In Your Shadows

Summary:

Being broke, bored and just... you in general was terrible. Life could not be going worse. School was coming to a close as your days at University slowly creeped closer and closer to the deadline. The only thing that helped you pass the time was playing a little game you found on the app store - "Cookie Run Kingdom."

As you continued to play - building up your kingdom, you fell in love with 2 specific characters. Shadow Milk Cookie and Pure Vanilla Cookie. It was ironic in a way, liking the 2 characters that hated each other the most, yet here you were. Life didn't come easy, nor shall it get any easier as your time slowly dwindled to an end. Luckily for you, a certain someone(s) started to question their existence.

Notes:

Hello! This is my first work - ever. I don't have much to say except for the fact that my grammar may be a bit.. meh. Also the occasional spelling mistake here and there! I don't know how much I'll update but not very often (I doubt my motivation at the current moment shall persist)

Another thing - I'm currently playing through CRK (started like a week ago) and have been loving it. I know almost nothing about the story except the beast cookies, Soul-Jams, tower of knowledge stuff and SMC powers. Please correct me if I get anything wrong~! Once again, thank you for even clicking on this fic and happy reading :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Despair with a hint of sugar

Chapter Text

Tik.

Pencils and Pens scribbled across the surface of the test paper - the occasional grinding of a rubber audible from across the room.

Tok.

The clock swung its arms around to its upper most point, flailing like a squirming cat as an audio of a bell screamed out from the speakers - mimicking a real bell. "Finally!" You thought, slamming the test paper closed as you looked around the room, noticing other students doing the same while others simply swung the door open. The dreaded English test was finally done - you spent weeks upon weeks revising some stupid play - Blood Brothers. Grabbing your pencil case, you zipped it up and stuffed it within your backpack, slinging it over your shoulder as you stood up and immediately speed-walked to the door.

You weren't exactly the most... popular student here - far, FAR from it in fact. If this were a food chain, you'd be tinkering on the very bottom. Around you were countless of students, squirming and pushing their way through anything they could muster to reach the lunch line first. It was stupid, watching your pupil's distillate away from you for food. Sure - the food here was... limited but seeing them run still brought an amused smile to your face. Taking a step forwards, you began to walk aimlessly around, briefly eavesdropping on conversations as you walked past them.

What should you do?

You looked around the hallway you idly walked through. If you had friends, you'd be talking to them - but of course as the victim of almost everything, who on earth would want to be friends with a pathetic excuse of a human like YOU? A meek, shy kitten that were afraid of anything that even gave of the slightest hint of danger. Looking around, you noticed the teachers, or lack of, around you. Almost none. You hated this school with every single fibre of your being - what type of school didn't allow phones at school?! Let alone at break or lunch. Fuck it, you turned around, jogging as you turned a corner, the female bathrooms in sight. Guess you were going to do the usual, play.

Walking into the bathroom, you swung open a stall and walked in before closing and triple checking that you locked the door behind you. Silence. You found it difficult to understand why people couldn't shut up, silence was so.. relaxing - you could probably sleep in it if you tried hard enough. Oh right - the games. Snapping out of your small daydream, you fell back onto the toilet seat whilst you pulled out your phone and inputted the pin for it. What to play...

Block Blast? Too boring

Minesweeper? Too easy

Roblox? Didn't feel like it

Your mind idly drifted, thinking of something - anything, to play to pass time time. Thinking back to when you were idly scrolling on TikTok, you saw an ad for a game featuring... cookies? What was it called... "Run... Food.. palace?" No, of course not! "Cookie.. Cookie.. Run.. Kingdom..?" You mumbled to yourself out loud in a unsure tone. Yes, cookie run kingdom. It seemed to be a rather well made game, the character design and voice acting for a blue-black cookie you couldn't remember the name of especially drawing you in.

Eh, what's the worst that could happen? A character coming to its senses and realizing that it were simply in a game and escaping it's plane into your own? Never. Opening the app store, you turned on your mobile data as you searched up the game. Oddly enough, it appeared second down the list, the top result seemingly to be a crappy mobile game or a rip-off. Oh well. Clicking on the game, you clicked the green button that signified the download had begun as you idly scrolled across the page, reading the description and such.

Ping

A notification appeared on your device, signalling the game had been installed. Well, time to play!

BANG BANG BANG

Loud thuds interrupted your small gaming session. This game was awesome. You were so immersed that you lacked the ability to notice that you had locked yourself in the stall for an hour now. The voice acting especially! It was so goo-

"Hello?!" An all-too familiar voice called out from behind the door, once again startling you out of your daydream as the voice you recognized as Mr Bartlem spoke up once more. "Who's in there?" He asked, the booming tone demanding as you sheepishly responded, silently cursing yourself for even getting into this situation in the first place. "I-It's Reader, S-sir." Your much quieter voice responded, subconsciously pressing your fingers together like a shy school girl... Oh wait a second-

"You've been in there for a while, are you okay?" Mr Bartlem asked, his tone a little lower yet still having that bite within it. Sighing out in defeat, you stuff the phone into your blazer as you undid the latch, slowly opening the door to be met with a bald head staring directly at you. "Y-Yes sir.. Just.. puberty stuff is all!" That was one advantage of being a female - your lies being more believable due to your.. bodily ways. "...Hmph.." The teacher grunted out in frustration; his brows eyes locked onto your own, blue eyes - searching for any signs of lies before sighing. "Fine." Mr Bartlem replied with a deadpan tone, turning around and walking out of the bathroom out of sight. Wait.. was he in the girls bathroom-? Brushing aside the thought, you stepped out of the bathroom, your shoulders falling as you gently sighed. Guess you should go home, shouldn't you? You had been so engrossed in your game that you didn't even realize the artificial bell had rung, signalling your departure.

Walking out of the bathroom, you noticed the lack of students around the school. Guess most of them rushed out of the school as soon as the bell rang out. Biting your lip, you began to walk towards the exit of the building, occasionally reading a board or two as you walked. It had been an oddly long day; finding your potentially new favourite game, having a close encounter with a teacher and an English test all in the span of 2 - 3 hours. One thing you hated especially is that you biked to school - no matter if it were raining, hailing or even thundering. You lacked a car and lived way too far away to walk to school.

Pushing the double doors open for the exit, you walked over to your bike, sliding the numbers so they slotted into 198387, your code. Breathing out yet another disgruntled sigh, you picked up the unlocked bike lock and stuffed it into your pocked. Even though you lived quite the distance away, it took you around 25~ish minutes to bike to school and another 25 back, earning you a total of 50 minutes of cycling per day because you lacked a car. At least it were some sort of exercise.. Right?

Whatever, it was better if you just got the bike ride over with. Swinging your leg over the bike you started to pedal, not bothering to put a helmet upon your head. Another thing you hated about biking is the students. A bell screaming to them to move? They stand still as a rock. At this point, you don't even ring the bell anymore - you just dodge and weave. Following the all too familiar route - following the blue flowers across the street until you reached the turn with a large boulder that casted a shadow over everything, the distinct smell of the ice cream shop and the sweet taste of Vanilla in the air.. It still took too long as you allowed your bike to use the remaining momentum to stop itself right in front of your small house. Oddly enough - you had managed to save just enough money to buy a small house, fitted with a garage. Speaking of which, you inserted the key into the keyhole of the garage and turned. Fuck - it was jammed. Groaning to yourself, you turned the key harder, causing the garage door to snap open a bit more aggressive than you'd hoped. Never mind, it wasn't jammed, just a bit.. stiff.

Pulling away, you grabbed your bike and shoved it into the small area of the garage, making sure that the back tire didn't go beyond the caution tape line on the ground. Pulling back, you grabbed the garage and shut it, locking it with the same key as you once again let out another groan. Every day felt so God damn repetitive. Go to school, learn, get homework, revise for the homework, test, bike back, repeat. You hated it, you wished for something to change - anything to make your life just a little more interesting than the dull, boring life you were used to. Grabbing the front door, you slammed it open and walked inside, dumping all your belongings onto the floor (which you regretted immediately after). Not bothering to deal with it now, you simply rolled your eyes, kicking the pile that resided on the ground as you turned to the left, walking to then up the stairs. When could your life get more interesting? Your bedroom door rattled as you opened it, noting the rusty and practically destroyed hinges. Whatever. All you wanted to do right now was lay down on your bed and sleep - which is exactly what you did.
