this afternoon and the humiliation he faced afterwards.

“I must go now. Good night”

The butler left, pushing the trolley away, the wheels of it squeaking ominously. L continued to scrutinize the chocolate until he saw a piece of a paper lying on the floor.

Thinking nothing of it, he grabbed it and flipped it upward.

A word ‘Sorry’ was written in a joint handwriting, followed by a shaded heart. Misa’s handwriting. The note was in the box and must have slipped when he tossed it aside.

L didn’t know what to feel about it. He still wasn’t sure that whether a mere chocolate bunny would compensate the trouble he went through.

L’s gaze then zeroed on the doodled heart. It was tiny and there was nothing extraordinary about it, yet it gave him jitters.

After a minute or two, the raccoon eyed man pocketed it, stashing it in the front pocket of his jeans and finally reached for a piece of a chocolate.

He finished the whole thing then and there.

The end
